If you don't know about John Prine, please consider investing three and a half minutes of your time on this song. It came out 20 years ago, but it doesn't have a specific time period to which it belongs.
 
John Prine....wow, what an artist. First became familiar with him over 30 years ago.

Saw him do this song live, probably one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful songs I've ever heard:
