2023 NFL News

mahomes won't ask for more money due to that. he's a guy who understands team building. i have a ton of respect for him.
There is no way he sits through another season with Burrow making $10 mil more a year than him. My gut is he gets redone this offseason.

Mahomes just got a new deal from the Chiefs. Apparently they’re converting his salary to guaranteed money over the next four seasons. Not sure what this does to the cap for them but perhaps Chevs can shed some light?

Mahomes's deal is a model to work from, and was designed for renegotiations as often as each year. At a high level, its structure was such that each year the following year's salary becomes guaranteed, ensuring him security but not handcuffing the team. At the same time, since the team has an out every year to avoid a ton more guaranteed money hitting the cap, he's kind of perpetually in a contract year.

Look at the notes underneath the contract details. It was really well done:

If that was the case, then why did they just guarantee the next four years of his contract? Wouldn’t they have already been guaranteed year to year?

Hard to say without the details of the rework

All the details should be known in a couple of days. Why a new contract? Because he had fallen to 8th place on the QB pay scale.
The NFL hasn't been happy with the structure of Mahomes' last contract. 30 owners plus GB have yelled loudly at NFL headquarters for allowing the original contract to be approved. No contracts similar to it have been allowed since.
One thing we do know is that this new contract is actually a 3 year contract since both parties agreed to revisit/rework this new contract after the 2026 season.
