Caserio Is Gone

Easterby had everything to do with this and not all Texans fans are happy with owner McNair, Easterby or the the Caserio hiring.
From my pov, I couldn't be happier. That sounds crazy I know but after the last 4 drafts I can't say Dave Zeigler won't do at least as good a job as Caserio. In fact, there are 10-15 people on this board who could pull off better drafts than Caserio. He may be missed for cap management but he won't be missed for his talent evaluation. That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

He drafted amazing WR's and TE's... :coffee:

While everybody is focused on the recent failings at the top of the draft, Caserio was the overall director of player personnel here since 2009 and we won three Super Bowls during his tenure. Nobody was better at bringing in undervalued veterans who flourished here and "his" ability (it was a lot of people, really) to find UDFA's was very successful and while you can critique the recent poor picks in the first few rounds, we have had a ton of success from later rounds, which along the other means of acquiring talent helped make us the greatest dynasty in the sport. He was part of that and many will tell you an important part.

I'm ready to move on and am not particularly upset that he wanted a fresh start, but it seems to me that people want a scapegoat. There have been stories floated that Caserio and Belichick sometimes clashed over draft picks with Bill retaining the final say, I believe the Jordan Richards selection was one of them, but Caserio was pretty much the ideal soldier here and you didn't hear that stuff coming from him.

Good luck Nick Caserio and best wishes.

You're right that FA signings have generally been very good and generally better than draftees. I don't credit Caserio for the FA signings however.

A little explanatory history that may be helpful for some.
There's a difference in Pro Personnel Director and Player Personnel Director. The director of pro personnel is responsible for evaluating players who no longer have college eligibility. He has 3-4 scouts who scout the NFL and finds players who are potential fits for his team in the future. The Pro Personnel director is also responsible for the weekly development of an ‘Advance Scouting Report’ with pertinent information regarding the upcoming opponent. Pro Personnel is also responsible for managing player workouts during the year. Caserio held that job for a very short time from 2004 - 2006 when he became director of player personnel. He left that & coached WRs in 2007 and in 2008 he was named the director of player personnel, a job he kept til yesterday. Caserio hasn't been in charge of Pro Personnel for 14 years.

Caserio has been the Pats Player Personnel Director for the last 12 years. His central job is evaluating college players and he must coordinate all the information on a player, including input from team scouts and coaches, recruiting services and other sources, to present to BB. He is also responsible for setting the draft board once players are identified. He's responsible for coordinating team travel, and player and team non-game public appearances, handling media coverage, as well as managing new player orientation.

Normally the GM handles contracts and cap strategy but for the Pats I think Caserio did the contracts and cap research. BB had final authority over draft picks while leaning on Caserio's reports & recommendations. BB is very hands on with regard to interviews.

Pro Personnel and Player Personnel Directors are normally equals within the executive staff hierarchy. Caserio's tenure gave him extra power and duties, no doubt.

Overpaying a GM is necessary when your team is in cap hell and has no 1st or 2nd rnd pick in the draft.
6 years of security is important for any GM under such circumstances. From Caserio's pov I understand this.
From a Texans' pov, hiring a 1st time GM at a HOF GM price is a huge gamble.

As much as their fans want to get away from Patriots South, Easterby and McNair are all in for some reason.
Is Josh McD next? I don't think so.
What kind of person would want that HC situation?
Answer: A desperate one.
Imagine how much money they'd have to pay Josh to take that job!

$6m/ is being reported.

Reading reports this morning that JMD is not on the radar for the Texans job.

He'd tell them no thanks if he were. Caserio probably already knows this.

I agree. He has become a bit of a "fall guy" for this current season and the drafting woes. He has done a terrific job overall.

His primary job as Player Personnel Director was the draft. Are you happy with the recent drafts?
BB knew this was likely. He could have given Caserio the title GM if he wanted to keep him but chose not to do that.

Eh. Bill makes the final call on the picks. I very much doubted that Caserio told him to trade back and take safeties. I do think it is time for a change and I do hope Bill brings someone in who is proven and gives them the GM title.

Think of it this way.

Caserio (and his scouts) comes up with most of the players on the list then BB makes his choice.

Sure. But it is not the simple. Where and who you draft are the critical components. Caserio also works on FA/UDFAs and trades too. I am not saying he has been great recently but I agree with Hawg, his overall resume was pretty solid. That being said, I do think it is a time for a change at the top and also the coaching positions too.
