Home v Miami pregame

I think this defense was constructed with Miami firmly in mind.
  • Get pressure with 4? Check.
  • Support pass coverage with hybrid safeties as LBs? Check.
  • Ability to confuse initial reads with nearly every DB able to play multiple roles? Check.

1-2 of Peppers/Mapu/Dugger will play LBs alongside Bentley or Tavai on most snaps. This will help in pass coverage, and with Miami 's speed backs.
Mills/Dugger/Phillips, and maybe some Marcus Jones as deep safeties. Significantly more snaps for Mills this week.
Jon and Marcus countering Miami WRs speed and twitchiness at corner, along with Gonzalez.

There will be constant motion until the snap to confuse Tua's presnap reads and cause hesitation. Communication will be key on the handoffs through the various matchup zones. Probably somewhat less post-snap shifting, because the speed of the WRs can too easily take advantage of the fractional seconds of being out of position, and Tua is good at taking advantage early in the play.

IMO, if the Pats D is able to slow down/stuff this offense then the sky is the limit on them becoming one of the top units in the league, obviously assuming health.

This offense is very good, and definitely dangerous. That said, they haven't exactly put up huge numbers against the Patriots defense in the recent past. They're getting a lot of hype because they hung a big number on the Chargers, and the Chargers have these big names on defense. But realistically, the Chargers defense has been pretty terrible compared to their personnel, and their scheme was total trash. They played a lot of straight man, with JCJ and his gimpy leg covering OMGTEHCHEETAH.

I think Tua has progressed a lot as a QB starting last year which makes them dangerous. Their HC is legit and they are all bought in. I think this is the toughest group of skill guys we face all year. Now their Oline is not good so that may be the achilles and be the reason why we keep them down. But still, I think this is big spot for us coming off a loss and them coming off a win and traveling cross country. Sunday night, divisional game, a QB we have never beaten, this is BIG for us to show up and show out. I feel good about the spot just wish we didn't have so many injuries.

Look, Miami is in my top tier with the Chiefs, Eagles, and 9ers. I think they're real for the time being. But Tua's Dolphins haven't put up 20 points on the Patriots' defense since Mac got here.

Their total silliness on defense in week 1 leads me to believe that the Patriots will be able to put up a solid number of points. They don't have the personnel you'd typically want for a Fangio defense, and they're scrambling to learn their rules, fits, etc. It will take some time.

It's a good test, and hopefully an opportunity to show the league how to handle the new wrinkles that McDaniel added over the summer. I tend to think McDaniel is going to be a solid coach, but that's far from settled. Many coaches have had systems that go around the league once or twice until they're solved. If the system stops working, the buy-in gets shaky.

Miami looks great on paper but the Chargers ran for over 200 yds on them. With a ton of luck getting our O Linemen back we can break some runs like Minn. did.

None have been ruled out yet

Does anyone have any theories as to why it's so quiet around the Planet the week of a huge game against Miami?

It sure hits me as eerie.

Onwenu, Strange, and Jones will play. Less sure about Parker. Brown and Sow are out.

No inside information, it was just revealed to me an a bizarre vision as I woke from a deep sleep.

Not sure what they were thinking trying to go man for the most part against Hill. The Pats won't do that but Hill will still make his fair share of plays. I think this will come down to two things, can Mac and the offense keep it close, and who makes the one critical mistake. I think one turnover either way is going to end up being the difference.
