Random Football News: 2023

The real reason Josh McDaniels accepted and then backed out of the Colts' HC job within 36 hrs is finally surfacing now, 4 years later.
I've read some things that are just now coming out that I know to be true. I'll tell what I know from back then and there may be more to come.

McD found out some things after he was announced as HC that gave him pause:

For one, McD was unsure about GM Chris Ballard prior to taking the job. He didn't think Ballard was trustworthy enough not to throw anyone under the bus and not to leak behind the scenes stuff. Then after he accepted the job, McD learned that QB Andrew Luck was not only not committed to football, he no longer enjoyed the game. Luck's retirement was imminent.

But the final straw was Irsay himself.
McD accepted the job 2 days after the Pats won SB LI vs Atlanta and Irsay went to McD's house the same day to welcome him aboard. Irsay made a stuporous fool of himself in front of Josh, Josh's wife, Laura, and their kids. Josh decided to back out right then. Irsay had no one to blame but himself and his addictions.

Btw, this is generally known to most front offices within the NFL.

More will likely be coming out soon.

If that was the Kay Adams video, Gronk was having another pop at the Patriots, saying when they won, it felt like a loss in the facility the next few days. And if they lost.....

Adams goaded him into saying this and Gronk is too thick to realise it and just blabs.

And Gronk, not accepting losing and keeping standards so high was the whole point. It's what made you a superstar in the game when on draft day, your stock had collapsed and Bill selected you.

Ok but don’t care.

Josh McDaniels blew 4-5 leads up by 17+ points this year, and has somehow managed to piss off 4 different franchises - Raiders, Colts, Rams, Broncos. A terrible coach without riding TB12’s coattails. Horrifically bad talent evaluator (NKeal, Tebow, Chad Jackson, Maroney)
I hope he doesn’t get fired too soon and somehow finagles his way back.

many of the rumors have Brady going out to Vegas which I think would be a huge mistake. I like to Daniels just fine as an OC but not as a head coach.

Despite all that he managed to help the Patriots win 5 Super Bowls, 1as defacto OC (2005) and 4 as OC.

Josh was a good oc. he was able to help multiple qbs succeed in the offense. he made orton look the best he ever looked. only beef i ever really had was how one dimensional the 07 offense was. it cost them a sb. and he is likely not the only one to blame for that.

I care because it's not really so much about Josh McDaniels as much as it highlights that some of the owners in the NFL can exhibit as many vile tendencies as their worst players can. On those terms, everyone needs to be held to the same standard of morality.

Pats didn’t do anything in 2005 and Charlie Weiss was clearly the OC in 2004. I think the Patriots would have more than 6 rings if BB chose differently in 2005 than McIdiot for 15 yrs. Daboll, for one, is proving to be a far superior coach. Has succeeded in multiple places now without BB while McIdiot has failed every single time he didn’t have BB/TB12 to ride on

Also the media's narrative was (shockingly) completely wrong, and McDaniels' reputation throughout the league wasn't damaged at all by this.

I agree. Most in the league knew Luck was toast. Heck, we surmised that on this board for months. And no crazy Irsay story will ever surprise me. I like Ballard but I guess Josh thought he was a weasel which is apropo for the Colts.

I think Cowherd speaks a lot of truth here on Tampa and Brady. They are making a public plea for him to stay.

But by god is this not getting boring? I wish he would retire because the media think they must report on him and he dominates the shows. Every 2nd segment on Skip and Shannon is about Tom, Cowherd, Roche, all of them give way too much airtime to him.

I don't agree. "Far superior" smacks of recency bias.
Consider that Daboll was never made the OC of the Pats. He was a defensive assistant then WRs coach. BB chose McDaniels to lead the offense as OC in 2006 over Daboll even though Daboll had longevity. That is why Daboll followed Mangini to the Jets. That didn't last long. He bounced around for 4 years as OC of the Browns (also under Mangini), Dolphins and KC for a year without great success, Reid let him go and BB saved his failing career by bringing him back as TEs coach for a few years. Then he went to Bama as OC where he gained a rep as a QB guru for helping Jalen Hurts and Tua do great things. Next up he helped Josh Allen although his first 2 years were awful and now Daniel Jones. It took Daboll 18 years to become an NFL OC, while McD has been a very good OC or better since 2006. Daboll has only had success in the NFL as OC since 2020.
