I don't get it. They've been considered cheap for over 20 years, why would this be a hit to a rep they already have? If they actually sign him to a real deal, that's they only thing I see affecting their rep. Seymour, Branch, Mankins, Samuel, etc. etc..

Sounds like an exquisitely run business to me.

It doesn't mean I don't want them to sign him. It means I understand why they are difficult negotiators.

The NFL set this up in the last cba by making traditional holdouts obsolete. He tried to do right by not holding in like others do yet here we are 1 week away and still no deal. (I know he had a week or so there with "injury" but not the same as the other hold ins)

No one waits past 3 years if they are worth anything. We still trying to act like Bill is still here and can make anything work with anyone so long as Brady was in place. Vrabel's great but still got to pay to play.

Because you can't just blame everything on Bill Belichick anymore at that point.
At that point, it really is Kraft.
 
What did Seymour do after he left? Not much. Branch was a bust when he left and came back, Samuel was trouble, I can’t remember the trajectory of Mankins career.
Then the pats had a decade where they didn’t draft anyone worth retaining. They have spent heavily in FA…..
Gonzo has a good offer in front of him. That’s not in dispute. He does not play the run that well, and is often banged up.
What more do you want?
And it’s debatable if CB is a position you even want to be paying top money for.

They also did give out second contracts to Gronk, Hernandez (oops), Dmac, Hightower, and Jules off the top of my head.

The Patriots re-signed Richard Seymour at about the same stage of his career and traded him when he was 29.

Pretty sure a 25 year-old Christian Gonzalez would promptly shove it up the Patriots ass if he walks. When he is 29 or 30? Different story.

He's signed through 2027 and the Patriots can tag him in 2028.

I agree with this. What players deserved rich second contracts, and/or went on to prove elsewhere they deserved them? None are coming to mind.
