Baron's Book Club...est January 1, 2023.

Lars Kepler have writen 10 books, I have read only 9 on account of I'm too scared to read the last one yet

start w/ Larsson as The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series he wrote is tamer than Kepler :)

Kepler it is, then.

If one believes in fate or karma, I've actually been hashing out ideas recently about stories that combine the supernatural, fear, and lustful fantasies in a framework of a series of short stories, but all linked into an overall narrative (Think Fantasy Island meets 50 Shades of Grey meets HP Lovecraft). I've been researching lore and mythology from other cultures to comb it for inspiration (which I found), but I had no idea of this Nordic Noire....seems like just the sort of thing I was looking for.

See....I distinctly remember seeing two Mickey Rourke movies, 9 1/2 Weeks, and Angelheart, that made quite an impression on me, particularly Angelheart. What a vastly underrated movie it is.

Then years back, the book 50 Shades of Grey came out, and it was all the rage. I read it just to figure out what it was that the women were all in a tizzy over it....still working on that part, because the story was predictable and dull, the writing was absolutely abysmal, and the protagonist was excruciatingly annoying, I didn't even like her. ("Take your 'Inner Goddess" and GFY)

I then went into a rabbit hole of these dark romance novels...and came to the conclusion that they're all the same....mediocre plots, bad writing, all first person, and half the book you spend in the head of the protagonist dealing with her doubts and insecurities, which is obviously of some value to female readers, but for men is torture!

I think there is room in the world for good stories, written well in third person, that brings edgy erotic content wrapped in suspense an fear. I just need to get my ideas organized and find some women test subjects to give feedback when I get to writing, but that's a ways down the road.

Anyway, much ado about nothing, but you see why this notion of Nordic Noire piques my interest.

and Jo Nesbo.

BTW, I did get to see the series Masters of the Air. The series was only based on part of the book. They did take the name of the book, which is decieving in a way.
However, the series was based on several books.
It was not as good as Band of Brothers, I did read that book by Ambrose.Or the Pacific, which was excellent and based on two or 3 books.
But, Masters of the Air the series was worth a watch if you get to see it. As I stated before, Masters of the Air the book, was excellent.

Just found out about this, moves immediately to the top of my list...

Reading The Hypnotist...not that far into it, but I gotta say, it has Lovecraftian vibes so far.

OK, I have been ddelving into things like noir and dark erotica, and let me tell you....it was more pain and less pleasure. The plots are shallow, and the characters are cardboard, for 99% of it. It's depressing.

I want to take the whole damned lot in a pile and burn it.

So, I decided to write my own novel, first in a trilogy. I have only begun, chapter 5 of a 35 chapter first novel, a long way to go, but I have it all plotted out. The narrative will be third person. Except for the prologue where the primary introduces herself to the reader. I will post it below, to give a flavor profile of my novels.

I'm excited to be writing, though it is at some cost, my neuropathy is severe at the moment, my left hand is almost palsy...I can't even squeeze toothpaste out of the tube right now, but I'm pressing on.

The genre will be "Dark Erotic Fantasy", highly explicit, but with an actual story that is hopefully compelling enough to stand on it's own. Target audience is millennial and gen x women...women with families and responsibilities, who may read romance or erotica but getting tired of 24 year old naive women meeting handsome mountain men, bad boy bikers, or filthy rich CEO's of financial empires. My stories are about immortals, and real people in the real world.

The romance and erotica genre is bleeding, begging for quality. There is no reason that this kind of literature has to suck.

As I said, I want to burn this industry of trash to the ground, and this is my flamethrower.

Anyway, may I present the prologue, if it pleases you;

Prologue

You feel me already.

That slow, silken warmth tracing down your spine. The scent of crushed jasmine and warm skin in the dark. A pulse between your thighs you try to ignore. I am Azubeth, last daughter of Lilith, last of the Lilim. And I have been watching you.

I was born where a man’s vows evaporate like morning dew under a blazing sun, spilling his sinful seed into my mother’s womb, as all Lilim are.

I hunt where mortal longings flow like ghostly fish in black water. When the scent calls me, I step through the veil and become Beth.

My eyes see your dreams.
My tongue tastes your forbidden truth.
My voice echoes through your mind.
My touch dissolves every lie you tell yourself.

I will burn away the web woven of self-deceit, and show you your true self.
I will reveal to you there is no good or evil, only pain and pleasure, truth and lies.

In these pages you will behold an immortal, forbidden love in a maelstrom of flame that cost one her body, the other his soul. Vanilla and desert fire, jasmine and desire. A djinn’s laughter like warm smoke. A fae scream as she burns. Gardens where I was once young enough to fall in love. The war that took everything.

I will show you a mother’s pain and her pleasure. The wall between them is only smoke and lies.

You are holding the first thread.

Your flower hides in the light. Take my hand, come with me into the shadows, into the dark, and watch as your flower blooms.

I already taste how much you want to.

If you catch the scent of jasmine and vanilla as you read, know that you are not alone.

Come closer, little lamb.

Let me show you what the wolf dreams of when she closes her eyes.

I am Azubeth.

I hunger.

And you... you desire to be devoured.
