The thing that still confounds me about that damn game is that I don't think Bill did a very good job.

The offense never really adjusted (until the last scoring drive, perhaps) to the fact that the Giants were getting crazy pressure on Brady. They didn't keep extra tight ends in to help block.

They didn't run Moss on slants until the last scoring drive.

The 4th and 13 call was something Herm Edwards or someone of his ilk would have done.

They left Hobbs by himself on the last TD.

The Pats had 2nd and short a number of times without getting first downs.

Yeah, a lot of the blame belongs to the guys on the field. FU Asante. FU Tyree for being so damn lucky.

But BB is the best coach on the planet, yet he made MANY mistakes or at least bizarre coaching moves in that game.

My only working theory is that he was knocked off his game by the SpyGate crapola. Thanks John Tomase (jtomase@bostonherald.com) and thanks Arlen Spector.

Am I wrong about BB having a bad game? Are there other explanations besides him being distracted? Is it just that the players did not execute?

I know that this is an old story but I discussed this today with a Giants fan who is a very good guy, and he was honestly wondering about some of these issues. I had no good answers.

I think it was a perfect storm. For the first time in the season, they all believed their own hype. Add all the new spygate crap and one hell of a focused Giants team and you have the hell that was the :cuss:Super Bowl.

That's what I say too! Some of them were trashing talkin' to the Giants inviting them to their post SB parade. Never a good sign. That's what the Bolts did and look where it got them.

Don't forget that Brady called out the Giants defense. As was pointed out when Anthony Smith opened his mouth, you just don't do that because it fires up the other team.

I do think that the pressure of Spygate, the undefeated season, the "best in history"... ended up being more than he could handle. In the biggest game in New England Patriots' history, the "best coach of all time" crumbled like Grady Little.

Count how many people blitzed on that TD and you will see why Hobbs was by himself.

OK, thanks to you assholes I looked at that TD for the first time ever on YouTube. That was a great defensive call. Before they showed the replay, I was confused as to how Burress blew by Hobbs, because Hobbs was positioned perfectly pre-snap, and the route was only 14 yards. Then I saw the replay. Ouch. I can't believe he bit on quite possibly the worst sold route I've ever seen. There was no doubt where he was going, ESPECIALLY SINCE WE WERE BLITZING AND HOBBS KNEW THAT! Ellis got punked when Plax came right at him and he was flatfooted for a second. Suddenly, jetsouttro...horror.

I like Hobbs. I think the kid is a baller. But, OUCH. That there hurt to watch.

I remember having similar feelings. They looked so vanilla on both sides of the ball in the first half, so I thought "BB's just doing a Jedi mind-trick and at halftime he's going to make adjustments that'll have the Giants unable to figure out which way is up."

Except it never happened.

It would make more sense if he had screwed up in his first Super Bowl and then won the next three. Instead he wins the first three and...

I don't know.

It's lonely at the top, and Bill Belichick was the "buck stops here" guy. I don't know if any of the other coaches could say the right things to make Belichick feel truly confortable at that SB. He was battling history, the Giants, a bit of overconfidence maybe. All the stuff everybody else said.

I could only wish the Pats had Romeo Crennel or Charlie Weis on that sideline to work with Belichick during that particular game. Maybe, just maybe, this Dom Capers guy may be good luck....

And poor Ellis Hobbs on that play. Tell you what though, he did return that kickoff 108 yards in the opening game!!!

I do not blame any one person. BB takes a lot of the blame, that is so hard to say as he has been unflappable for so long here. He may have been outcoached for the first time in a Pats uniform (hoodie and it was red...) But Assante makes the catch, the def brings down ELi, Tyree does not amke the circus catch, Ellis does not fall for Jedi Mind trick...well it all did happen and they lost. Iam still sitting here blogging about my team, wearing my AFC champs hat and thinking about the next move in FA and looking forward to the draft...aren't most of you doing the same?

Yup. I pass blame on no one person. It was a team effort getting there and they went down as a team. Any one of two dozen or so players could've stepped up and been the difference.

I still get really ill when I have to think about this. Next thread.

There was a Super Bowl this year?

Can't remember it...I increased my doses of medication after Feb. 3 for some reason. Ever heard of it?
