KU linebackers want NFL shot
By RANDY COVITZ
The Kansas City Star

LAWRENCE | Kansas linebacker Joe Mortensen was so intent on posting a fast time in the 40-yard dash at KU’s Pro Day for NFL scouts, he false-started.

Twice.

“They were telling me I was trying to cheat,” Mortensen said with a smile, “but I was just antsy.”

Mortensen and fellow linebackers Mike Rivera and James Holt were among nine Jayhawk seniors, along with defensive tackle James McClinton from the 2007 team, who worked out on Tuesday for scouts representing eight teams, including Chiefs director of college scouting Chuck Cook.

The three linebackers each led the Jayhawks in tackles during each of the last three years (Holt in 2008, Mortensen in 2007 and Rivera in 2006), and helped Kansas to consecutive bowl victories. But none was invited to last month’s NFL scouting combine.

“That was hard to swallow, but it also gave us more time to get ready for this, so it was a blessing in disguise not being invited,” said Holt, a second-team All-Big 12 selection last season. “You can also use it as motivation.”

Rivera impressed the scouts with his vertical leap of 38.5 inches, which was 1 1/2 inches better than any linebacker at the combine. He also filled out two lengthy questionnaires for the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots, who were on hand, along with Tampa Bay, Chicago, Philadelphia, Tennessee, Minnesota and the Chiefs.

“It’s a personality test,” Rivera said. “There’s not really any right or wrong answers on a lot of it. One hundred five questions on one and 80-something on the other.”

The other question that needed to be answered was whether Rivera and Mortensen, in particular, were healthy. Mortensen is just a year removed from major knee surgery, and Rivera has suffered from knee and ankle issues.

“We are healthy,” Rivera said. “We’ve had time to heal and rest, and with the injuries we had, that’s all we really needed was that time to recover.”

Rivera, who has played both middle and outside linebacker for Kansas, is scheduled to work out April 11 for the Chiefs, who can conduct a Pro Day for local players. Mortensen, who is from Concord, Calif., will do the same for the 49ers.

“I’ve always watched the Chiefs; it’s a great opportunity just to show myself in front of them,” Rivera said. “I think I can fit in any defense, but probably best at middle linebacker, whether it’s in a 3-4 or a 4-3.”

Holt also was used as a pass rusher last season and had 10 sacks, including at least one sack in each of the Jayhawks’ last six games.”

“I felt real great about the season, being able to play different positions, moving to defensive end shows my versatility for the scouts, too,” said Holt, who also played in the Texas vs. The Nation all-star game in El Paso.

“Definitely I can be a special-teams standout, and with a little more work and if I get bigger, I can be a nickel linebacker,” said Holt, who measured at 6 feet 1½ and 223 pounds.

Mortensen, an all-state fullback in high school, worked out at the position on Tuesday, catching passes out of the backfield.

“I haven’t played fullback since high school,” he said, “but I’m a prototypical guy to play fullback. I love to hit
Rivera caught my eye early last season before he was slowed by injuries. He could stand to be a little stronger, but he's no worse than Guyton. He's a three down LB.

NFL.com's Pro Day blog: LB Mike Rivera (6-2, 245 pounds) ran 4.63 and 4.66 in the 40, had a 38 1/2-inch vertical, a 9-foot, 10-inch broad jump, a 4.08 short shuttle and a 6.67 three-cone drill and did 14 bench-press reps.

NFL Draft Scout:
12/03/08 - 2008 ALL-BIG 12 HONARABLE MENTION: Mike Rivera, LB, has been selected All-Big 12 Conference Honarable Mention for the 2008 college football season by the Big 12 coaches. Rivera, a senior from Shawnee Mission, Kan., has 79 tackles through 12 games. He has been named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention in each of the last three years. - Kansas football

03/14/09 - The Bears were looking into Nebraska quarterback Joe Ganz on Thursday following the Cornhuskers' pro day, according to a report. Scout Teddy Monago was on the scene for the Bears, who could also be checking out offensive tackle Lydon Murtha, who has gained a little steam since the combine. "As for Joe Ganz, the quarterback who didn't get a combine invite, he said he thought he did well. Ganz held a questionnaire from the New England Patriots as he left the workout and headed to a meeting with the Chicago Bears. "I thought I threw the ball really well, so I'm really happy with what happened," said Ganz, who measured at a hair over 6 feet. "It's really, really cool to have these guys come up to you and talk to you and talk to you and say you had a good year." - Brad Biggs, The Chicago Sun-Times

Pat White Working Out For Patriots

By Ed Thompson
Scout.com Senior NFL Analyst
Posted Mar 16, 2009

Scout.com Senior NFL Analyst Ed Thompson has learned that West Virginia QB Pat White is working out for the New England Patriots this week.

A source has told Scout.com that West Virginia quarterback Pat White will be working out for the New England Patriots on Tuesday, March 17.

After watching White's speed and nifty moves as a runner, some NFL scouts were projecting White as a potential wide receiver who could also provide plenty of excitement as a return specialist. He rushed for 947 yards, an average of more than 81 yards per contest and ran the ball into the end zone eight times.

But the Mountaineers' signal-caller has made it clear that he could also have a successful career as an NFL quarterback.

During his senior year, White completed 65.7 percent of his throws for 1,842 yards and 21 touchdowns. He then made a statement at the Senior Bowl, earning MVP honors after passing for 126 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown strike, against some of the nation's top defenders. Then at the NFL Scouting Combine, the 6-foot-tall athlete weighed in at a very solid 197 pounds compared to his 182-pound weight at the conclusion of West Virginia's season.

At that weight, White still ran the fastest 40-time at the NFL Combine at 4.55 seconds. He posted a position-best 35-inch vertical jump, finished second in the broad jump, and even finished among the top performers in the 20-yard shuttle.

But it was how well he threw the football during position drills that really got the attention of NFL talent evaluators.

While Tom Brady is expected to be ready to resume his role as the Patriots' starter this season, his former back-up, Matt Cassel will be leading the Kansas City Chiefs offense this year. Cassel was traded to Kansas City after initially being designated as the team's franchise player, preventing him from hitting the market as an unrestricted free agent.

Currently slotted into the No. 2 role, by default, is second-year player Kevin O'Connell, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound passer out of San Diego State.

With White obviously on New England's radar, it appears that the Patriots are at least considering using one of their higher draft picks to give O'Connell a legitimate training camp battle rather than allowing him to automatically slide into the back-up role.

And for anyone who thinks it may be odd that the Patriots would be considering an athletic, mobile quarterback to be next in line behind Brady, consider the fact that O'Connell, a good athlete in his own right, ran the 40-yard dash just six-tenths of a second slower at last year's Combine than the White did this year. So while Brady is more of a pure pocket-passer, New England's showing some interest in having their No. 2 quarterback providing some mobility. That could certainly be an asset offensively as more teams experiment with running plays out of the wildcat formation.

It's still too early to tell if the Patriots are committed to using one of their early-round picks on the quarterback position, but after how quickly they lost Brady last year during their season-opener, it wouldn't be shocking to see them bolster their depth chart with one of the top players at the quarterback position from this draft class.

That kid looks pretty damn good running back punts.

And did you see his combine workout? Freaking thighs are off the charts.

I have to believe that the Pats are less than happy with Slater as their de-facto kick returner. He tries hard, but he has zero wiggle and that fumble to open the 2nd half of the Pittsburgh game was an epic fail. I would not be surprised to see them uprgrade at return guy whether it be kick, punt or both.

We can always send in Faulk for the designated fair-catcher on punts.

I found the coaching call on the Slater KR-muff to be the Epic Fail. There hadn't been a lot of cold, sloppy weather to work the KRs in before that game. Add in the pressure of the game and throwing a SoCal rookie into that situation was a guaranteed shambles that quickly went into disaster. Morris or Faulk or Welker in that situation - that's why they draw the big veteran bucks.

It's a real bummer that Willie Andrews melted down his brain cells for a door stop, Slater just isn't the Gunner Willie was, though they're about equal as lead blockers on KR...maybe Slater's offseason program will tune up his KR skillset a little tighter.

I'd love to see a solid rookie PR get picked up in this draft. They've brought in some good KRs, but don't seem to have much luck with PR.

Henry Melton on the draft radar after impressive Pro Day

By Cedric Golden | Thursday, March 26, 2009, 11:22 AM

Former Texas defensive end Henry Melton may have done himself the most good after competing in every drill at Pro Timing Day Wednesday. He not only competed in every drill, he competed very well, something he needed as that other defensive end at Texas.

The 6-3, 269-pound Melton clocked in the 4.5 range in the 40-yard dash at the UT bubble, which immediately put him on the draft radar, considering the defensive end position is one where big and fast pass rushers are in high demand. His 40 time followed a vertical leap of 34 1/2 inches earlier in the day, which was better than wideout Quan Cosby’s best effort of 33 inches. Melton added a solid 23 repetitions in the 225-pound bench press.

On day when teammate Aaron Lewis was limited after he tweaked his hamstring, Melton did everything right, competing in every drill and improving his draft prospects in front of 60 NFL scouts. After registering 19 solo tackles and 4 sacks in his only season as a starter, Melton wasn’t thought to be a sure-fire draft prospect. That may have changed after Wednesday’s workout.

“(The scouts) got to see the awesome athleticism they didn’t know I had,” Melton said. “I feel pretty good about my performance. I did everything I could do out there.”

Melton’s uncle, former NFL defensive back Ray Crockett, believes Melton will be a steal in this draft if he is selected.

“He wanted him to show his athletic ability and he did,” Crockett said. “With him being a defensive starter for just one year, he had to adjust to a new position. He has already shown the capability to learn and adjust. With is ability, if a team puts him in the right position and nurtures him along, he can play in this league.”

The former super-sized tailback is hoping a team will call his name at next month’s NFL draft because as he so eloquently put it: “it’s better to get drafted than sign as a free agent because if you get drafted, that means they want you.”

Melton has private workouts scheduled with New England, Miami, and Chicago. The Dallas Cowboys have also reportedly shown some interest.

William & Mary

The pro day for William & Mary took place on March 23, with two players working out for representatives from four NFL teams.

CB Derek Cox (6-1 1/4, 188 pounds) got a strong look, and he’ll work out with the Raiders and Patriots next week. He had times of 4.39 and 4.42 seconds in the 40-yard dash, a 36 1/2-inch vertical and an 11-foot, 8-inch broad jump. He also had a 4.11-second short shuttle and a 6.80-second three-cone drill, and he did 12 reps on the bench press.

Stillman College

Four players from Stillman College worked out at the Alabama Pro Day on March 11, with DT Sammie Lee Hill (6-4, 329 pounds) drawing the most interest.

Hill stood on most of his numbers from the combine, though he worked out with defensive line coaches from the Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as well as Cleveland Browns defensive line coach Bryan Cox. Hill has also worked out for the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers, with Steelers assistant head coach/defensive line coach John Mitchell in attendance.

2009 NFL Draft Quick Hits
Ed Thompson
ScoutNFLNetwork.com Mar 29, 2009

Who's been talking to USC DT Fili Moala, Oklahoma safety Nic Harris, Cincinnati DE Connor Barwin, Alabama's Andre Smith, San Diego State's Russell Allen and Western Missouri's Roger Allen? Scout.com Senior NFL Analyst Ed Thompson fills you in on what he's been hearing from the players and his sources.

USC DT Fili Moala told Scout.com that he plans to do a full workout at the school's Pro Day on April 1. The 6-foot-4, 305-pound lineman also said that the Chiefs, Chargers, Steelers, Cardinals, Broncos, Saints, Giants, Cowboys, Browns and Colts were among the teams that he had formal interviews with at the NFL Scouting Combine. So far, he's getting plenty of interest as a DT from teams that run a 4-3 defense and as a DE from teams that primarily use a 3-4 alignment. One of the teams he's already visited is the Buffalo Bills.

Missouri Western's Roger Allen created some nice buzz for himself by benching 225 pounds an astonishing 38 times in front of NFL scouts at the University of Missouri's Pro Day earlier this month. What was even more impressive is that Allen, a 6-foot-3, 326-pound guard, is bouncing back from sports hernia surgery that was performed on February 11. He also participated in some position drills, but will be doing a full workout at his Pro Day on April 2 as he's now 100-percent healthy. One of the teams that has been showing strong interest in Allen is the Kansas City Chiefs, who have scheduled a workout with him on April 10.

Oklahoma safety Nic Harris told Scout.com that he had a private workout with the St. Louis Rams. Harris had a formal interview with St. Louis at the NFL Combine, along with a number of other teams such as the Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, and the San Diego Chargers. The First-Team All-Big 12 defensive back is also being considered as a linebacker candidate by some teams due to his 6-foot-2, 233-pound frame and his ability to dish-out some punishing hits.

Alabama OT Andre Smith completed an official visit with the Buffalo Bills earlier this month, a source has told Scout.com. The 6-foot-four, 325-pound Outland Trophy winner had created some controversy when he left the NFL Scouting Combine early without telling anyone back in February. During his Pro Day workouts, reports indicated that he looked like the consistently dominating blocker that scouts had seen on film, but he only benched 19 reps. That said, he's still likely to be a first-round selection in April.

Linebacker Russell Allen, who finished second all-time in career tackles at San Diego State, really boosted his stock at his recent Pro Day. With 17 NFL teams in attendance, the linebacker benched 24 reps, ran a 4.62 -second 40-time, posted a 33.5-inch vertical and a 9'10" broad jump. According to a source, Carolina head coach John Fox attended the workout, the New England Patriots showed quite a bit of interest, and Allen met privately that day with the Miami Dolphins and the Atlanta Falcons. The Chicago Bears conducted a private workout with him on March 27 that was attended by the team's general manager, Jerry Angelo, and Allen is also scheduled to work out for the Chargers on March 31. With experience as a long-snapper to boot, Allen has started receiving invitations for official visits in April from teams such as the Miami Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

As previously reported by Scout.com, University of Cincinnati DE Connor Barwin has a heavy schedule of workouts and visits. But with his continued rise up draft boards, it's now likely that a team will have to use a first-round selection to land him. Scout.com has learned that a few of the other teams that showed interest in Barwin through their official interviews with him at the NFL Scouting Combine include the Baltimore Ravens, Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The talented defensive end, who is also being considered by some teams as a tight end, will also be attending the Bengals' workout day for local draft prospects on April 14.

Louisville C Wood drawing lots of interest

Posted: March 30th, 2009

At the Louisville Pro Day on March 26, C Eric Wood (6-4, 310 pounds) showed that he is generating a lot of buzz from many NFL teams.

Wood did position drills at the pro day but otherwise stood on his marks from the NFL combine. He has already visited the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals and has worked out for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Denver Broncos. He also has a workout scheduled with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In all, reps from 17 NFL teams attended the pro day, including New England Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia. The 11 players worked out indoors on FieldTurf.

Missouri DL Hood scheduled for visit

By Mike Reiss
Globe Staff / March 31, 2009

When the Patriots have selected defensive linemen in the first round of the NFL draft this decade, they've liked the results - from Richard Seymour (2001), to Ty Warren (2003), to Vince Wilfork (2004).

Scheduled to pick 23d overall in this year's draft - and perhaps keeping in mind that Seymour, Wilfork, and top reserve Jarvis Green are all entering the final year of their contracts - the team might focus on the line with its top pick or high second-rounder (34th overall).

Along those lines, the Patriots are devoting one of their 30 allotted predraft visits at Gillette Stadium to bring in University of Missouri defensive lineman Evander "Ziggy" Hood, according to league sources.

03/16 Pro-Day Updates: Eastern Michigan, Florida Sate, Duke & More

Florida State

UPDATE 6:45PM EST

Sources at the workout have told us Everette Brown looked sensational in position drills. He was run through defensive line and linebacker drills and looked like a natural in pass coverage drills. Sources at the workout told us Brown displayed fluid footwork pedaling in reverse, was able to flip his hips and showed a terrific burst of speed. Brown has a private workout scheduled with the Kansas City Cheifs and already has a workout under the belt with the St. Louis Rams.

Receiver Greg Carr also had a solid day. Carr ran much faster than people thought he was capable of, timing 4.56-seconds on a number of watches. Carr also touched 33-inches on the vertical jump and 9'11'' in the broad.

He had a solid pass catching workout and looked good running routes.

A little more on the workout of Antone Smith.

The smallish running back was timed by some in the high 4.2's during his pro-day. He also finished with an official number of 31-reps on the bench, though three were taken away for not locking out. Otherwise Smith would've completed 34 reps.

Smith caught the ball well out of the backfield and showed a great burst running after the reception.

UPDATE 2:45PM EST

The workout in Tallahassee was interrupted by a monsoon which passed through the town. Everyone retreated for cover inside but have since returned and the players are now taking part in position drills.

Earlier in the workout Everette Brown completed 31 reps on the bench but had two taken away for not locking out and his official number was 29. He also touched 35-inches in the vertical jump.

The comment made to us during his position drills thus far is "Brown looks the part."

UPDATE 1PM EST

As many as 28 teams are on hand in Tallahassee for the Seminoles pro-day. The workout just started and the players are running the forty.

Everette Brown will stand on most of his combine numbers but participate in position drills. The Miami Dolphins sent their linebackers coach to watch Brown. The New England Patriots linebacker coach is also flying into Tallahassee and will be meeting privately with Brown Tuesday evening for dinner.

Thus far we hear the times have been pretty fast. Running back Antoine Smith reportedly ran his forty in the high 4.3's. More as it comes in.

Duke

Receiver Eron Riley stole the show today.

Riley measured 6032/206-pounds and was timed by the Denver Broncos in times which ranged from 4.30-to-4.36 seconds. He posted a short shuttle time of 4.06 seconds and three cone of 6.17 seconds. Riley's vertical jump was 40-inches, his broad was 11'2'' and he completed 13 reps on the bench.

Linebacker Michael Tauiliili posted times in the low 4.7's in the forty after completing 21 reps on the bench.

Eastern Michigan

UPDATE 2:30PM EST

Inside/middle linebacker Daniel Holtzclaw was another EMU prospect who had a terrific day.

Holtzclaw measured 6006/242-pounds, posted a 32-inch vertical jump, 9'6'' broad jump and completed 33-reps on the bench. His forty times were slightly disappointing at 4.81-to-4.88 but Holtzclaw's shuttle times were terrific.

His short shuttle was timed at 4.31-seconds, 60-yard shuttle at 11.48-seconds and 3-cone 6.86-seconds. This surprised many on hand as Holtzclaw is considered a downhill linebacker and lateral movement is not his forte'.

He looked terrific in position drills and had a frame which was described by one scout as iron clad. The New York Jets, Houston Texans and New York Giants sent scouts to watch Holtzclaw.

Eighteen teams were on hand for the EMU pro-day, including Carolina Panther general manager Marty Hurney. Offensive lineman TJ Lang lit it up and is building a large buzz around him.

Lang measured 6040/316-pounds, completed 30-reps on the bench than ran his forty's in times which ranged from 5.15-to-5.19 seconds. His short shuttle was in the low 4.4-second area and Lang posted a 26.5-inch vertical jump.

Jackson Jaguar offensive line coach Andy Heck ran the workout and put Lange through a tough session of position drills. From all accounts Lange looked terrific. One source at the workout told us Lang looked "trim" at 316-pounds. A tackle at EMU, Lange did a lot of center work today and snapped for the scouts on hand.

Lang has private workouts set up with the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots. He also has visits set up with the Jaguars, Ravens and Chicago Bears.

Updated Notes: The New York Jets are holding a private workout with Rutgers signal caller Mike Teel today. The Jets will also use on of their official pre-draft visits to bring Teel to their facility in New Jersey within the next two weeks.

-- Players projected in lower rounds whom I have seen mocked in a higher round by various draftnik sites or pundits will have the higher round shown in parentheses before their name.
