Well I can fill you in on a few things.

There are many other file-sharing programs besides Napster. Seek and you shall find. The RIAA has been and still is going after people who share hundreds or thousands of files on file-sharing programs but I have never heard about them going after anyone for just downloading stuff. Translation - don't share and you should be fine.

I don't recommend file sharing programs though. I personally use IRC, the last open frontier of the internet IMO. Besides some release groups (people who rip and release movies, games, apps, and music) that the FBI went after I know of nobody who's ever been sued for grabbing stuff off IRC. If you're a noob it'll take a while to learn how IRC works though. Google is your friend.

BTW....... Dchester, I didn't post any of this. A hacker has obviously hacked my PatriotsPlanet account. I'm a law abiding citizen. :D

Undernet or Efnet?

Of course they do. A CD is still an album.

al·bum
n.
A book with blank pages for the insertion and preservation of collections, as of stamps, photographs, or autographs.

A set of musical recordings stored together in jackets under one binding.
The holder for such recordings.
A recording of different musical pieces.
A printed collection of musical compositions, pictures, or literary selections.
A tall, handsomely printed book, popular especially in the 19th century, often having profuse illustrations and short, sentimental texts.

In my neck of the woods, an album is made of vinyl, a CD is a CD, a tape is a tape and an 8-track is an 8-track.

This could turn into a whole ethical argument, and that is not my intention, but I don't think that it is that black and white. When Napster was king, I downloaded gigs of stuff that I NEVER would have bought. Are they losing any money when I never would have bought it anyway? To add to that, there were a few other things that I downloaded which I never would have been exposed to otherwise, that caused me to go out and buy an album.

The whole model is undergoing sweeping change now, and downloading music (or movies) is not always the same as going into a B&M and stealing it. Especially when you consider what I said previously about my own personal tastes. MP3s are shitty quality compared to the original.

HUH? Just so I understand what you said...If you steal something you never would buy it's not stealing? You don't really believe that do you? UT thats as good as one other poster said its ok to steal from artist that are wealthy....? I don't really want an ethical argument either but i'm sorry I don't buy your reasoning. Anyway like I said viruses and trojans are momey in my pocket and that makes me smile but think of the irony here if you were to get a virus or trojan downloading something you would never buy in the first place....ah life is good.

I think I'll try answering the title of this thread... it was kind of a tie, bought Disturbed's "Ten Thousand Fists," System of a Down's "Hypnotize," and the new Korn at Best Buy right after Christmas.

I never said it was okay to steal from em because they are wealthy. Just that I didn't care.

And if all these files are infected with viruses and trojans then there wouldn't be many people downloading them. You're also not the only person who knows how to clean up an infected computer.

It's a moral choice to be sure. Personally I don't feel bad if some musician has to live in a 5 million dollar home instead of a 10 million dollar one. That's just me though.

You won't be seeing any more problems from WinMX btw. They've been shut down.

Sorry A9 if I misinterpeted your post, the above was your post and you are correct you never said it was okay just that you didn't feel bad.

File sharing programs are just programs that turn your PC into a server that hundreds of people can download from you just as you are able to download from their pc's. Most of those people are so busy downloading "free" music and porn they don't even bother to virus scan their PC's so in essence you are downloading from a very shaky source. I've serviced pc's owned by teenagers who are using file sharing programs and they don't even have a anti-viruse software installed.
There are internet sites that charge on a per song download and at least those providers keep their servers clean and protected with anti virus software. Sure you have to pay but its a lot safer way to get music. If you can't see how bad a source file sharing programs are then good luck to you, and don't forget to back up your free music because one day when your system no longer will run thats when most people pay for their free music and don't forget not every piece of malware/spyware/virus/trojans can be cleaned without a total reformat and reload. You are correct I'm not the only pc repair person in the area but there is plenty of business to go around. Did you ever think about this, it would benefit the music companies to hire people to just write virsuses and then join a file sharing progam just to infect others. It is one way to make people stop and think especially after they get burned 60 or 80 bucks to get their PC fixed. Hell yrs back two employees of symantec (norton) were actually caught writing virsuses....good for business now isn't it.
I could tell you some real horror stories about messed up pc's and its not just teenagers.

I can't argue with anything you say there. Personally I don't use file sharing. In my time I've downloaded hundreds if not thousands of files. Worst I've ever gotten infected with was probably some spyware. I'm probably just lucky though. I've actually gotten a lot more crap from porn surfing to tell you the truth. :D

Whether it is stealing or not is a separate argument and not what I was trying to say. What I was trying to say is the artist is NOT losing any money by MY download of MP3s.

Virus and Trojan threats do not concern me.

Here is a question. What we are really talking about is RIGHTS to a song, correct? If I buy an album, I have the right to listen to that album in any player. I even have the right to make copies for myself as backups.

If I bought an album in 1978 on vinyl, did I not buy the rights to those songs then? Shouldn't it then be legal for me to download MP3 copies of those songs, because I already spent my money on the rights to them?

Yes what you described concerning the purchasing of rights is the same way I see it. In Your previous post though you said you downloaded content you normally wouldn't buy. By that I assumed you had never paid for those rights therefore that would have been stealing.
