Mac Jones Injury Watch - Update 30 Sept - Mac is out v Packers

I've been saying this since last year. Why hasn't Bill gotten a more competent back up?
Hoyer has one job (and it's not to play football): It's to mentor Mack Jones through the NFL maturation process

If you ever see Hoyer with a helmet on, you know your team is in a bad spot. I'd rather see Zappe play as a result but it's too soon. It's also probably unfair to ask him to go into Lambeau and give them a shot to win at this stage.

Mac officially ruled out.

zero surprise. why even let the kid walk out onto practice today

Why not? He seems to be moving along ahead of schedule he had his second opinion and perhaps the “ rush to diagnose ie team sources say, it’s a high ankle sprain, wasn’t true. Or perhaps it wasn’t as bad as it seemed. It seems as though he’s not having surgery or he would have most likely had it.

It's more of a cumulative thing when you're talking about a high-ankle sprain," Davis said. "My guess is that it would be that his pain and swelling prevent him from being able to play to the level he wants to. ... Or, it's sprained in a milder way and he's actually stable and able to tolerate it with appropriate taping that may provide some stability, and then he's able to play.
Everyone is just speculating at the moment, When Brady had his surgery on his knee the following day Belichick came out and said Brady was having surgery and it was a season ending injury.

The good news, I'm thinking, is that Mac hasn't opted for surgery despite the second-opinion. Presumably that second-opinion (from a renowned foot/ankle doctor) suggested surgery wasn't necessary (or the best approach), which I'll take as good news.

I'd still be surprised to see him back next week, but the 16th or 23rd (which would be 3-4 weeks from the initial injury, respectively) seems possible.

That's about the only thing that makes sense -- that it simply wasn't as bad as it looked, even if everybody could see his ankle bend in a very bad way and that he was in a ton of pain. I seem to recall the phrase "screaming in pain" tossed around like it was a fact, but now I dunno if somebody exaggerated. Or worse, made shit up based on the fact it was totally plausible.

FWIW, I think the reason we've been seeing Mac throwing a lot of picks is that the kid is taking his role as Team Leader No. 1 a little too literally and he's, at times, trying to make plays where there are none to be had. He doesn't have to carry the entire roster on his back. He's a 2nd year guy who shouldn't be expected to have an instant answer to every situation. The guy is pressing a little
too hard and I'm hoping a little time off could help him come to the same conclusion.

I see the ridiculous practice appearance as possibly more evidence that he's trying to show the guys he's the Unbreakable Fearless Leader, but if he carries that too far he's going
to make it worse for the team, not better. Help out in the QB room all you want, but don't run on that ankle until both you and the Doctors think it's OK. This isn't something you
can gut out.

Trust me as someone whose been through numerous surgeries on my spine and given grim prognosis and working through them and proving them wrong..... I can see this happening and Mac trying to feel himself out.

On the rest trying to prove himself as a team leader I agree, absolutely. Not sure about his appearance I feel it’s more reassuring the team it’s not as dire as predicted . You could be absolutely right.... I can only base my feelings on my own life experience.

A few years ago, Vollmer had his leg broken in a huge pileup, Someone on our OLine (Koppen?) was miked up and you could clearly hear Vollmer scream. It was much worse hearing the replay than it was live.

I think it is just Bill speak so GB might spend a little time preparing for Mac. I am pretty certain Hoyer will play BUT if Bill does put Mac out there, it just further confirms to me that he really needs to go.

One other thing to consider here though, Bill does not want to see a 1-3 record given the terrible start to last season so he may be desperate to get Mac out there to somehow stay at .500.
quadruple-facepalm

I was going to bring that up but decided not to as I didn't see it mentioned anywhere by MIke Reiss, the other media guys etc. I thought it was a dodgy move by Campbell. The ball was gone and he jumps literally on Mac to bring him to the ground.
There we go ...
7. Campbell's hit: If Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell had delivered the same hit that injured Mac Jones on a more established quarterback, such as Tom Brady or Rodgers, would there have at least been a penalty flag? My thought: Y-E-S. That Jones absorbed the full force of the 6-foot-8, 307-pound Campbell pancaking him -- and didn't get the benefit of a roughing-the-passer call despite specific language that defenders aren't allowed to land on top of quarterbacks with all or most of their weight -- was surprising to say the least. It seemed like an obvious miss for a league that otherwise goes out of its way to protect quarterbacks.

I'm told the Pats are eyeing a week 6 return for Mac. Browns, Oct. 16

That'd be two missed games, and three weeks after the initial injury.

Suffice to say the second-opinion likely confirmed a grade-2 injury? I'd have a hard time imagining someone returning after 3 weeks with a grade-3, full tear, especially this early in the season. Seems like a good way to have it linger.
