Brady retires

One of my friends who is not a Patriots fan saw the movie said it was really good.
It really surprised me. I was not thinking of seeing it at first as I think the title is misleading. A friend asked me to go and said it was getting great reviews and I really love Sally Fields so I said Ok. I could not believe how funny it was and how the 4 ladies drew you into their lives. It is not a heavy movie by any means but it has moments of poignancy. But honestly, for folks that love the Patriots and love football which is pretty much everyone on this board, you will absolutely love it. Reliving that Falcons SB was worth the price of admission alone. LOL

Look at this. It is kicking major butt! BTW, Brady produced it from his 199 project.

He just cost the Bucs $35M in dead cap for '23. :coffee:

And also ensured he retired as a Buc.
From Florio:
The retirement letter also doesn’t prevent the Patriots from signing him to a one-day contract. Again, once he becomes a free agent in March, he can sign any type of contract with any team.

I know this is a bit off-topic, but I didn’t want to start a new thread but I saw 80 for Brady last night at the movies and it was really good. It was really funny, but also very touching to follow these four women and their lives, as they were huge patriots fans. What was even better is I got to relive the Atlanta Super Bowl again on the big screen which was pretty awesome. I highly recommend the movie for anyone that loves a little bit of nostalgia, but also wants to laugh a lot. Brady is only in it a little bit and also Amendola, and Edelman, and Gronk. The four women are really really funny. It was a great time.
I am astonished this movie got good reviews. I had decided out of hand it was bound to be a stinker. So much for making a judgment based on zero information. Based on comments by my fellow Planeteers, I'll give it a go (although not until I can stream it. Last 3 or 4 times I went to an actual movie theater, I was asleep after the first 5 minutes. I can sleep at home for free. :))

Seriously. A major downside of the theatres getting these more comfortable seats!

As I always tell the Little Wanderers: People tell you that you can't judge a book by its cover. That's true, but it's still bad advice. If that were true, you'd need to read every book in order to decide which one to read!

You just make the best decision you can with the information you have available, and learn to enjoy being surprised and wrong.

Good to know. There was so much misinformation being put out there and more bad info was coming every day. I was reluctant to put "ensures he retires as a Buc" because it didn't seem right but I read it so many times on big media sites I came to believe it. Florio, the lawyer, sets the record straight. Thanks for posting that, Mazz.
In fact, after a little more research, I found that retirement papers don't have to be filed at all - there's no NFL requirement - and if they are filed they don't mean he can't come back and play anytime he wants. So maybe it's just Brady's way of keeping other teams off his back.

"The retirement letter also doesn’t prevent the Patriots from signing him to a one-day contract. Again, once he becomes a free agent in March, he can sign any type of contract with any team.

Beyond getting a little free publicity and attention two days before the Super Bowl, the retirement letter has only one practical impact. It makes it awkward for the Bucs to ask him to do a one-year dummy deal that drives down his $35.1 million dead-money cap charge for 2023. “I’m retired,” would be the automatic response to any effort to get him to sign a new deal.

But he could still sign a one-year contract for the veteran minimum, with the Buccaneers officially placing him on the reserve-retired list after June 1. That would result in a $10.776 million cap charge for 2023, and it would push $24.328 million in dead money to 2024.

It will be interesting to see whether the Buccaneers try to get him to do it, and whether he hides (disingenuously) behind the idea that he has retired. If he resists the effort to reduce his cap consequences for 2023, Brady will definitely become a free agent in March. Which will allow him to sign with any other team at any time.

And the retirement letter does absolutely nothing to change that."

Brady is setting himself up to be an assassin for a team like the niners next season. Godd team losses qb after the trade deadline in steps TFB to save the day.

I was pretty surprised he announced he was retiring. It sure looked to me like he could play last season. The problems they had on offense were scrubs in the interior of the line, the worst run game in the league by every metric, Godwin not being totally recovered from the ACL, and a big part of me thinks that evans was playing through some type of injury.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes back, but then there was no need to announce the retirement unless he was pretty sure. Maybe there’s just more than we know going on behind the scenes.

His kids are growing up. He is missing that. He’s done. Over. Finished. Let it go.

He really had a mediocre season for Brady. Yes they had injuries so did every other team. At times he looked good but not like he did 3 or 4 years back.
It was time and he knew it. Time to let him move on.

With that cast, it would have been difficult for it to be an outright stinker. Those four pros could read the phone book for 90 minutes and it would probably be fine.

Again, surprised you're a fan of these old gals. If you like Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, you should check out the TV series "Grace and Frankie" - great writing and many belly laughs. Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen round out the cast - playing gay men who are the ex husbands of the two women - and they are really good too. As you mention, talented actors can make just about anything seem entertaining, and if the material is also good, double win.

You act like my Mom didn't rave about Grace and Frankie until I actually watched it. :coffee:

I think this is the state of entertainment today, and it's been going on for a long time. If these older, high-quality actors still have their wits about them, they work for cheaper and give a pro-level effort, because their pros. Why do you think these Lifetime/Hallmark Christmas movies are so popular? They have budgets of like $1 mil, and spend half of it to get one older actor to play the mom/dad, and they knock it out of the park in their 3-4 scenes.

'Hot in Cleveland' was a perfect example of this. How does a sitcom get 6 seasons in the 2010s on broadcast TV? You get Betty White, Jane Leeves ('Frasier') Wendy Malick ('Will and Grace') and Valerie Bertinelli out of mothballs and have them tell jokes for 22 minutes. The actual writing isn't important.

The problem is that the entertainment industry is so derivative now, that new stars can't me made on their talent. The talent itself isn't better or worse than in previous generations, but the ability to hone their craft in pet projects most certainly is.

I mean, this is why Youtube and Twitch are as popular as they are. Literally anyone can be entertaining with an internet connection. and in many cases, MORE entertaining.

I've successfully derailed this thread long enough, but I think it's worth talking about more, and not in a 'back in my day X was better' nonsense.
