...since I don't see a general thread.

Any news from the combine? I haven't really followed. Any surprises, rumors creeping out, etc.?

I don't follow college ball as there are just too many players to keep track of and they change in importance all the time, but I decided to watch the combine for the first time ever and got a kick out of watching these kids go all out to impress the coaches who will be making the draft choices. You know these guys have been targeting becoming a pro since their pony squads and knowing some of them will be the professional stars of tomorrow makes their efforts that much more entertaining to watch. As a fan only, and not a football professional brain, it was hard to spot the small differences between the players, but I enjoyed that they tested them by positional groups. Funny how many of them were termed "special teams prospects" by the announcers. I only hope whomever NE finally drafts will turn out to be something other than a JAG.

good to see you @oldbagfan
i love the combine.
I know it's just the underwear Olympics but I like the interviews and I like to watch the players interacting with each other and I also like listening to guys like Jeremiah and Charles Davis talking about the players because they really know their stuff. I like watching the drills 2. You can keep the 40s though... boring

"underwear Olympics" Funny. Is that original with you? I liked where they showed the current testee against previous clips of guys running the same distance, notably Mahomes (please not to mention that name). And do I understand that KC is considering not resigning him? . . . birdies . .

I just wanted to add that Special Teams is no small potatoes. We've had some spectacular ones. Here's a recent quote from BB about Matthew Slater:
“But the special teams coverage guys — and we’ve had a lot of them — back in the Giants, you know, with Reyna Thompson, and great returners like (Dave) Meggett and (Julian) Edelman and Troy Brown and all that. But as a core special teams player, Slater really is, I’d say, been the best of all time. I hope he gets recognized for that.”

Daddy Jackie was a stud, but son Matthew has done his dad more than proud. Never really cut it as a WR, but found his niche in ST and as I understand it, is still slated (npi) to keep playing in 2025.

Matthew Slater retired after the 2023 season.

He was a coach under Mayo last year, but I don't think he was retained by Vrabel.

More unneeded proof that the oldbag doesn't know everything (despite her assertions to Mr. OBF). Thx for the keerekshun. :thumb:

@oldbagfan
I wish I had been clever enough to call it the underwear Olympics but I have heard that term for years. I actually don't know who originated it.

Pretty sure it was the one & only Hawg
Well, whoever gets the credit as the inventor, it's a great phrase and is applicable to many "events." Like the Miss Victoria Secret competition. And the red carpet featuring many of today's "starlets" (and yes, Kim, I mean you). And how does the contestant on the far right fit into this group??

Matthew Golden put himself in the top half of the 1st with his combine.
For all the Xavier Restrepo lovers out there, not only didn't he run the 40, he didn't run the 3-cone or the 20-yd shuttle. To quote a recruiter from the program: "We all know he'll be lucky to run a 4.6 at the pro day'.

inb4 Hurr Durr Jerry Rice, who retired 20 years ago.

In all honesty, he would have been fine not running the 40. Not running the 3-cone should be a huge red flag for a slot receiver.

edit: Greg Cosell ranks the QBs.

1. Cam Ward - would fit in with the top QBs from last year's draft
2. Tyler Shough - Louisville. Prototypical tall QB with skill
3. Shedeur Sanders
4. Jalen Milroe

Shough might end up being a sleeper pick, like Ewers. Except Shough has a lot of in-game stuff that I like, tough, makes big throws in big spots, etc. Measurables aren't the best.

Howard Cosell died 30 years ago. But if anyone could speak from the grave about football and sound authoritative, it would be him.

The latest Athletic mock had

Armand Membou, OT, Missouri

to the Pats at #4. Know nothing about him, but a clear need area.
