AJ Brown

Now that they've secured Brown, since Diggs's legal troubles are behind him it's time to give him a call. Diggs loved it here. Brown, Diggs, and Doubs, with Mack Hollins, Pop Douglas, and Kyle Williams... That would be a nice lineup, even if Boutte doesn't return.

How nice is it to be able to have these discussions (not you rivshark)? Debating whether or not to acquire a top 6WR that might put us back in the Super Bowl. Once again, I'll remind you that I live in Metro Detroit and these discussions aren't happening here.

We really are spoiled rotten, lol.

For the Patriots, that wide receiver room is f*cking ridiculous!

I wouldn't hate signing Diggs, but I would take it as a bad longer term sign for the team, a total lack of faith in Kyle Williams, because you'd be absolutely burying him on the depth chart. Very hard to develop him from that deep.

Last year:

Stefon Diggs: 85 receptions, 1013 yards.
Kyle Williams: 10 receptions, 209 yards.

I don't give two shits if he's buried on the depth chart. If they can bring Diggs back, Kyle WIlliams can keep the Gatorade bucket filled and cold.

Kyle was learning every position, it’s a complicated offense, he did need to gain some strength…… I’m still pretty bullish he can be an incredible number two or three option. He’s not a number one, but you get 3 guys like him and you’re fine. The Pats won a ton of SBs with that strategy.
Never got one with a true one they were forcing targets to.

I don't think they'll be forcing targets to Brown. No more than they did with Diggs a year ago.

Paraphrasing and truncating Mike Reiss,

I was an over pay but better than an under pay.
After watching last week’s practices, the WR room looked weak.
It had to be done.

There were no other teams in on the trade but that could change any time in the near future, say if the Chargers wanted in after their mini camp.

Per YT video

A 2028 1st is equivalent to a 2027 2nd. He's worth all of that. I couldn't care less about the 5th thrown in.
He's a great fit with 37 1st down catches with his QB under duress. No receiver currently playing has more than that. In addition, Brown is one of only 7 players to have 8500 yds and
60 TDs in his first 7 seasons. The others are Moss, Tyreek Hill, Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Marvin Harrison and Jerry Rice. Good company.
Combine him and Doubs and this promises to be the best receiving duo the Pats have had since Moss and Welker, 19 years ago.

As of now, the Patriots owe Brown $1.3 million in salary for 2026 and have until the day before their first regular-season game to decide on his $27.45 million option bonus. He also had a $250,000 workout bonus if he participated in at least 80% of his team's offseason workouts. He hasn't been participating in those in Philadelphia, so he has already forfeited the $250,000.

If the Patriots pick up the option bonus, they can spread the cap hit on that $27.45 million out evenly over the next five years. Since one-fifth of $27.45 million is $5.49 million, he'd have a cap charge this year for New England of $6.79 million (the bonus proration plus the $1.3 million salary). If the Patriots do not pick up the option, that $27.45 million converts to salary, meaning they'd be assessed $28.75 million against this year's cap. Presumably, they'll pick up the option, but if they have the cap room this year and want to limit future dead money as a result of bonus proration, they can decline the option and take the whole hit now. The Pats have a decision to make on the cap hit and that could be a good thing if Gonzo is signed for a big money extension in the mid to high $30M/ range.

Presently, the Pats have about $40M in cap space per Miguel.

His option bonus for 2027 is about $10M. Again, the Pats can spread it out or take it all in '27. It's their choice and that's a great position to be in. More than likely, his contract for '28 and
'29 will be adjusted since he'll only have $4M guaranteed for '27 and nothing guaranteed for '28. Roseman negotiated a good team friendly contract which the Patriots have now inherited.

GO PATRIOTS!

** This is essentially a 2 yr/$50M deal if the Patriots want to end it after 2 years.
