Week 6, Broncos @ Patriots

Meant to post this earlier
If the Pats don't figure out how to handle defenses that pack the LOS as Denver did, we're in for a long hard season.

Or getting totally hosed by the refs too. Very unlike Bill. It is always on to the next game.
refs have been awful this year. I know we notice it more, but yesterday was again just bad. BB having to freaking throw a red flag on that td when Cam is laying halfway in the endzone. Just bad stuff.

Was a little surprised by that too. I have seen half the team down with injuries before and Bill would not make an excuse for it in the past. Yeah I mean teams practice because it means something, but that egg they layed to one of the bottom 5 teams in the league at home no less was not just all about practice.
You're right that practice means something, especially for timing and rhythm. Missing 3/5 of the OL and 2 starters on the DL also means something. It figured to be a tough game. Btw, the Broncos are not a bottom 5 team; I'll go bottom 10 though.

Bronco's are not good, I see maybe 4 wins this year if they are lucky and they were without basically their only weapon on offense and Lock had not played in like 4 weeks. Not a game the pats should have lost. Titans have had two 40 point games since they came off covid restrictions. They had 16 players test positive so its been not good there either. Good teams get through things. Had the pats won going away yesterday, the talk would have been, wowzer, they had barely any practice and look at them go.

The Broncos were ranked 24th last week. They're not good but they're not bad, esp with Lock back in the saddle after missing a couple of games.
Had he played the previous 2 games there's no doubt that 24th would've been 19-20th ranked.

I am not sure Lock being back was that great, he almost single handly won the pats the game. Maybe I think less of them than they are, but not a team the pats should lose to at home. I mean denver barely beat the Jets....

I agree. We are in real trouble here. We don't have the QB to cover anymore and it was not just Brady's on field play but his expectation of excellence. It was interesting to me that the media harped on him for yelling at his Oline during the Bears game when they had 4 penalties in a row on one drive and then this week they have zero penalties. He is relentless in his pursuit of winning and you can already see it permeating in Tampa.

Although I did chuckle to myself when Suh was jawing with Rodgers and getting in his head. I said to my kids, I am not sure even Brady can reel in Suh. Not sure Brady wants to either. LOL
You know, I was STUNNED but Randy Moss called him out about that on Sunday Countdown. And he's a huge TB fan. I would have expected it from Rodney who is zero % a homer. Randy said that doing it with a team not used to playing with you yet is not a good idea, if I remember right. I will look for video.

Cams got the worst skill position talent in the entire league around him.
He’s not been great, but I don’t think he’s the problem.

If playing out the string means 12-4 I will take that every year.
I would too... 12 will always be a competitor... brady at 50 will still be better than most of the qbs in the league because of that drive

He should still be here, and never worn another teams jersey.

but after the last contract, he was gone. all he had to do was complete the terms, and then opt out. playing out the string...

The Titian’s didn’t miss a beat with no practice time
With no "official" practice time.
Team dynamic hasn't changed much from last year.
Doesn't take a lot to hand it off to Derek Henry and watch him plow through people.

I thought it was a bit odd that Henry cooled off the way he did late last season, because he is unstoppable when he is fresh.

Vrabel is a smart dude and if the season continues I'd look for him to rest that beast a little.

You could see the Houston defenders just thinking "Oh, shit....here he comes again". You almost never see that in today's NFL, but guys are regularly getting hurt just trying to tackle him. I saw more than a few examples of guys flinching on contact or unwilling to commit.

There is still a place for a monster RB in today's game, especially as front 7's get smaller/quicker to deal with passing games.

Yeah there is, but they also have a QB playing well, I think that is still needed.

Yeah, Henry is just another kind of beast. Players are afraid of hitting him or being part of a highlight. He runs like a rhino.

I think it should involve the o-line blocking better, and WRs actually getting open before Cam is getting hit. It also wouldn't hurt if Cam could figure out to just throw the ball away, if nothing is there.

The OL was disaster No. 1. No doubt. Andrews is supposed to come back this week from IR, so that'll help.

One thing I have always noticed about Newton is that he will force a low% play instead of chucking it in the stands. To his credit, he has been playing more conservatively this season (to my eyes) but old habits are hard to break. I felt like you did about the WRs, but Evan Lazar said he thought guys were getting open and he'll break it down tomorrow.

One weird thing is that Devin Asiasi supposedly lit it up during "training camp" but hasn't had a single target yet. Izzo has caught a few, but nobody bothers to cover him. His fumble was painful, but the whole game was so it didn't stand out. Still, it's time to see what the rookies can do.

How much have the room TEs been on the field though. I mean I know what you do in practice means your reps, but just wondering how much time they are getting.

Quite a bit actually. Izzo was on the field for 35/55 snaps and Asiasi 24/55.

I think the player hurt most by the layoff was Cam Newton. It looked like his foot mechanics reverted but more than that, it seemed he didn't see the play developing
in front of him. He wasn't prepared to see the routes being run and the timing/rhythm for more completions. Cam needs practice to keep his passing skills sharp and to keep the plays fresh in his memory bank. Looking at the game again, I saw receivers (Jules and Bryd esp.) open a lot more than I expected. Can't wait for Lazar's article on it.

Patriots % of targets for the year thus far
WR 63%
RB 30%
TE 7% - Lowest in the league

15 teams are passing to the TE > 15% (only 2 < 10% (Pats and Carolina, neither have good TEs)
and 4 teams are targeting their TEs > 30% (LV, Tenn., Clev., Phil.)

The trading deadline is nearing. Pats have plenty of draft capital & current cap space.
Pats need a TE then a LB with cover skills & a WR. Pats should be buyers if they have high aspirations for this year.

Here's Lazar's article with plenty of video for support. The OL was a mess and it was worse than I thought.
Coaches have some coaching to do...
