Week 4 2022 Pats at Packers

I think we are going to get destroyed versus Green Bay. I plan to cringe often watching Hoyer throw passes that appear to have been launched by a Nerf cannon.

I expect the team to go backwards in all three phases and the doom and gloom generated will be pure ambrosia for all card-carrying Felgerites. This mess will be a gift

for all those weasels in the fan base who need to fill the emptiness in their failed lives by wailing, griping, being petty and generally engaging in mental midgetry whenever
possible, because they'll be able to point in any direction and find problems.

I say we lose by 4 TDs and may not score a single one.

The key to this game is stopping the run and winning turnover battles. Aside from Mac, the biggest injury concerns are Godcheaux and Guy, both important pieces of the run defense. If those guys are out or limited, Barmore, Roberts, and others are going to have to step up against the run next to a heavily rotated Carl Davis. Bentley will be big. I don't expect to see nearly as much Mack Wilson against these bigger backs. McMillan and Jennings instead of Wilson/Uche. And yes, it may be a Tavai game.

Jon Jones largely on the speedy and dangerous Doubs. Cobbs and Lazard are solid, but don't require anything special in terms of coverage. I strongly suspect Belichick will roll out a lot of 2 high safety defenses, with the non-McCourty safety (which is a MASH unit) crashing on a run read, or perhaps starting the 2 deep coverage from a position in the box, assigned to gain depth quickly. Have to close down the middle running.

On offense, it's no mistakes. The interior OL needs to handle Clark, which should be an interesting test for Andrews and Strange, as the pure power guys have been a struggle for Andrews and are supposed to be where Strange struggles as well. Devonte Wyatt isn't even listed as a starter, but I'm going to list him as a concern as well. His snaps are limited, but he's definitely flashed, especially last week, and his combination of speed, quickness, power, and size could definitely give our OL trouble.

I don't know Jaire Alexander's status, but that will be critical.

I suspect the running game and defense will do enough so that Hoyer can steer the ship into a position where the game is not out of reach late. And call me crazy, but what the hell...I see a CB named Jones (Jack, if pressed to pick one) winning this on a late pick-6 on non-disguised coverage: Rodgers underestimates the jump the CB can get on the ball and tries to gun an out to Cobbs in at the first down marker.

This is the sort of game they have "no shot at winning" that the Patriots tend to surprise and rise to the challenge. They rally around Hoyer, lean on the defense and the run, and pull it out, just because this season the NFL is obviously like that.

I'm thinking the Pats will invite GB to run, actually. Winning the turnover margin will be crucial for this team in every game this entire year.

This is the perfect post to start the karma thread ....

The idea being that GB running helps to shorten the game? I was thinking about that, but those two backs are not a pair that you want to allow to get rolling downhill. I'm torn on this, and I think it's mixed, which is why what I wrote was kinda all over the place:
I think they spend much of the game in a 2 deep shell, which invites the run. But I don't think they're going to let it happen. I would expect them to pair that with a safety crashing on run defense when starting deep, and starting in the box but still assigned to get depth fast into a deep zone on a pass read.

It really feels like the rest of this season is gonna be like watching the scrubs fight for a roster spot in an august preseason game. Or the Philly 76ers when they were saying trust the process.

But in Bill we trust.

It’s all part of the plan. Next year right? No? 2024? Whoops there goes the advantage of having a QB on a rookie deal…..

Yawn. What a shockingly surprising assessment. Bloodless, boring drone...

I notice that Guy is out, and he's been outstanding so far, imo. Pair that with Godchaux questionable with a back and it's not hard to imagine them running a lot on us.

I guess this is the week we see Barmore playing a ton of snaps, but my guess is that we'll miss Guy quite a bit. Speaking of Barmore, I don't know if I'm seeing it right, but he
looks to be late off the ball more often than not. At 'Bama he was usually the first. I have no theories.

I mean, this isn’t even about the Packers game specifically … just feels like sensationalized pot-stirring at this point.

You’re not optimistic about the team’s direction and are not confident in their head coach. That’s OK, and to some extent I can understand being guarded about their prospects. Not sure about the dressed-up hot takes, though, especially in a pre-game thread.

I'm on board with Roberto71 and the Axel hype train. Woo woo muthafers.

Patriots win going away with run game and slants.

Nickel and dime all game long except in short yardage situations. Disguising coverage is a given. I agree with an extra S in the box for GB's run game.
GB is good passing and very good rushing the ball although GB's run blocking is below avg so credit their RBs. Their WRs are no better than ours and probably a little worse.
The Pats passing game will be opportunistic but not good overall. Our rushing game is good.
GB is not good at defending the rush but outstanding at defending the pass (see what they did to Tompa Bay).
Pats run game is the only clear advantage for the Pats on offense.
STs is another Pats advantage.

Good tackling by our LBs and DBs is a key. Turnovers is a another key.
Slow the game down and make it a slugfest. Keep GB pinned deep all game long to force long drives by GB. Prevent big passing plays.

  1. Not sure what's going to happen in the games at this point, but I'll be watching and cheering, same as always. If you don't want to root for the Pats I'm sure the network will force feed us the BradyBucs every week, enjoy .
  2. Whether Mac is out for a couple of weeks or for the rest of the season I think it may be good for his development to be outside the lines for a bit observing the game. Some here may have forgotten that St. Thomas had a full season as a 4th QB under his belt before he took a snap in anger.
  3. I still think Bill had an O/C in mind (rhymes with Will O'Ryan), but he was not available and BB wouldn't fuck Saban over. There wasn't anyone ready in house, it didn't make sense to bring in a new system for one year. That's the logic behind the "experiment". I suppose he could have seen if Charlie Weis was available.
  4. I do think the game this week will be closer than expected.

If your shtick wasn't 100% doom and gloom, Bill is a crappy HC, it would pass off as "passionate", but that isn't the case here. That shtick is getting old.

It would be fitting. In 2002, we were all high on superbowl fever. We destroyed the Steelers, then someone else, beat the chiefs and faced the (then) lowly Packers who played IIRC a backup QB. They beat us, and that was the story of 2002. It went downhill from there.
