So...I think ND may be overmatched this time.
I felt confident against Indinia, hesitant but okay against Georgia, and pretty good against PSU. But LT Knapp going down in the last game may be the final nail for this squad. That's the fourth starting OL to go down for the season, and it's at left tackle. They're not even sure if it will be Baker or Jagusah at LT for the game. On the DL, the only starter left is Howard Cross. Credit to the OL and DL coaches for keeping them rolling, but it's a lot. Baker was clearly overmatched against PSU, giving up 5 hurries and a sack in a partial game.
Similarly, Morrison is the one DB they could possibly man up against Jeremiah Smith. He's out, and ND relies a lot on man coverage. They can't pull men out of the box with Henderson running the ball, especially with the DL ailing as badly as it is. A big question will be how ND uses S Watts. If they have to have him key on supporting the run, he's less available to be a backstop (and loses his INT potential) against Smith & Co.
Leonard will need to show great judgement on when to move in the pocket, and when to stand and deliver the ball. Kid is a gamer for sure, but isn't going to out skill an OSU squad. The WR to watch isn't Greathouse or Collins. Watch #6 Jordan Faison. Along with TE Mitch Evans, he's a great release valve underneath. Think 2007 Welker.
But I think this game is decided on the lines, and while my heart believes (and all of me wants to see the Planet's own OSU melt down in the event of an OSU loss) my head says this one is too much. Put the Michigan loss aside, and OSU should have been the favorite to win it all from wire to wire this year. They have talent to spare, and have been playing absolute lights out.
...But that's why they play the games.
