Totally, 100% agree with that. It's sad. I started supporting the Pats when on a family holiday to Cape Cod in 1984. We were in the region and I decided they were my team. Even during the bad years, I had more enthusiasm for them than I have now. Im finding it really difficult at the moment to raise enthusiasm for them. And it's not just because they stink. Kraft has played a huge role in this. The way he handled Bill's departure, the sneaky comments, the hit job of the Dynasty, learning that he routinely mocked Bill to all his guests in the owners box when Bill was HC, the cheapness, the silly reasons for picking Mayo, the hurt ego because he felt he wasn't getting enough praise etc etc. And the majority of Patriots reporters who hated Bill and delighted in him going and who now refuse to call Mayo out now, are another reason.Shit, I'm probably going to watch the Fenway Bowl today just to start getting more acquainted with the Tar Heels, even though the team will likely look much different next year. 11am on ESPN.
On a more general note, I think a lot of us have become more cynical about the NFL over the years for many reasons. There is a lot of corruption, and I am sure there is in college ball too, with the potential for more now with NIL. But without the commissioner and his cronies, it will be different. The introduction of the NFL embracing gambling is sure to make it worse. With the hack job that Kraft did on BB, I am far less passionate about the Patriots than I was before, and I doubt that same level will ever return now. I will of course still watch, but after that 20 year run with 6 superbowl wins when I wasn't sure that they would ever get any, none of it bothers me much now.
The Krafts may eventually learn how they erred, likely under Jonathon, but I won't hold my breath.
In the mean time, I am going to enjoy watching BB bring his GOATness and experience to college and see how he builds a pro program there. It should be fun to watch.
On a wider level, the NFL is indeed going down a path I don't like. I've added my thoughts about the gambling and how dangerous it is from seeing the way it's prevalent over here, the silly international games, the dictatorial control of the commissioner etc etc and the corrupt, downright nasty owners.
College ball is more fragmented, and that's a good thing. Different conferences, different people in charge etc. And I really love the genuine enthusiasm and support the fans give the college teams, the way fans plan their autumns around their team's schedule etc. I saw the insane fandom when I went to college games here, and I love it and admire it.
Still, the NFL is a giant. For all LeBron and Curry talking about their game the other night, the NFL was still drawing in 5 times the viewers that game did. So it's not going anywhere yet, but maybe a slow decline is underway.
