Misuse and Regression of Mac Jones and How to Fix

I’ve been clamoring for Jonnu and Hunter to be central players in the offense since they were signed.
I don’t care what his stats were, Jonnu clearly has the athleticism to be a top 5-10 TE in the league. He’s a beast with the ball, and very fast for a TE.

Feed him and Hunter all game long.
It's confusing that they went out and spent on those 2 and have barely used them.

Henry, to my eye had a very good year last last year including what, something like 80 targets and no drops, not to mention being quite good in the redzone.

Jonnu struggled all of last year and we all saw it and many of us scratched our heads wondering on the why of it.

That they, both, very capable TEs have gone dark this year which is seemingly schematic is the mind bender here, especially with a great running game and quality and developing young quarterback.

Hunter, Jonnu, Mac, Agholor, Bourne didn’t suddenly forget how to play. The crappy offensive staff is learning how to coach in the nfl in real-time. The red zone is also pathetic

I haven't looked at any film or anything, but if I were to guess when it comes to Henry is he's forced to block so much more this season with the pass protection being so bad.

I agree, there is far better offensive talent on the team than what the production is showing. The coaching and scheme is not getting the most out of the talent and it's pretty clear to all of us to see. When we at home can call out the plays before the snap, you can be darn sure the opposing teams can.

Extremely damning video by Orlovsky showing the amateur offensive staff with Mac’s QB dropbacks completely not even synced up with the WR routes. No question now it’s crappy offensive coaching from Judge, Rothstein, and Patricia.

I think Orlovsky is over simplifying and dramatizing here with a dash of cherry picking thrown in. Issues? Yes, but they're not as pervasive as he makes it appear.
Part of a receiver's job is to be ready for the ball when & where the QB needs to deliver it. That means he's gained some separation, he's where he's supposed to be and he's paying attention so the QB knows he can throw the ball without worry of an int. Meyers shines at this. All that is on the WR. Everything speeds up and often breaks down when the OL can't protect well. QB protection is critical. Give Mac 4 secs of a clean pocket and he'll complete almost every pass. Timing takes practice.

Spacing, otoh, is normally on the play designer and should have been worked out in TC and preseason games. What I'm seeing is receivers who aren't consistently following the play design which causes the spacing issues. That's on the coaches rather than on the play design. That should be able to be fixed, first in the classroom with some individual testing and then on the field with full speed practices to get the QB and WRs on the same page consistently. I'm sure every team works on syncing, timing and spacing every day in practice.

Agree it’s on the crappy offensive coaching

This Ringer article from August was correct. Mac has regressed due to crappy coaching by Judge, Rothstein, and Patricia

I was glad to see some 2TE in the backfield, reminds me of some plays from Bill O’Brien’s elite 2011 Patriots 2TE offense. In general the Pats should maximize creative ways to keep both Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith on the field. Sit wastes of targets Parker and Thornton on the bench as the OLine can’t protect more than 2 seconds anyways, ditch the vertical plays.

Another excellent read by Evan Lazar.

1. Shows how disjointed the play calling is by this novice offensive coaching staff
2. Explains how the OLine is at fault, Mac is getting it out quick
3. Agreed we need even more presnap motion and play action. Basically abandon shotgun and the dogsh-t plays drawn up this off-season and use only the 2011 Patriots offense playbook.

12 personnel (2TE) is so much better than 11 personnel (shotgun). How about stop being a mediocre offensive staff and play majority of snaps in 12 personnel (2TE)…

  • Personnel: 63% of snaps in 11 personnel, 37% in 12 personnel.*
  • Personnel production: 4.4 yards/play in 11 personnel, 6.5 yards/play in 12 personnel.

Contrary to bad offensive staff belief, shotgun does NOT help Mac. A defensive end can just tee off and sprint in full pass rush without worrying about any run assignments. And don’t try any crappy draw-run counters from shotgun, will not help. Just play Mac in 2TE personnel under center. This is the solution. Abandon sh-tty shotgun formation
