They ran nothing but vanilla soft serve on both sides of the ball. Whether it was by design or necessity, it's what they did.

They went vanilla by necessity. That's what happens when your top 20 receiving options are hurt, your OL is banged up, and your two best defensive players are out of the game.

The idea that Belichick purposefully threw the game for some grand long term scheme is just idiotic and completely baseless and flies in the face of everything Belichick has ever said his entire Patriots career. There is nothing to indicate he would ever consider that and a thousands of examples to show how that would directly contradict everything else we know about his coaching philosophies.
