If Gonzo wants to be the highest paid CB, will the Patriots give him that 2nd contract?

The highest right now is $31M/ being paid to Trent McDuffie, Rams.

Carlton Davis is being paid $18M by the Patriots. OTC says he played more like an $11M/year player in 2025

OverTheCap values Gonzo's 2025 season at $9.3M/

Can Gonzo legitimately ask for a contract in the $30M/year range?

I say yes, if he plays like he did in the SB. The Patriots have every right to argue he wasn't that good on average in 2025. OTC would agree with that argument. Buckle up for protracted contract talks.

He's proven to be a top CB, and Pats have the cap space for it. I say pay the man.

My only concern is his health as he has only finished one full season in his short NFL career.

Other than that he looks every bit as worth the big contract by performance.

Gonzo has missed a total of 17 games due to injuries in his 3 year NFL career. That's a full year of games.
This includes 13 games for a torn labrum, 3 games for a hamstring strain, and 1 game for a concussion.
His value changes based on that injury history. It has to be part of the negotiations.

For sure. It has to be a way to bring down the price, although if he walks from the Pats another team will pay him top market CB money without hesitation.

CBs often have one or two outstanding seasons then go to the top end of the middle of the pack.

I’m fine either way. It’s a great position for the Pats. If he gets a 4 year deal in his prime…. Fine. If they trade him to a sh** team and the Pats get an extra top ten 2027 first round pick and another first in 28……. That sounds pretty good too, and that’s the going rate for top defenders.

He’s great, but the bills spread it around….. does he help winning the division? Yes, of course, but most top AFC teams spread the ball around a lot.
 
We picked up his 5th year option. So we have him through the next 2 seasons. If it makes sense cap wise, we should sign him to a long term deal.
However, if we can't sign him for a reasonable contract after this season, then we should look to trade him for a 1st and possibly more.

What if Washington….. who, with all the stud WRs in that division could really use him. But what if they offered a 27 first, 3rd, and a 28 first?
If sauce went for 2 firsts that seems like fair value. Gonzo may command more.
I could see Daniels getting injured and Washington finishing DFL in that division. That could easily be a top 10 pick.

So if Gonzo wants to sign as a Pat, great. But the Patriots have real leverage and are in a great position.
 
One thing to keep in mind is that Drake will need to be signed to a longnterm deal within the next couple of years.
How much cap space can we use on 2 players before it effects the mid level players who make up the guts of the team??

2 years, 3 at the most. That's why it's a window. After that, you're the Bills/Chiefs/Ravens/Chargers taking spins at the roulette wheel every year and hope your QB doesn't hit 30 and start regressing.

Sauce is also getting paid already while Gonzo is not. I'd argue he's worth more than two 1st rounders in a trade given the relatively low commitment any team receiving him would also have to endure on his salary until they re-sign him.

But I think trading your best young player on an ascending team is outrageous. The cap has increased substantially over the past 4 years and that is likely to continue. The sooner you sign him, the sooner that figure will look like a bargain. If you wait 1-2 years, that $35 mil per year asking price will only go up as the market resets if he continues to excel at a high level.

Then another first in 28, plus a second in either year…….. I agree he’s probably worth more than 2 firsts.

But if he misses training camp, F**** that. How many guy do we see skip TC and get injured.
Revis, Bell, Brandon A, Terry McLaurin….. There are exceptions like Gonzo, and James Cook, but holdouts rarely work for the team that ends up signing the guy after he holds out.

He was at mini-camp. He's shown no indication that he's going to hold out.
