Looking at the Patriots - 2020

When he decided to stop leading the team out of the tunnel it said something important but nobody noticed. Brady knew that he didn't want to be that guy anymore and handed the torch to Julian -- his buddy who will never quit until they carry him off the field for the last time.

When did he stop leading them out of the tunnel? I usually didn't get to see who did because of watching on a stream.

Yeah I didnt get that one either, he always lead them out, even in the last game he ever played here.

Is it possible that Brady's lack of trust stifled guys like Tony Simmons, Brian Tyms, Aaron Dobson and others?

If you think about it - in 19 years Brady only passed to Troy Brown, Deion Branch, Wes Welker, Randy Moss and Jules from the WR spot (I'm sure I'm missing someone.)

Sure there was the occasional year from Patten, Givens, Amendola and Hogan but maybe Harry and others will flourish under Cam.

No. Brady has more td's to different players than any QB in NFL history. Believe it or not, sometimes the pats can draft a player who is not good, especially at receiver. He was a great QB here, he did what was best for the team and that is why he was kept for so long. Longer than any player ever under belichick. There was a reason for that. Harry was here 8 games last year and a rookie, anything he does in the future is up to him.

I don't know who wrote this piece, but, it captured at least some of the reasons why I started souring on Brady over the last few seasons.

I would have added the numerous examples of Brady quitting on plays early.....TOO early......and heaving the ball in the stands rather than trying to find somebody and take a chance of getting hit.

I can't quantify that opinion in any way that I could cite, but I feel certain that it: A. Happened and B. Resulted from Brady deciding in advance that it was more important that he save himself than his team. That attitude stood in clear contrast to the way he played when he was the leader of this team in actual fact and deed rather than through reputation and force of habit. I believe his teammates understood that the Emperor Had No Clothes even if they had never read that particular story as a kid. And we're only now stating to hear the extent of it.

When he decided to stop leading the team out of the tunnel it said something important but nobody noticed. Brady knew that he didn't want to be that guy anymore and handed the torch to Julian -- his buddy who will never quit until they carry him off the field for the last time.

I will eventually learn to get over it and remember the Brady that used to be, but for now I'm glad we have Cam Newton, who is absolutely doing everything right.

It was Ken Laird the former steelers writer, and its a lie. Brady didnt say that about our receivers last year, and you of all people should have checked on it. Here was the quote Brady gave. Cam has been here two games. He is fine, but as far as saying the right things, he is trying to keep a job and get rid of a past. I would not expect him to be acting up this fast or if he is smart, at all. As far as Brady protecting himself, he never jumped away from a fumble in a superbowl. Older players have to self preserve, but he took enough hits over the years and played injured enough here that I can forgive him for a few quick throws he had to get off. Hell he was injured last year and still played. A quitter would not have.

"I would say (to Belichick) I don't have any trust that this guy can help us win the game," Brady said. "I definitely expressed my opinion to say 'If you put him out there, I'm not going to throw him the ball.' The whole team is trusting me to do what's right by the team, so you can't put someone out there that I don't believe in. Because if I don't believe in him, it's worthless for the team.

"I think fortunately for me, Coach Belichick always saw it the same way as me, which is why I think we had such a great connection. He saw football very much the same way that I saw it. All the coaches that I worked with on a daily basis, they want the same thing."

Translated-
'I would say to Bill Belichick, I know better than you, and won't throw to some players that you have deemed worthy to be on the team. Players you have obtained, coached, and put on the field are worthless in my estimation'.

Bill Belichick lost his mother last week. I'm sure he has deeper concerns than the outfit he picks out on a zoom call with reporters. Shameless what the talking heads are discussing today.

That looks like a cast on David Andrews right hand (no.60). Mike Reiss says its from his thumb to wrist.

But he's taking part in some drills so can't be bad.

Our own Kam Chancelor maybe.

if he can cover as well as he can bull rush/tackle he will be an outright stud.

its clear how crazy physical he is and that he has a nose for the ball, only thing left is can he cover rb and te when called upon. If so Chung may never see another game for the Pats and that is saying something - i am a huge huge huge chung 2.0 fan.

edit: guess i am not the only one:

He most certainly did. The whole interview is up on web.

2) A popup will appear, click "Start Free Preview"

3) Click on the listing titled "Howard Stern Interviews: Tom Brady"

To save you time, he is what Brady said:

"I don't have any trust that this guy can help us win the game. If you put him out there, I'm not going to throw him the ball."

[Later added when talking about Belichick], "He saw football in the same way I did. We saw the process of winning the same way." Evidently not, as Belichick put on the field the players he as HC/GM thought gave the Pats the best chance to win. Brady disagreed and in fact did refuse to throw to rookie receivers except in the Dallas game when all he had were rookie receivers.

You called Newton a selfish me-first player, yet here's what Cam said about the same receivers that Tom refused to throw to. Cam was asked if he thought the Pats should go after another WR, and he said:

“Man, I’ll say this, the answers are in that locker room. Simple and plain. We got Little Bud, Doughboy, Highway 11, and MyGerms. We good to go. Let me rewind that. We have Damiere Byrd, N’Keal Harry, Julian Edelman and Jakobi Meyers.”

Now you tell me which guy is a team player. Brady wanted to have a say in personnel and plays, and he wasn't getting it in 2018/19. That was more important than winning evidently.

Brady was the best for a long time, but not recently. Also in the Stern interview, Brady said he knew before the 2019 season began that it would be his last year, and it showed. He was in a pissy mood all year. The team was 8-0 and he bitched his way through the post-game presser. He screamed at his rookie WRs who were trying their best with a QB who wouldn't help them along.

Brady is still trying to be a coach, ragging on Ron Jones last game because he fumbled. Wouldn't that be the coaches job? Brady's job as a player is to say, "Don't worry, bud, we got this."

That's what Brady used to do, most famously with Corey Dillon. That was when he was TFB.

Youi've spent the last two months pissing and moaning about how bad Cam is as a player and a person. Time to give it up.

Jules is awesome, you can see how he is such an important mentor for these guys. He was discussing N'Keal.

JE11's knee is getting worse.

He'll push through it because Edelman. I'm thinking BB needs to make certain he has a replacement since this could be Edelman's last year. Maybe Gunner but we need to see it on the field.

I still think we need a big target for Cam. Nink thinks they should trade for Browns Laundry. Get the TE's more involved in offense. They were Cam's favorite targets in carolina.

There was some debate about who would do better, Tom Brady or Cam Newton, but who woulda thunk Ryan Izzo would be far out-performing Rob Gronkowski?????

From Florio:

Gronkowski’s problem is obvious: He can’t move like he used to

“I came here to block, baby” could make it onto a T-shirt, but that’s hardly an accurate representation of why the Buccaneers traded for the privilege of paying Rob Gronkowski $9 million this year.

Gronk, in true Gronk fashion, laughed off his lack of involvement in the Tampa Bay offense through two games, saying “[f]our targets is four more than I thought I was going to get.”

Baloney. Gronk didn’t press pause on a no-pain-plenty-of-gain media career to hitch his wagon to the left or right tackle and take on pass rushers. Gronk came back to do Gronk things. While he always has been respected as a blocker, he’s a future Hall of Famer because of Gronkspikes, not pancakes.

Watching the first two games of the season, the problem is obvious: He can’t move like he previously did. Against the Saints in Week One, after he made his first catch as a Buc, Gronk ran as if his feet were stuck in Mississippi mud.

Although he had no catches in Week Two, two passes were thrown his way. For the first, he made an un-Gronk-like flailing motion for the ball as it sailed over his head. For the second (wiped out by an interference foul on the defense), Gronk had the ball in his hands but hot potatoed it in a way that the Gronk of old never did.

Maybe it will eventually come back. Maybe it won’t. For now, though, the Gronk of Old has been replaced by a Gronk who looks old, and who may be in the process of realizing after a year off that everyone seems a lot faster than they used to be. Primarily because for now he is noticeably slower than he used to be.
