That was awesome. I am so fascinated by quantum mechanics. I could spend countless hours reading that kind of stuff. If I ever make it back to school, I would love to spend some time studying stuff like that, maybe even a physics degree.

Does that mean my explanation made sense? woohoo

I know I think the idea is simple, but that doesn't mean I can always explain it in a simple fashion. Sometimes I can't see the forest from the trees and I forget that things that seem obvious to me, are not obvious to others.

I know that Miss Cat, Dave45 and I exist in real life, cos I have met all of them. The rest of you, I'm not so sure about. I mean, everyone tells me that there are real people behind these IDs and they mainly live in "New England". However, I looked across the Atlantic and all I could see was more sea. So, I'm wondering...

Do you REALLY exist? Poll to be erected and hopefully stay upright for more than 30 seconds... wuv

Well, that's all fine and good, but how do you know you really exist? You could simply be part of someone else's dream. You may think you exist, but you may just be a figment of someone or something's imagination.

Therefore, if you can't even prove that you exist (which of course would bring doubt to the true existence of Mrs. Cat and Dave45) then it would be impossible to prove that any of us exist. I mean, I can say I exist, show you pictures of my existence, but it could just be some being dreaming/imagining me showing you.

So, basically, it is impossible to prove that I, anyone on this board, or you actually exist.

That last part is false. Even if he is being decieved about the existance of the rest of us, the fact that he is being decieved is proof of his own existance. Logically, if he did not exist, there would be no need to decieve him. In fact, if he didn't exist, he wouldn't even be able tobe decieved.

or he could be one of Cybils multiple personalities therefore not existing but a just thought in the deepest, darkest part of ones mind

It is not false at all. The fact that he is being deceived does not prove his existence.

As I mentioned... He could simply be a player in someone or something's dream. Therefore, while "he's" being deceived and "he's" thinking he exists, it is not "him" at all, but merely whatever being created "him" in his mind is dreaming, imagining, or thinking.

Or this.

I mean, look at "Identity", with John Cusack. They all thought they existed. :Lecture:

So see, as I said....

The mere thought that you exist does not prove anything at all. :Lecture:

I have convinced myself that there is absolutely nothing in the world, no sky, no earth, no minds, no bodies. Does it now follow that I too do not exist? No: if I convinced myself of something then I certainly existed. But there is a deceiver of supreme power and cunning who is deliberately and constantly deceiving me. In that case I too undoubtedly exist, if he is deceiving me; and let him deceive me as much as he can, he will never bring it about that I am nothing so long as I think that I am something. So after considering everything very thoroughly, I must finally conclude that this proposition, I am, I exist, is necessarily true whenever it is put forward by me or conceived in my mind. (Med. 2, AT 7:25)

Yes actually it does. If he did not exist, he would be unable to be deceived. What form he is in, is ultimately irrelevant.

What form he is in is relevant.

If he is merely a character in something's dream, then in reality he does not exist. He is just a thought of something that does exist.

I mean, if just being a thought translates to existence then there would be no question that all of here on the board exist. Even if Cat is conversing with us in his mind, then that would mean we exist. So, by your definition then we do all exist.

But, I don't agree that simply because something is thought, it exists, then it is entirely possible that none of us exist outside of someone's mind.

Yeah, no... I'm not a fan of Descartes. I actually used my "thoughts of something else" to discredit Descartes' "I think therefore..." statement in one of my philosophy classes. My prof declared me the winner. :)

Have you never read the quotes in my sig????

Nietzsche, Kierkegaard... I side with the existentialists. ;)

Descartes' need to have something proved beyond a doubt before he accepted that it existed or as fact...

Nietzsche had a nice response to that... "The irrationality of a thing is no argument against its existence, rather a condition of it."

But it is the INDEPENDENT thought he shows by questioning his own existence that proves that he exists. If he is merely a figment of someone else's imagination, how could he think for himself?
