Dion Lewis Re-Signed/Extended

Great deal for the Patriots side. A bit surprised Lewis didn't wait until this offseason. He gets some job security but I think he would have gotten a lot more on the open market even if he played this well for another 5 games and then got hurt for the rest of the year. He's shown to be a high end pass catching back.

IMO he's clearly better than Vereen who was never particularly good at anything and had a ton of concentration drops. Patriots sure did get bailed out by this guy given how mediocre/awful the other guys have looked.

Vereen sure looked good in the SuperBowl... Let's not make it seem like he sucked, he didn't suck. It was a money thing, that's all. He'd still be here for 1.8 million per

Vereen didn't suck, but surely you aren't implying he could run between the tackles better than Lewis or that his first year was better than Lewis's first year, or even that his current year is better than Lewis's current year.

Vereen was awesome in the Superbowl but I think Lewis is playing better.

I just hope he doesn't have a change of heart next year or the year after if he outplays this contract, which he very well might.

I loved Vereen, but Lewis has been even better. No two ways around it. He's faster and much more elusive than any back they've had in some time.

Exactly. Vereen never really developed. His pass blocking was always mediocre, he never was very fast or explosive, rarely made people miss, frequently dropped Brady dimes on those wheel routes, and couldn't run between the tackles.

Lewis so far has already shown to be better at making people miss, catches down field, and running between the tackles. Vereen was probably better in pass protection but Lewis looks better at everything else so far.

This is a really good move. He's a productive guy.

BB loves Dion Lewis.

"Off the field, Dion has been great. He had a really good offseason for us, works hard, is a well-conditioned player, trains hard, he's strong, and he does a very good job of really knowing [things]. The volume we have on offense is extensive," Belichick said Friday.
"He’s done a good job of learning all the running back stuff, but [also] extended plays, empty plays, things like that where he’s playing out of the backfield. ... He’s learned a lot of different spots, a lot of different adjustments – all the different blitz pickups and so forth in the passing game – so he’s picked things up well. He works hard. He’s tough. He’s here every day. Very coachable, just really tries to do what you ask him to do, whatever it is he doesn’t ask any questions, he just works hard to get it right. You love to coach guys like that."
Belichick added that Lewis' value extends to kickoff returns when needed. What has endeared him to Patriots fans quickly on offense is his ability to stop and start suddenly.
"He’s got good short-area quickness, good change of direction," Belichick said. "I think for his size [5-foot-8, 195 pounds], he’s got good power. He’s never going to be a 240-pound power back, but for his size he’s got good explosiveness. You see him put his shoulder down and pick up a couple extra yards or run through those light tackles, as well as his ability to make guys miss in space and change direction.
"He’s got a number of ways he can get extra yards and his ability to catch the ball, his ability to run inside and outside gives you a lot of options with a guy like that in the game. He makes the most out of what he’s got. He’s got a good skill set. It’s not the same as other guys, but he can make his work and he’s done it on a number of different levels – first down, second down, third down, running game, passing game, inside, outside, kick returns. He’s got a lot to work with there."

Looks like Bb made the right move. Not resigning vereen . Lewis can run & catch the ball. He has the best Jump cut on the team.

When we are all sitting around talking about how great BB "was", this may very well be one of the examples we site.....

If the Patriots could have had Vereen for 2 years / $4.4 Million, which is what they are paying Lewis, I would have liked that deal.

Not happening he got his pay day with the Giants . 3 years 12.35 mill contract . He having a decent season so far in NY. Vereen was nothing more then a receiving RB or used on draws. Lewis is being used right now as the #1RB.

All true, but I think you're missing my point.

I agree that Lewis looks like a better option than Vereen right now for the money.

But, leaving out the difference in salary, is Lewis a better RB than Vereen in general, or even a better fit for the 2015 Patriots than Vereen would have been, had he stayed?

Ask me that question after Lewis plays in, and helps the Patriots win a Super Bowl.

No offense I think the offense is better with Lewis then vereen. He does give the threat of running the ball . With that sick jump cut . Where vereen got most of his carries on draw plays .Both are good at catching the ball. Last year was the first time he didn't miss multiple games with injuries.

No offense taken.

I hope you're right about Lewis.

I'm just waiting to see how he responds to the fact that he is now officially on the radars of opposing Defensive Coordinators.

There is no question that Vereen had a monster Super Bowl last year but otherwise he was just a cog in the offense. He had 5 TDs last year and 838 total yards from scrimmage. Lewis this year has 2 TDs and 325 yards from scrimmage after only 3 games.
