Rd 6, Pick 22 (200) Sam Roberts, DL Northwest Missouri State

Small college defensive player of the year, small, but a knack for penetration and pass rush. A knack for blocking kicks, with 5.

Interesting.

So, Sam is a huge Pats fan? Excellent. That's a cool thing to know.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that he'll need to work on his technique, which appears very raw, in order to stick on the roster.

He plays too high and stands up at the snap, which will negate his power versus NFL players. His strength and size has allowed him to
bully his opponents in D2 and it'll likely be difficult to change what he's always done to stay lower. He's a size, strength and speed prospect, based
on that grainy footage, but now he'll need to get to work. Hand usage is probably another issue, but the film is too blurry to tell for sure. Roberts
just casually chucks blockers like frisbees.

I would be curious to see what his Combine workout numbers would have been, because he does appear to have pretty good quickness and closing speed
for a big man. I wonder if he's capable of playing DE?

I'll be rooting for him and very curious to get a look at him this summer.

Roberts got three top-30 in-person visits from NFL teams – the Arizona Cardinals, the Los Angeles Chargers and the Atlanta Falcons. In addition, he got Zoom visits from the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens.

“They try to gauge where everyone else sees you at,” he said. “They’re looking at me as possibly a mid-to-late round pick. I was told after three rounds, stay by the phone.”

Roberts is seen by most as an interior defensive line option first. But with his length and speed he is also an option at end.
“Talking to teams, they like my size and athleticism,” Roberts said. “They think I can play as a flex-guy, that 3 to heavy-5 guy.”

This is likely me being way too optimistic but look at Sam Roberts play and tell me he doesn't look like Willie McGinest on the field. Kid is 6'5 290 pounds, very smooth moves and pursuit. He is not a DT to me, looks perfect as a 3-4 DE or 3-4 OLB like McGinest.
Hope he translates in the NFL.

Totally different players but people also said Seymour played too high with poor leverage coming out of college. I think this kid will pan out at DE or OLB. He's not a defensive tackle here.

"People" (like Borges) might have said that, but Seymour played low with good technique from his rookie season, imo. He was the guy that stuffed the Raiders on 4th down (Bruschi got most of the credit) and he came in as low as a 6'6" guy can get. His leverage was fine as he barely took a backwards step in all his time here. Richard was good day one.

I listened to Evan Lazar interview Eric Galko, the guy that ran the Shrine Bowl, in which Roberts played, and he stated that Roberts played low with good technique, so
hopefully I'm dead wrong about him standing up at the snap. It's a really bad quality film.
