I looked this up in a Manners book at Barnes and Noble one year. You did nothing wrong. In fact bringing food to a dinner is supposed to be a gift for the host/hostess and it's up to if he/she wants to serve it. An exception would be a pot-luck where everyone contributes equally. I don't know...
