Greetings all,

One year ago, we made the decision to move the hosting for Patriots Planet to a dedicated server from the shared hosting environment we were on previously. And for the first time since we became independent from the fine folks at Chiefsplanet, we decided as a membership, that donations could help fund this very robust hosting, and carry the board in an ultra stable and top performing environment for the foreseeable future. The hosting I chose specializes in Xenforo hosting and is perhaps a bit more than we needed, but I wanted to ensure that our almost 3 million posts going back to 2002 were as protected as they could be.

The small membership (compared to the old days) that remains here answered the call, and I couldn't be more proud of how much help you provided. The hosting HAD to move, so I was facing a really significant expense and the donations helped to defray that immensely, and also allows us to minimize advertising on the site.

Since it is your money and your membership that keeps the board going, I thought I should be completely transparent with the financials. So often when you donate to a site like this, you have no idea about the expenses involved or if the host is making a profit and just pocketing the difference.

As you can see, many people donated in the first month of May 2024 as a yearly donation, and then cancelled their membership rather than paying month to month. That is why May 2024 is so much higher than the other months. Other members changed their donation amounts as time went on.

As far as expenses, that hosting expense is a few hundred dollars higher than it will be this year as there was overlap with the previous hosting to make sure we didn't lose any data. Further, the expenses include the costs for BSU. I would like to reduce those by moving that site to Xenforo and hosting it on the same host as Patriots Planet. If I do those two things, I will come much closer to breaking even assuming the donations are more or less the same. There were a few other expenses too that I didn't add here because I couldn't find them quickly, but things like paid addons on the board, which I know I did a few last year, like the new reaction system.

So there you have it. I am sure there could be some criticism of this, especially the hosting expense, but we made the decisions that we made and everything is explained in this thread. I wanted you all to know exactly how much your voluntary donations help and to be transparent with it, especially as we face so much loss from other mega platforms like Reddit and Facebook.

So to repeat what I said last year, if you would like to help keep the board alive, you can donate here:

Patriots Planet Patreon

They handle the billing. You just sign up, create whatever name you want, donate however much you want, change it however you want, and cancel whenever you want (non-refundable).

What do you get for being a Patron?

Nothing.

Except the satisfaction of helping to keep the board alive and another recurring monthly charge on your credit card next to Netflix.

I don't plan on putting any other content there and it is just a voluntary thing with no obligations either way. Donations do not confer any extra privileges here. Maybe after things settle I can make a little "supporter" banner to display on your profile here if you want, but that would be about it.

I took this on, so I will be paying for it either way, but thank you for sticking around and making Patriots Planet wonderful. I appreciate any help you are willing to give.

By default, Patreon is a monthly charge, but that doesn't mean if you decide to donate that you have to commit to paying something every month. I tried to fill out a bunch of different dollar values to be flexible with it. You can choose one you like, signup and pay, and then easily cancel the recurring charge if you just wanted to do a one time or yearly donation or the like. You can change how much you donate at will. There is no judgement for canceling and no worries if you need to. Patriots Planet has been our internet home for 22.5 years as of this writing, and has always been such a pleasure to come to and interact with all of you present or past. I appreciate any help you want to give, but never blame anyone who doesn't want to. It is strictly voluntary with no pressure from me as I kind of hate even making this post. The board is paid for and secure for many years to come and that was always my main goal. You guys are the best.

Thank you for all you do, UT. This corner of the internet is better with this site in place.

You don't have to answer this UT. It's really none of my business. I am curious as to the value of the site, if you should sell it. I have no idea. If you want to share that, fine. If you don't, that's fine too.
I have seen on other sites that ads are used more for non-paying members. Is that an option here? Quite frankly, you should be making a profit, with no apologies to anyone.

I have no idea of the value. The true answer is it is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. I've never looked into selling it as despite owning this domain we are on now and the hosting, I've never considered myself as The Owner. Because of the way the board started, I feel like I am just the current custodian. It's not my board, it belongs to the membership.

That ad thing with membership bypass may be an option, I've never looked into it, but I'm not sure how viable it is with the current levels of traffic.

Thanks for everything UT. I have a recurring monthly but when i get back from a short vacation will see if i can also do an additional one time donation while keeping the monthly.
Increasing membership without letting in the riff-raff (patsfan.com :-) ) is a challenge. I assume we go by word-of-mouth or someone stumbles across the place (me in 2005)

I haven’t had any Ukrainian bride or hot-moms ad banners recently :coffee:

Is there a way to increase traffic? Although there is a solid base here, there has been a noticeable decrease in posters over the past couple of years.
Maybe the end of the dynasty has something to do with it. I think that we always had an older group to begin with. I not getting any younger. I don't know about others.

Yeah it's been an issue for years and I think there are a bunch of contributing factors with no easy solutions. The existing active membership is older and I think younger fans tend to go to a place like Reddit which has a huge Patriots subreddit.

When I first built the larger membership up in the early to mid 2000s, after we already had a solid core, the landscape was a lot different. I think one of the most effective things I did back then was having cross promotion with a board for that week's rival.

There isn't a lot I can do actively any longer, I just don't have the time that I did then, and the strategies are so different. I mean, we should be okay with SEO, but these days you find people with social media more than search engines. So that is posting to Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, tick tok, etc... Some more appropriate than others.

People need a reason to come here and stay. It's not going to be the first place you get news. It's not going to offer exclusive stuff that the big social sites don't have.

So the draw needs to be the culture. Just like Vrabel is building in Foxboro now. The people that are here, want to be here, and stay here making it a place that new users want to come back to. We've had some issues with culture over the years, and I'm not the best moderator for it, but the members ultimately decide how to treat others. And that treatment goes a long way to retaining membership. I would prefer never having to ban or discourage anyone from joining and posting.

So that and letting others you talk to on other platforms know about it and making them want to be a part of a thriving and fun community.

I am not sure any message board will be what it was 20 years ago, but with effort, independent forums can still provide great community.

I'm from Ork, so I am actually getting younger. :coffee:

Social media siphoned off the bulk of message board posters - I was definitely one of them for a good, long while. And be careful what you wish for in terms of driving more traffic because it could result in nothing more than an influx of trolls.

I know a lot of the core group here are or were Patriots season ticket holders who have made a true investment in their love for the Patriots. While the overall participation may have dwindled from when I first joined, I don't feel as though the high caliber of knowledge has in the least. Wouldn't mind seeing an infusion of new blood but, personally, would rather it stay like this than be invaded by spam bots or trolls.

Have you considered adding an Ecom branch for extra revenue? The tariff BS is terrible timing for this, but if you sold exclusive merch here with unique options, you could help yourself out. Just a thought.

You already have some traffic coming here anyway…🤷‍♂️

Merchandise is kind of hard because we can't use Patriots or NFL trademarks. But I mean, there are small things we could do and Patreon even has an interface for it. I'm thinking like shirts or sweatshirts that are mostly text, but have meaning to those who know. Like the last one I thought of for something like that was a "Chapel Bill" themed thing. But you know what I mean. If the defense gets a nickname, there might be something you could do with text. "Squish the Fish" and "Berry the Bears" are examples as well.

I doubt there would be much draw to Patriots Planet themed coffee mugs and the like.

The trick is to make it themed to your forum. You can use the same colors and whatnot and not violate any copyright or trademark issues. You already know that though.

I was just looking at it from a business viewpoint. UT raised some things that might be contributing to the red bottom line.
I'm comfortable with the group we currently have. I do miss a few of our departed friends who can't be replaced.

Make black t-shirts with your clown logo. Those would be badass.

I don't know what I can add or do, but I did want to thank UT and all the donors for keeping this place alive.

To add revenue and value to a sports-themed fan forum, you’ll want to focus on three pillars: monetization, engagement, and differentiation. Here's a breakdown with actionable ideas:

💰 Revenue Ideas

1.

  • Offer ad-free experience, early content access, exclusive threads, or Q&As with influencers/athletes.
  • Add a badge or title to premium users for social proof.

2.

  • Promote sports gear, betting platforms (careful with T&Cs), tickets, or memorabilia.
  • Write product reviews or buying guides that include affiliate links.

3.

  • Sell banner space or sponsored threads to brands (local businesses, sports shops, fantasy apps).
  • Use Google AdSense or private ad deals with CPM/CPC models.

4.

  • Sell branded merchandise like T-shirts, hoodies, mugs with inside jokes or forum-specific themes.
  • Limited drops tied to sports events or big wins/losses to drive urgency.

5.

  • Add a “Support the Forum” feature (Patreon, Buy Me a Coffee, etc.).
  • Offer something simple in return—like access to a private lounge.

🔥 Value-Add Ideas

1.

  • Create real-time discussion spaces during games with polls, hot takes, and instant reactions.
  • Sticky these threads and promote them in advance.

2.

  • Host fantasy leagues for members.
  • Run pick’em challenges or bracket contests with small prizes.

3.

  • Partner with sports bloggers or analysts to post exclusive content.
  • Summarize key highlights, rumors, trades, etc., for busy fans.

4.

  • Leaderboards for top posters or prediction accuracy.
  • Badges for longevity, contribution, or funny comments.

5.

  • Ensure fast mobile UX—most fans browse forums during games or on the go.
  • Enable push or email alerts for hot threads or trending news.

🧠 Differentiation Tips

  • Niche down by sport, team, or region and become the place for those fans.
  • Lean into the community voice—inside jokes, memes, and culture give forums life.
  • Encourage and reward user-generated content (UGC) like match previews, vlogs, or opinion pieces.

Monthly merch sweepstakes are a killer way to drive recurring revenue, boost engagement, and make your forum feel like a VIP club. Here are some fun, high-impact sweepstakes you can sell access to—either as part of a paid membership, one-time entry, or as a bonus for merch buyers or donors.

🎁 Monthly Merch Sweepstakes Ideas

1.

  • Jerseys, balls, posters signed by popular players (use third-party authenticators).
  • “This month’s prize: Signed [Player Name] Jersey!”

💡 Tip: Reach out to memorabilia wholesalers or use eBay to secure items at a decent price.

2.

  • Includes team hoodie, cap, mug, sticker pack—all themed for that month’s focus (playoffs, rivalries, etc).
  • Bundle $100+ worth of merch for a $5-10 entry fee.

3.

  • Real: Two tickets to a local game.
  • Virtual: $100 DoorDash + $50 Fanatics gift card + forum “watch party” invite.

4.

  • Limited-edition hoodies, shirts, or hats only available to sweepstakes winners.
  • “Only 12 of these ever made. Win yours.”

5.

  • Winner gets to co-host a game day live thread with mods.
  • Custom title on the forum (e.g., “Fan of the Month”).
  • Free merch plus digital shoutouts across your socials/email list.

6.

  • Random box with fan gear, sports cards, stickers, snacks, and a bonus item (rare card or signed piece).
  • Add a “golden ticket” type prize for big hype.

💸 How to Sell It

  • Recurring Entry via Membership: “Join the $7/month tier and you’re automatically entered every month.”
  • Standalone Entry: “$5 per ticket, no limit. Winner announced on the 1st.”
  • Free with Purchase: “Buy any merch this month and get 1 sweepstakes entry.”

🔥 Bonus Twist

Offer a Leaderboard or Loyalty Multiplier:

“Every forum post = 1 entry. Every merch order = 10 entries. Every referral = 5 entries.”

Tip of the hat to you UT for posting this. You have no need to do it, nobody asked for it, but bravo for your transparency. Just a pity to see the financials for running the site in the red. We need more traffic here and more subs. I wonder how that can be done, some good suggestions on this thread already. I wonder can we get more foreign posters like myself and a couple of others. The Patriots have a huge fan base in UK, Ireland, Germany and Australia.

The posters we get from other teams (the good ones) are a big plus
We used to get more during game weeks and while some were trolls we kept some around.
We miss some who have disappeared- BOU, Jaric - and appreciate the ones still popping in.
We don’t have to just get Pats fans, we need nfl fans who are mature and not just here to start arguments

That's true. We've always great posters from other fan bases here. Always enjoyable to chat with them.

Yeah more European members would be fantastic as that is such a growing segment. Yeah there are some great ideas here, but I just don't have the time to do many of them on my own. If I did this full time, I could fully dive into the whole social media saturation, get writers, start a podcast, all of that, but that is a more than full time job on its own with no guarantee of it even working.

I just wanted to make sure that everyone who donated knew that the money was needed and appreciated so much in order to keep the board going. As I said, I am a caretaker now more or less, and I wanted the board to be in a place where it could stable and preserved. And away from the infection on .com. So that is accomplished and I am happy for that. So anything that anyone else can do to get more new members and get us growing again, even if its small, would be appreciated. Not necessarily for the money, but just for the community.
