The 2021 Draft- We Need This One

That was a great presser. The transcript is great to read in its entirety, if only for the rating system (numbers, colors, letters) BB used for draft purposes.

He also refers to, as above, picking good players as opposed to picking lesser players at positions of need. He gave the example of James White and Damien Harris and being asked why he he drafted a guy and then kept him on the bench for a year. But then they became valuable contributors when needed. great stull because it shows a player who gets buried in the depth chart is not fallen out of favor or was a mistake, but also putting the lie to BB's never paying attention to the press. Years later, he still remembers Vereen, White, Harris, etc.

Where has this BB been for last couple of years. Aggressive & filling needs. Day 3 is when he can go back to value . I'm still hoping for a good #4 option at WR.

Caserio's influence has given way to Matt Patricia's eye for trench warfare. Back to the roots of football.

Pats were tight against the cap spending every cap penny available, and had been push $$$ into the future. Then last year they bit the bullet + had a lot of dead money. THIS year Pats had a HUGE amount of money, enough to fill must-have needs with free agents, allowing BB to grab any player he wanted.

But you are right in that he does seem to be headed for smash-mouth football and headed there aggressively, both with FAs and draft picks.

It's a good thing we cleared the dead money and stocked up because this is suddenly a very different decision. Jets gonna Jet, but the Bills and Dolphins are good teams who would have a shot at the division even if TFB were here. I think a Wildcard is possible this transition year.

Good work, BB & Co.!

Draft grades this soon don't mean much, we all know that.
Still it's comforting to know PFF gives the Patriots the league's best grade following the 2021 draft.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

R1 (15): QB Mac Jones, Alabama
R2 (38): DI Christian Barmore, Alabama
R3 (96): EDGE Ronnie Perkins, Oklahoma
R4 (120): RB Rhamondre Stevenson, Oklahoma
R5 (177): LB Cameron McGrone, Michigan
R6 (188): CB Joshuah Bledsoe, Missouri
R6 (197): OT William Sherman, Colorado
R7 (242): WR Tre Nixon, UCF

Day 1:
The narrative surrounding Mac Jones for the past few weeks was focused on whether he was worth not just the No. 3 overall pick, but the three first-round selections the 49ers invested in that draft slot. At No. 15 overall, it’s an entirely different conversation. Jones led the nation last season in overall PFF grade (95.8) and was the most accurate college quarterback in terms of adjusted completion rate (84.2%) PFF has seen. This is an outstanding pick.

Day 2: Christian Barmore is the best interior defender in this draft, and he should have been a first-round draft pick. He is the only consistently high-level pass rusher from the interior in this class, posting a 90.3 PFF pass-rushing grade against true passing sets last year. Barmore was the No. 12 overall player on the PFF Big Board.

Perkins burst onto the scene with a 90.5 PFF grade last season. The problem was that his stellar play came on only 262 snaps, and some of that was against the lowly Kansas Jayhawks. If that production is real, he is an excellent steal at this pick. He has all the physical traits that the NFL covets at the position, and the Patriots can work with him to find a role on their defense. He needs to work on his hand usage but has everything else one could ask for in an edge rusher.

Day 3: McGrone has legitimate sideline-to-sideline speed. His combination of range and reliable tackling makes him well-suited to shut down outside rushing attacks and screens. And at 20 years old, McGrone has room to grow and improve on some of the concerns surrounding his coverage ability.

Draft Grade: A+

All the more impressive after the way they trashed the Pats' free agency feeding frenzy.

What did you like about Mac Jones, I didn't watch him much, and have given up on trying to rank these guys on my own.
Seen Mills launch fly balls to centerfield for the safeties to settle under, the one image that won't go away.
Like St Brown,
Is Stevenson the second coming of Blount??

PS, For me, the selection of Harry has taken the luster off the promise of the new draftees.

The first time I ever noticed Jones he made a fake handoff, pumped to one direction and then threw a floater to the other side short that landed perfectly in the mitts of the back who snuck out on a wheel route. It was pretty advanced for a college kid and then I saw him make dozens of similar plays with great timing and execution. I saw him drop dimes into tight windows at all levels and never saw him look confused. Good footwork to move in the pocket, but the number of times I saw him lead a WR perfectly was unusual. Then, I learned about his high academic record and then saw him just destroy the 2nd best team in College with a perfect game. He does too many things that College QBs seldom do. I was sold on him. He is the closest thing to a Brady-type you will see and I don't believe the era of the pocket passer is over.

I can't wait to see what he can do, but will be patient and not expect instant anything.

I see Stevenson as a short-yardage sledge hammer and see him as a better blocker and all-around player than Jakob Johnson.

Yeah, 3 firsts and a 3rd to move up for Lance.
Did he really have to trade so high?
BB read the draft better than anyone and got his guy at great value.

Brutal trade. Stay at 12 and you get Mac Jones. If they had a play at Lawrence, I get this trade. But If nothing else, they still had Garoppolo and a chance to get healthy again on both sides of the ball. They were going to come into the season with a shot to be competitive, regardless.

If this season ends up half as bad on the field as 2020 did for SF, we could see a house cleaning at season's end.

Now that free agency and the draft is over, we can see that Belichick has completely rebuilt the team, and it's a classic example of BB roster construction.

To celebrate, I just had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. And not just your garden variety PBJ, but a much more special PBJ.

Yes, I made a BBPBJ.

41% of all players drafted this year played in the Senior Bowl. 106 players.
It's become can't miss football for the NFL.

I hope you put peanut butter on both pieces of bread to maintain contain of the jelly....
