Is there a game today? Paranoid Patriot told me this has to be the game thread and to add [Patriots vs 49ers 9/29/24 4PM on Fox].

Unlike 2001?

There was one difference in 2001, of course. A brilliant coach attracted a bunch of his former players.

i think what's also glaring us it has been many years since the pats had a "how the @@@@%!%%$#+÷$$@^&*&@@%%$$$# did he catch that???" guy. imo, would rather have mike evans than a separator right now.

How about Davante Adams? He can get open quicker than Evans. We could trade the pick we got from trading Judon for Adams...the Raiders say they want a 3rd.
Maye could use a piece like Adams the right way. Plus there's the Wolf-Packers connection.

Which brings me back to our current WR group. The Pats have some legit promising young talent in Polk, Baker and Boutte that isn't being utilized or developed the way
it should be. Yes, there are lots of moving parts here (weak OL, no time for plays to develop) but I expected to see the coaches develop and utilize these guys quicker.

in 2001 (and early 2000's in general) other teams were not handling their salary cap well and were forced to let good players go. BB was ahead of the curve on that. once teams started to handle that better less quality players were available that route.
(that's a credit to BB to see that and take advantage)

I didn't put a whole lot of stock into the rumors on Adams.

Great guy, great player. We're a better team with him in the lineup, but by the time we are stable enough for Davante to make a big
contribution he might be slipping over the edge.

I think we just go with what we have for now, because it won't make much difference to sign a superstar.

If he gets traded the Raiders will have to pick up a large chunk of his salary for the rest of this year bc no team will trade for him at 31 yrs of age with $13M due the rest of this year and $36M due in '25 and in '26. The good news for the new team is that none of that money for '25 and '26 is guaranteed so a new contract will be in order.
If traded, the Raiders would incur a dead-money charge of $7.85 million in 2024 and $15.7 million in 2025. Better that and gain the draft capital than release him after this year and get nothing for him. The more money the Raiders pick up for this year the higher the pick they can get back, perhaps even a 2nd.
