Enjoy Retirement, DMac!

He was a very good player and excellent leader for us through 3 SB victories. Great memories.
His leadership will definitely be missed. I'm confident another player will step up in his leadership void. Dugger, maybe.

Devon was a great football player. I guess it's just his time to decide to retire. God bless him, and his family. No more NFL football practice for him! He played throughout the complete Patriots 2nd great 3-Championship session.

What a player. Enjoy your retirement DMac.

A hugely important figure on the defensive side of the ball for the second part of the Dynasty.

His move from corner to free safety may go down as one of the best positional adjustment made by Belichick.

1. Huge hole at FS. How do they fill this? Man cover-1 is BB’s best defense and it needs a good FS and CB1.

2. What’s DMAC’s dead cap hit ??

3. General question but is there basically no way to avoid a dead cap hit when a player retires?? One factor for roster planning in the future

Voidable years in the contract.

It makes me think of Matthew Slater, another great Patriot. I hope he plays another year!

Patriots Matthew Slater Reveals Reason For Return in 2023

A chance encounter, devoid of fanfare, was all Slater needed to realize that Belichick wanted him back in the Foxboro fold.

“I bumped into him outside the weight room,” Slater told Steve Buckley of The Athletic. “I was going out, he was coming. I told him I felt like I wanted to come back and play. And it was very well received. He was excited that I felt that way.

2. $9.7M

3. All teams try to avoid dead cap money but there's no way to avoid it all the time. Every team recognizes dead cap as a sunk cost. Things happen...retirement, injury, legal, death. If a player signs a 3 yr contract and retires after year 1 the team is hit with 2 years of dead cap unless the contract is structured to avoid dead cap. BB frequently uses incentives and yearly roster bonuses to protect against dead cap. That's the best way I've seen to avoid dead cap.
Voidable contract years are basically fake contract seasons that are used for salary cap manipulation. The purpose of the void year is to allow a team to pay a player a big signing bonus and prorate that bonus for more years than actually exists on the contract. Voidable years actually guarantees more dead cap money on the books in a future year. Voidable years is done when a team feels a player is too valuable to let go but the team needs to create cap space to be able to afford the player.
