Looking at the Patriots - 2020

These types of quotes makes me wonder if he truly lacks confidence. The guy has been so beat up both physically and mentally that he just seems like he has no belief.
I think it was clear just watching him during certain junctures that he was really struggling with the whole situation.

His words in that interview pretty much confirmed as much-- Cam didn't know the offense as well as he (and all of us) would've liked. After the first 4 games, he was 2-2 with a style-points loss to Seattle in the mix and he was probably thinking that he was going to have a hell of a year. A few weeks later he was on the Covid list and when he came back he was facing defenses that were now in mid-season form and he couldn't do the sight reads required by our offense. It had "started to rain" and we saw the true Cam.

He had tears after he fumbled in the first Buffalo game and during a presser where he almost lost it. Definitely some confidence issues.

I don't want to dump the guy because I like him a lot as a person, but---- how to you keep him on the field after that? It's gonna be interesting. Maybe he'd accept a backup/mentor role which I'd be fine with.

Yeah. It was very difficult to watch. I like him too personally. He just could not get it done on the field for a lot of reasons it seems. His health, the play book, no off-season. We are just used to Pats team responding so well to adversity but we just didn't have that at all this year. Covid really cratered our season. We just could never be consistent enough and much of that goes back to Cam. I doubt he is with us in any capacity next season.

I understand this and find myself in the unusual position of defending Cam. I have never really said much, mostly he doesn't fit this offense. The lisfranc would make it necessary to again find the mechanics to not throw the ball in the ground or airball it. I do not think he has regained the proper mechanics yet, if he ever had them. I have had the same complaints about TFB at times, where his mechanics have been off, you can see those in the game day threads from last year and I think even the year before. If the mechanics aren't right, the throw won't be either. Sort of like a painter, if the prep work is no good, the finish will not be good.

It could go either way, I think, but he'd have to really embrace the Patriot Way thing and be willing to take what he could get, both financially and in terms of viewing himself as a number one. And I don't think he'll have a lot of leverage with either after what the NFL saw in 2020.

I think he could be great in a rotation, because with a year to understand all the concepts and some time on the bench to keep his legs fresh and he could be more successful next season, but only as a counterpuncher/situational guy. He's still young for that, but he knows he's got a lot less tread left on his tires than the average former MVP his age.

I don't think anybody knows quite what they want to do about him yet.

He would be great in the Jacoby Brissett or Taysom Hill role. Just bring him in situationally especially in the red zone and let him do his thing. Inside the 10 or the 5, he was money on TD runs which is hugely valuable. I would be all for that. It is just a matter if Cam would accept that type of role but it would be perfect for him. Keeps him fresh like you said and also allows him to use his skills at the most opportune times while keeping the defense off-balance.

Yeah, if he was willing to adapt to a backup role and to be brought in on critical 3rd downs and short or possessions within 5 yards of the EZ, then he could be very useful. But at this stage, I'd rather we start next season with a young QB, whether that's a Trey Lance or whoever and build from that. I'm not overly keen on taking a Stafford or Ryan at this stage of their careers If we don't get adequate weapons they'll be useless. Cam was a no brainer at his low price tag and potential upside, but it didn't work out.

But this is not just about a QB. We are in desperate need of two NFL calibre TEs and a much better WR corp.

Stafford and Ryan would cost us draft capital which I don't want to give up either. We have too many holes to fill. Much rather go the draft route for QB and then fill in with a cheap FA.

Iow, you're willing to have 2 more years like this one?

Vet min...and only as a backup? I'd be OK with that. He is a good dew...that much is obvious.

The QB position is so tough to get right. Look at the Ravens, already Jackson seems to be regressing, not at the level he was last year as predicted by many and will be interesting to see if he fails to perform in the playoffs again.

We can go with a vet like Stafford or Ryan, will cost us and we still need serious improvements at WR and TE, we could get lucky and land Prescott or maybe JG or.....we go with the draft and build from there, maybe with a vet taking the reins to begin with, like Stafford or Ryan providing they come cheap. Who knows, maybe Ryan would like to come back to Boston?

Drafting a QB high will not fix the problem. Until they address Dumpster fire WR & TE depth. Myers & Bryd were only ok options.

Just keep in mind this: The Pats are favorites tomorrow, as they should be compared to the NYJetes. If they win, they'll finish 7-9 on the year. I know it hasn't looked good, there are glaring issues, this is not me dismissing the very real problems that exist with the Patriots roster. That being said:

The Saints went 7-9 in 2016. With Drew Brees starting every game.
The Packers went 6-9-1 in 2018. With Aaron Rodgers starting every game.

And these were years where there were offseasons, not in the middle of a global pandemic. Despite the pandemic, the loss of the GOAT, the opt-out of 9 starters, the new QB getting COVID, and so forth, the Pats have a chance to finish just 1 game under 500. A handful of plays go differently, and we'd be looking at wins instead of losses in the Seattle, Buffalo, and Houston games, and a team potentially finishing 10-6. That being considered, I don't think we're that far off from being competitive, no matter how much it may seem otherwise. 2 years with minimal improvements spent building towards the future, to get together a roster able to legitimately compete for Super Bowls again? It could be worse.
