Didn't see this posted anywhere, but IMO McCourty deserves a thread of his own on his retirement. One of the few remaining standouts from our Glory Years who made zillions of important plays for us. Pats made a "tribute video" which I am trying to embed here.

A great players and an even better person. When David Andrews was asked about the possibility of him and Slater retiring, Andrews couldn't even put together a response. He walked away from the podium in tears. McCourty's impact in the locker room can't be quantified. The Pats just lost the unquestioned leader of the secondary.

Well deserved and he didn't stretch it out longer than he should have, unlike so many others that have tried to grab that 1 last championship. Congrats to Devon McCourty on a most outstanding career!!

I don't buy this.
I'm mixed on it. I don't love it, but 1)the Patriots do almost everything by committee; 2) they have been talking about "positionless football," specifically in the defensive backfield, and 3) it would have the benefit of the offense not knowing exactly what a given player was doing on each play. Especially with so many DBs coming back with familiarity in the defense, it would give a ton of flexibility to be able to spin the dial on coverages pre- and post- snap.

That said, I tend to agree with you and would very much like to see them get a guy with clear attributes and experience for post safety/1-deep.

Don't think it's a good year to draft one unless you want a slow safety.

Meet Quan Martin. His long speed is just fine, but he's so twitchy and explosive! Plus, he's one of Bret Bielema's kids, which you know Belichick likes. Played all over the place for Illinois, so make sure you find him on the tape before each play:

Probably available in round 4, given the glut of DBs.

You found one with speed.
Doubt you find much more in terms of safeties.
The better option may be finding a CB that can be converted to safety.

Quan played both safety and CB. He's mostly listed as a CB in draft guides. I've been pimping for him for awhile now as DMac's replacement.

My pov is probabilities. Doesn't seem to be a lot of options with speed . Quan could be very good, could also be a Bengal

Sounded like a strong CB class. Maybe we take one high who is an elite man-cover corner to play CB1, and take another CB later who is maybe flawed in man coverage but elite in zone coverage and switch him to play FS. I don't feel great about Mills or Jon Jones back there in centerfield
