AJ Brown

I listened to a segment and they went full rivshark on the trade.

Bill Barnwell goes the other way. He thinks Brown will flourish under Josh McDaniels' offense since McD is a big believer in PA passes with the QB under center. Brown was great on PA passes on Vrabel's Titans with Ryan Tannehill at QB, which is why Roseman traded them a 1st rounder for him in 2022. PA passes is something Jalen Hurts has never done with the Eagles.
Barnwell also thinks McD will move Brown around to keep defenses on their heels not knowing who is defending him one play to the next, something the Eagles rarely did.

Well….. he’s better than a guy like strange, or Harry, or Easley, or Brown, or Wynn, or Sony……. Or having the league take the pick away for whatever reason…….

But ideally you draft a stud and sign him to a second contract.
I’d be thrilled if we got the kind of production out of Brown that Sony Michele had. Michel’s career here was short but productive. We don’t get to or win LIII without him.
I don’t cast him on the same shit heap as Harry, Easley, etc.

So I think it's impossible to assess whether this was an overpay. On one hand, in almost every case when a deal goes through, it's true that no one else was willing to pay that much for the asset. That's why the deal went through.

But here it's more complex. Brown had expressed specific feelings not only about not staying with the Eagles, but about going specifically to Vrabel and to the Patriots. A player who has a reputation specifically for being a different guy when he's engaged vs when he's just "being a professional." So I would argue that he's actually more valuable to the Patriots than he would be to another team in an identical situation.

I don't think Brown was going anywhere else. I think the Patriots had all the leverage, so shouldn't have had to pay anything beyond the 1st, and arguably should have paid less than that. On the other hand, I think his value to the Patriots is basically in line with that.

As a broader point, if you believe that AJ Brown makes the team better, and that giving up a 2028 1 for him makes the team better, and you really believe that, I have a difficult time seeing the scenario in which your confidence level in that is so low that you're against throwing in a 5th to make it happen.

I’m not always negative. I loved this year’s draft. Loved it.

Hey if you like trading a first for 1 and 1/2 to two years of a WR who’s right now NOT a top ten guy……… more power to you.

There is credit to the argument that the Pats have blown so many drafts that it is better to trade for a known commodity, even if it’s a short term play.
You guys are all forgetting that for trading draft picks, next year's first first round pick is equivalent to this year's second. If we're paying a 2028 first, you're thinking a third in this past draft. We get to use Brown for two years before we have to pay the price.

In PFF's top 100 WRs , Brown is #12. There only two (!) Pats wrs in the top 100 are Boubs (48) and Boutte (78). Boutte will likely be traded now so the equivalent 3rd round pick will be quite a replacement jump. I think you are exaggerating Brown's short availability span. He's missed very few games in his career. And FWIW, 11 of those top 100 are currently 30 years old or older.

To your first point: All we can go by is the original asking price and then what we actually paid. Had we really played hardball and managed to squeeze them down to a second rounder we don't know if another team would have got involved at the lower price.

We do know no one else was willing to give the first and 5th. I do agree given everything involved in this mess I had hoped we'd do better but if you strip the mess away and just go off a generic player x of his caliber the price seems fair and if us stepping up to pay it ensured no one else got involved and ensured we got him than that is what it is.

It’s being reported that the Rams were out once they saw his medicals.

But look at the Super Bowl wins.

WR is the single most overvalued position in football.
Here is the biggest issue with using that excuse: we’re not getting the same production from these WRs. Take away Brown - who can you count on to make those big first-down catches with the game on the line? Is your hatred of that position. More important then getting #1 target for Maye
