The non-political Coronavirus thread

Received news that a co-worker of mine down in NC died Christmas Eve. He and I occupy the same position at our company and competed internally. He was a fiery and worthy competitor and we went back and forth many times all the while driving and teaching each other. I respected him.

We were life twins as we both moved away from the North East (me to MI and him to NC), stumbled into our wives and had three children and built our families. We are the same age and the significant events of our lives line up almost to the month. Married 25 years with 19, 20 and 21 year old kids in college. I respected him even more for his accomplishments leading his family.

Now he is gone. I will miss the competitor and friend, but my throat aches painfully for his family as I type this.

Cause of death was vasculitis which is so general to me I don't know what to make of it.

Too damn young. Not fair.
Sorry for your loss, friend.

My wife's Dad and Stepmom both came down with Covid on Sunday night. Her and my younger son had both been with him the Friday and Saturday before so we were keeping a close eye on the two of them and we started sleeping in separate rooms.

On Monday my boss had all of the employees go take one of the spit tests just for the hell of it. On my way home Monday night I started getting chills and felt really tired. I went out for a run to see if I could shake it. After I got home I felt like I probably had a fever. Temperature was pretty normal until right before bed then it went up to 100.3.

I went to bed and woke up Tuesday morning and felt perfectly fine. We decided that it would be best to go take a rapid test. Later that afternoon it came back positive. I felt great all day Wednesday.

Yesterday I still felt great but at some point I realized I had lost my sense of taste and smell. My original test also came back positive. My wife and son were both negative.

I woke up this morning and I still feel pretty good but my nose is really plugged up. I wear a Fitbit to bed. I know it's probably not that accurate but my oxygen levels have remained normal while I sleep.

The first couple days I was kind of playing things off since I felt so good but now I'm hoping that the hammer isn't about to drop. 🤞

Day five and not much has changed. No more fevers and a bit of congestion. For whatever reason it seems to get worse at night. Oxygen levels still all seem to be the same as before I got it. Friday is supposed to be my all clear day.

You have been running 5ks, right? I guarantee that has helped your V02 level. Hang in there, brother.

Thank you. Never would have guessed when I started running over a year ago that it would pay off on this way. Been switching between Letterkenny and playing video games online with my boys to keep my sanity.

My 52-year cousin, Christine in down in Maryland caught it and I guess she is pretty sick. My best guess though is she'll be OK. Not to be dismissive, cuz I'm not trying to be but It's amazing how few people I know who have been really sick or even caught it in my real world. Just me and her. I mean I had it and Jo took care of my sick ass and she didn't catch it neither did either of my roommates, thankfully. Weird.

Today was my first day of freedom but I feel a bit guilty. Last night our younger son complained about not feeling very good. He had a very minor fever so we decided to go get him tested this morning. The rapid test came back negative but we have to wait until the regular test comes back which will be Sunday or Monday. This means my wife still has to quarantine until the results come back. I'm in the clear since I just recovered from it. She had to hold it down on her own for 10 days while I was isolated and the end was in sight and then this happened. Fingers crossed that the other test comes back negative. He's been acting like his normal self today. My smell and taste seem to be returning. It's kind of off and on. I went out and got my first run in post-Covid. I was a little nervous but things went pretty well. I made it my usual three miles even if it took me a couple extra minutes to get it done.

Good for you, Alk. Glad you got over it so quickly.

I'm scheduled for the vax in mid February and I'm hoping the new AstraZeneca/Johnson & Johnson vaccine is out by then.
Only 1 injection, no liquid nitrogen storage, 100% effective & no allergic rxns during trials.

Wow, that's amazing. How long is that vaccine supposed to be good for?
