Patriots Offensive Line

Speaking of guards, seems strange that they pick a player in the first round whose strength is his mobility , aka "great for the wide zone plan". But in later rounds of the draft select Olinemen that weigh 330 lbs and up.

Why not pick more mobile types that could improve under the NFL weight/ training program??

They did. #69

Because if you get those 330lbs types down to 305, you might have something. Also, as you saw plenty of yesterday, 'the great wide zone plan' is only a small percentage of what they do.
Or still be slow.

I don't have next-gen stats to back it up, but we certainly haven't been shy about running behind Strange after two games. He's not steamrolling people, but his elite quickness and overall body control is easy enough to see and we've wasted no time calling plays that ask him to do a lot. There was a beautiful quick hitter yesterday where he executed a difficult reach block against a DL and instantly turned him out of the hole before the guy could react and Harris went for a nice gain through a small crease. He's getting wins.

I was a huge Joe Thuney fan, but Strange has been better than he was as a rookie.

So are you saying it was a good thing to guarantee over 10 million to a player that has been nothing but disappointing in the 4 years he's been here?

Putting that 10 million in context, relative to the player's performance, doesn't look so bad.

Context is everything.

Doomed!

1. Philadelphia Eagles (No Change from Week 1)

Weakest Link: G Landon Dickerson

Upcoming Opponent: Washington Commanders

The Eagles continue to field the best offensive line in the game, and it’s helping them dominate on offense and crush overs each week. Landon Dickerson may still be arguably the unit's weakest link, but it’s an unfair descriptor of a player who has allowed just one pressure through two games. The Eagles play Washington in Week 3, and while the Commanders still have talent on the defensive front, that unit hasn’t shown it can hold up to this kind of assault.

2. Kansas City Chiefs (Up 2)

Weakest Link: G Trey Smith

Upcoming Opponent: Indianapolis Colts

Kansas City showed against the Chargers that it still has an excellent offensive line overall. Patrick Mahomes was pressured on 36% of his dropbacks, but that was going up against arguably the best edge rush duo in football this season. Consequently, Orlando Brown Jr. has struggled somewhat this season, earning a 39.2 PFF pass-blocking grade, but he’s not going to face a similar threat against Indianapolis this week.

3. New England Patriots (Up 3)

Weakest Link: G Cole Strange

Upcoming Opponent: Baltimore Ravens

Technically, rookie Cole Strange is the weakest link on this line, but he was able to go toe-to-toe with Cameron Heyward in his second start and look capable while doing so. He gave up some pressure and a few more losses that never got to become pressure, but the fact the team believed in him enough to give him that assignment speaks volumes. The Patriots' offense isn’t playing well, but the line isn’t the source of the problem.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Down 1)

Weakest Link: G Luke Goedeke

21. New York Jets (Up 3)

Weakest Link: T Max Mitchell
Upcoming Opponent: Cincinnati Bengals

This isn’t the line the Jets expected to have before the season began, but it took a step in the right direction this week. Rookie Max Mitchell has surrendered seven pressures and a penalty, and George Fant has coughed up nine pressures and two penalties. But perhaps the biggest disappointment so far is big-money free agent Laken Tomlinson, who has surrendered 10 pressures and carries a 35.0 PFF run-blocking grade. If Tomlinson doesn’t improve quickly, that will have been a disastrous addition.

24. Buffalo Bills (Down 1)

Weakest Link: T Spencer Brown
Upcoming Opponent: Miami Dolphins

The Bills are cooking right now, but they’ll be hoping that the offensive line — especially now that they’re experiencing injuries — won’t derail the momentum. Center Mitch Morse left the game injured in Week 2 and has a short week to avoid missing time. Three of the starters carry below-average PFF pass-blocking grades through two weeks, and not one of the starting five has an above-average run-blocking grade.

25. Miami Dolphins (No Change)

Weakest Link: G Liam Eichenberg
Upcoming Opponent: Buffalo Bills

New signings Terron Armstead and Connor Williams continue to look like significant upgrades, with Armstead in particular now owning the best overall grade on the line and yet to allow either a sack or a hit on his quarterback. Liam Eichenberg has allowed six pressures en route to an 18.6 pass-blocking grade. The Bills can deploy pressure all across the front, and Miami needs a better plan at left guard to stop that from becoming an obvious problem.

I really wanted Landon for the Pats. I haven't kept up with him like I normally do with Bama players. Any thoughts on him apart from this?

Although Dickerson has 1 year experience on Cole Strange, Dickerson is not playing quite as well this year as Strange who is a rookie.
Strange is ranked 37th and Dickerson is ranked 40th.

Love it, Herron to LV. Watch them stupidly play him at RT

He was a Center at 'Bama but was drafted by Philly and he wasn't going to beat out Jason Kelce, so he was moved to Guard and has a rookie season that
wasn't perfect, but he started 14 games for one of the top OLs in the league and generally impressed.

He's a powerhouse and if he can stay healthy has a bright future.

I always like opinions on Olinemen, but sometimes I wonder about PFF's quality control.

I applaud their panning Miami's Eichenberg, who was overrated at Notre Dame, then overdrafted by Miami, flopped at RT and is now doing the same inside. He's a balanced combination of slowness, confusion and weakness. It's hard to say which is his worst trait. He looked like a toad in a lawnmower trying to block Barmore on opening day. Always view Golden Domer's coming into the draft with a degree of skepticism and you'll be better off.

However, they listed a couple of really good players as "weak links" which is relatively dumb, imo. If you put Spencer Brown in Las Vegas then he'd be one of their best guys. Also, how they listed Goedeke instead of that rookie Center than can't shotgun snap is a mystery to me. Maybe they felt sorry for him after Brady reamed him a new asshole on national TV.

I follow/watch Bama, that's where I first saw and enjoyed watching him. I normally stay caught up when their players get drafted but for some reason I didn't for Landon. So the info is appreciated. 🥰

A scene that I have unfortunately witnessed from behind my Honda and from atop my John Deere. :crying:

Nothing to do with the O Line ffs. Mac got the pass away before the injury and his ankle just got caught underneath the defenders leg.
Just a side note the first time we heard that was when we played at old head In Kinsale our caddie was hysterical and he had a lot of oh ffs that day none directed at me FYI. Every time you say it, it brings me back.
