Please vote - Patriotsplanet future

It’s a shame we’ll lose some posting history.

With what’s going down now, what’s going to take place, and what’s threatened in the near future there will be some chunks of info missing. Especially in the Political.

Go with VB5. You're going to wind up there (or with one of its successor versions) eventually, anyway.
In my testing, I needed to upgrade to v4 before going to 5 anyway. But yes, php versions or security will eventually force it. Thank you for the feedback.

If it goes as planned, we will only lose whatever is posted here during the 12 hours or so it takes to build the new board. I will give warning so it is known. I will need to close the board once again for an hour or so to download the 2gb of posts, then anything posted after that while I upload that 2gb and build the new board won't be carried.

I voted for "Any of the VB options on patriotsplanet.net, I don't care which."

Really, though, whatever UT thinks is best.

I don't get the popups like others. I don't care about casino cash or rep; don't want to lose PM or posting history.
If you like, you can go to the vb4 link above and login and make sure your PMs are there. That was one thing I did not thoroughly check.

You're welcome.

Good luck with the upgrade. As a front-end developer, I know the fun/pain trade-off that comes from wrestling with HTML/CSS/Javascript and the various scripting languages and frameworks.

Thank you.

Yeah it was interesting trying to get the current version, the last generation, and the previous generation all installed and functional at once on the same server, with different php version requirements.

I realize updating to V5 or another platform would be more painful in ways, but I know in my job I would be fired for moving to an EOL platform. Now if course this isn't your job, but still moving to a platform with no support seems to be a questionable call

I guess I don't know what I'm going to vote for yet, you've done alot more research than I have in this.

... And seriously, thank you for all the time

Oh.

That’s nothing.

I thought we would be going back to the other day’s history - when you were first informing us and had done a bunch of work - I thought you had made the database copy then.

Carry on clown. Nothing to see here.

I did, but I figured its been long enough that I should do it again. There is a chance it fails as well.

I am firmly in the Know Nothing crowd and will gladly support whatever UT decides. Losing the Planet in toto would be a big loss, but The Clown has been at the helm ever since I showed up and I see no reason to Captain Queeg him.

Are you able to download pms on vb5? i couldn't quickly see a way.

I just spent a few minutes looking and could not find a way either. It appears to work exactly the same in vb4 as it does here.

Vb4 sounds good, but in UT we trust- whatever you feel is best is good for me

I'll vote for any option that involves banning limeys named after former cats. They bring nothing to the table.

I would also suggest deleting his post history, but keeping the others.

I hope that's unhelpful.

Now this is something I support. The other options are like watching an English movie without subtitles.

Thank you for all the wonderful feedback everyone. You can still vote, but the direction seems clear. All of the votes are to leave, and the majority like vb4 the best, and I think it works for now and down the road.

  • In order to upgrade to vb5, we have to go to vb4 first anyway.

In my testing this week of all the versions, I had some performance concerns with vb5, including receiving a "server is too busy, try again" message when I was the only one on.

vb4 appears to have more of the features we are used to than vb5, which appears to still be lacking some basic features.

vb4 is end of life, so by definition, there are security concerns, yet just last year, vb5 was exploited with the worst security flaw vb has ever had. They patched it, but those who weren't hacked were advised to close their boards entirely until a patch came out.

We can re-evaluate as we go and go to vb5 or change software entirely. A lot of vb4 boards went to Xenforo. Yes, our history can still be retained with different software. They supply an import tool.

So the plan as of now is to start early Friday morning. I will close .com for only an hour or two to re-download all the posts and threads so that we can be as current as possible. There is a chance this will fail, but we at least have what I already got. Once that is done, .com will be reopened while I work on the new site, but any posts made here then will not migrate.

I will post a new thread with the warning tomorrow, along with many of the steps I will be doing. I will edit that first post as Friday progresses so you can see where we are in the project.

Even though I already have an instance of vb4 installed, the post tables are not compatible for importing from here. So I will be updating the installation of vb3 at https://www.patriotsplanet.net/BB and then upgrading that to vb4, which is the URL that the new Patriots Planet will live going forward.

As part of this the front page of patriotsplanet.net will be overhauled and useful. If you have bookmarks, I ask that when we are ready you repoint them to https://www.patriotsplanet.net

If you are on mobile, try out the default mobile skin at http://www.patriotsplanet.net/vb4 please. It is what we will have for mobile interface at the start, and its better than I thought.

Thank you again to all and please pray I don't screw this up too badly.
