Valued at $2.6 billion by Forbes recently, the New England Patriots clock in as the second most valuable NFL franchise, and the sixth most valuable team in all of sports. Current owner Robert Kraft paid $172 million for the team in 1994, paving the way for a storied dynasty and an astonishing return on investment.

One fellow billionaire who didn't think the Pats offered much in the way of ROI: the Donald.

According to a recent report, the Boston Globe suggests that Donald Trump seriously considered buying the Patriots in 1988 from then owner Billy Sullivan for approximately $85 million. However, sources claim that Trump and his advisors weighed the debt the team and its stadium were carrying at the time ($104 million) and decided against the transaction.

We trust that the one-time Apprentice posterboy and current GOP hopeful has "fired" everyone responsible for passing on such a prized investment.

Even assuming that Trump would have tried, it's highly suspect that the owners at that time would have allowed the sale to go through, especially since it was basically Trump that sued the NFL on behalf of the USFL.

"Decided against the transaction" in Trumpspeak = "Didn't have the money"

a.k.a. How someone supposedly worth $10 billion couldn't afford to buy the Bills last year.

Kraft bought Sullivan Stadium in '88. If Kraft already owned the stadium when Trump was interested, then that would be the most likely reason why Trump didn't follow through. Kraft correctly knew that the owner of the stadium had the real leverage with the franchise. It proved to be the reason why he was able to block Orthwein from moving the team to St. Louis in '94 and Orthwein was instead forced to sell to Kraft.

Oh, and Trump would not have been welcomed into the club of 30 (at the time) due to the reason pointed out by Darth.

Just think we could have been playing at trump stadium at trump place.

This is a pretty old story actually. Trump has a failing memory about it though. He had just bought the Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City from Merv Griffin which used up capital and gave him huge debt. By '89 he couldn't make the loan payments and that put the Taj Mahal into bankruptcy. There's no way he could have bought the Patriots.

FWIW does the voting public forget that this "brilliant businessman" has sought bankruptcy protection 3 or 4 times?

...and there are people who want him to run the country

Lest we turn this into a political thread, we must'nt forget what happened the last time the U.S. elected a "businessman" as President #Hoover

Trump went bankrupt numerous times...he isn't too savvy on most of his investments. He has many connections and friends in the right places though...one of his "trump cards".

Trump gets to land his helicopter on the Patriots practice field

Trump gets to sit in the owners box

Trump doesn't have to deal with players, contracts, Goodell, the media, the other owners, stadium issues, the Town of Foxoborough, the State of Massachusetts, etc. etc.

Looks like Trump got the best of the deal
