FYI: After-Life

I'll go against the grain here. I'm not a huge fan of this show.

I'm a big Ricky Gervais fan, my wife and I were at this stand-up show in Dublin on Nov 22nd and it was excellent. And I loved the Office and Extras. But I feel, starting with 'Derek', Gervais is taking the easy way out and going for cheap schmaltz. He's become a master of playing with the audience's emotions in particular going for the cheap tear-jerker moments. I think he's better than that. The Office nor Extras went for these cheap moments as the comedy was so sharp and pointed, schmaltz wasn't needed and wouldn't have fit.

And I noticed in After Life, he is re-hashing an awful lot of jokes and skits he did in his earlier stand-ups that I saw. I suspect that he does his best work when Steve Merchant is writing with him.

That's just my opinion, I know the show has a huge fanbase.
