The Vikings (Not the game thread)

The 2nd Patriots game I ever went to was against the Vikings who had decided not to re-sign their well-known QB, Joe Kapp for the 1970 season. Neither did anybody else until
the Patriots made him the highest-paid player in the league. He was new in town and standing on the sidelines for that game, looking around at a crumbling College stadium and
then at his former team who killed us that day.

Kapp was absolutely awful for us and got the shit kicked out of him behind a horrendous OL. He only played that one season leading us to a 2-12 season before getting into a beef
with the NFL over his refusal to sign a "standard player's contract" and he never played again.

We sucked and I think he decided that he would look better if he didn't just outright quit the Pats for his own safety since he was famous for his "machismo" AKA Mexican balls,
but that's what a lot of folks thought at the time. He might've been the worst starting QB we ever had. He was all sizzle and no steak. A total media creation.

Also, I believe that Game of Thrones used former Vikes coach Bud Grant as the template for the King of the White Walkers, but the KIng had more personality.

Randy Moss was a Minnesota Viking twice and never went to a Super Bowl
Randy Moss was a Patriot once and went to the Super Bowl.

I love the Vikings. I've always loved the Vikings - just can never root against them.

I think it's a combo of things. The wrong way TD, the 4 SB losses with zero wins, managing to miss the SB with that insane team at 15-1, John Randle, Chris Carter, Hershel Walker trade, Randy Moss, Denny Green's rants...and just that they wear a rich, but still kinda bright, purple.

That said...for the next few days they can suffer the football equivalent of dying in a fire while suffering from the public humiliation of being dressed for prom and falling into a huge puddle of e-Bola.

I agree; it's very hard to dislike the Vikes. Good football history, some great players and great fanbase. I thought they were great to watch in 2009.

I went to a Bears-Vikings game when I was in Chicago for school. What I noticed was that the Bears fans were generally very laid-back and cool.

The Vikings fans, however, were fucking obnoxious animals and I saw numerous examples of people starting shit. One guy was simply begging
for it calling all Bears fans pussies, etc., etc. Nobody hammered him, which wouldn't have been a major challenge, but he lit up a cigarette and
that allowed a uniformed woman to hand him a ticket for a 300 dollar fine. The crowd laughed their ass off, but he ended up being dragged
out by security shortly after.

Everybody knows that Philly and Raider fans often behave like sub-humans, but the skoal morons are widely underrated and delusional.

Hawg, you must have forgotten the behavior of Patriots fans in the 70's at Shaffer Stadium. I recall going to a game against the Dolphins with the temperature in the 20's. Many of the "fans" were stripped down to the waste with fights breaking out all through the stadium.
Those were the Jim Plunkett to Randy Vataha days.

Back in the mid 80s, the Vikings were on telly highlights quite a bit. I flirted with the idea of supporting them.

Sadly, my Pats fan friend persuaded me otherwise and I have missed out.
Ah, the 1980s New England Patriots. They actually weren't too bad under Ron Meyer and Raymond Berry.

It was the early 1990s and the Rod Rust and Dick McPherson eras that tested our fortitude as Patriots fans - the peaks achieved by the Parcells and Belichick teams seem so much higher because of the depths plumbed by those two previous regimes.

If you managed to hang with the rest of us through that, you've earned your reward.

went to many games and saw a lot of bad football in those times. That was peak Dad season ticket era there. Also saw a lot of drunken shenanigans, which, to a late teenage observer was quite entertaining, and educational. My Dad always said your Mom doesn't need to know about this shit..... LOL

I remember being a Patriots fan in the early 70's, through the year 2000. They never won a Super Bowl in those years. Now there are people talking about the Vikings, saying they have never won a Super Bowl. I also remember the 2001 Patriots coming through with a Super Bowl victory. Believe me, if the Patriots could win a superbowl, Any Team can win one. That includes the current Minnesota Vikings team. And, don't be surprised of the Patriots get Blasted and lose Big Time tomorrow night. Or, they could win, and surprise us happily, again. We'll have to watch the game, to find out. Or find out Friday morning.

Yes, indeed. My first memory was of a victory of the (LA) Rams - 86-87 season, I think. Eason threw a Hail Mary, which was tipped by Stanley Morgan and caught by Irving Fryar.

We lost to Denver in the playoffs and I still hold a bit of a grudge.

Thankfully, I became a fan in the season after the Bears Superbowl.

It's been a ride way better than I imagined. If you'd asked me at the start of the 2001 season if I'd thought we'd win the Superbowl, I'd have laughed at you.

My favourite memories are that Vinatieri kick and Malcolm Butler.

Exactly. Something I always emphasise to new fans of the NFL is that anyone really can win. Stick with your team, because you won't know when it's your turn.

Are you referring to the kick in the Snow Bowl game, or the game winner vs. the Rams in SB XXXVI?

(The only proper response to this question is "Yes.")
