Celtics

Very impressive. Brown is 26 and Tatum is what only 23? The key is how long Horford can keep going, he’d be a huge piece to fill once he retires.

Overall the league has so many talented young players right now.

I agree that there's a lot of fine young players in the league right now, but there aren't a lot of great teams.

I recall the days of the loaded Celtics, Lakers, 76ers, and Bucks squads of the 1980s.

It's hard to believe that the 76ers squad with Dr. J, Moses Malone, Mo Cheeks, Bobby Jones, and Andrew Toney only won one championship. But that's how strong the overall league was back then.

That team would dominate the league today.

Showing my age but I followed them as well. So many great games from them , shame no ring.

That was late-career J, too (and later career Malone) when that team finally got together like that. That team plus young Charles Barkley should have won more than one - but the Celtics were just better.

You're right though, that team would have won 70+ games in today's game. Imagine with the prolific 3-pointers as well, Andrew Toney would have been MVP-level type stuff.

It's hard to believe, but Bird would have been even more valuable and frightening in today's game. He would have won 5+ MVPs as a 6'10" point forward who was the annual-presumptive-until-proven-otherwise 3 pt champion, who was a top-3 NBA passer to make you pay if you overplayed him? Are you f...ing kidding me?

all of which speaks to my ongoing old man's lament. What have they done to my beloved game of basketball?

Cheers

It's just math. The skills are there, minus the variety of intermediate range pull-ups that defined the Jordan Era. And without those, the variety of creative passes and cuts. The talent level right now is high, and there is a certain beauty in the precision of the current game, and the C's particularly.

But you know me. And get off my lawn!

Cheers, :toast:

The Celtics are steam rolling teams. How good will they be if Williams comes back? They have an awesome bench.
They're really a well-oiled machine right now. Malcolm Brogdon and Dennis White have made a huge difference, among others. White is so much better now than when he arrived here late last season.

I know you meant Derrick :)

White's defense was always there but night and day difference shooting-wise after working with that shooting guru over the summer. He said the biggest issue was he used to fade back slightly when shooting, now he goes straight up and it's made all the difference. Hats off to Brad Stevens', his trades have been great. Can't wait to see what he does at the trade deadline, and maybe he stands pat, either way it's 'in Brad I trust' for me.

And I've never seen a team go from the best defense to the best offense the following year like this. I'm not one bit worried about the lack of defense either, they still seem to be able to turn it on when they need it. Of course when RW3 is back that will make a big difference.

I'd add Caldwell Jones to the list.

He was a great defensive player, but mentioning him gives me a chance to recount the greatest quote in pro sports history.

After a big win, Caldwell, who loved to fuck with the press, was asked by a reporter if it was the greatest moment of his life.

I'm going on memory here, but Jones replied:

No, man, the greatest moment of my life was when the Flintstones went from a half-hour to a full one-hour show. A full
60 of Fred and Barney? Hooooo-eeeeeeee!!!!!

as a coach Brad is SO much better in the front office.

I didn't even realize I write Dennis. I'm an idiot.

This team is a playoff juggernaut waiting to happen. Rob coming back will put the team in a position to have "microwave defense." They should be able to put together a run whenever they really need one.

This team will have 8 guys any team would be happy to have as 20+ minute players (and that's assuming Gallinari doesn't come back) BEFORE you get to guys like Pritchard, Hauser, and Griffin.

I think we had this argument last season but I've seen the light, I'm in agreement now. :) It just sucks that Gallinari blew out his knee, they would be that much stronger, but Hauser has done a decent job in his place with better than expected defense too, probably better than what Gal would have brought.
