Looking at the Patriots 2023

I'm told the Pats' want JC to be more focused on his man in coverage so that lapses in coverage don't happen.
It's not an ability or mental instability issue according to those I've spoken with although he did miss curfew on Saturday night as did Jack Jones.

Douglas is mid right. 5th best separation. 15th best YAC. He's a keeper so far. Game plan for him over Juju (mid bottom) and Parker (left bottom)

What is the likelihood the Patriots pick up Macs 5th year option? If they do is it more likely due to their faith in Mac hoping he can turn it around after the situation he has been given on O the last year and a half Or is it that there aren’t suitable upgrades available?

We’re only halfway through the season, so things could still turn around, but Mac Jones has now had two straight years of regression. Picking up his fifth-year option after the season would mean not only committing to him for the 2024 season but also 2025. Jones wouldn’t even be starting right now if the Patriots had a better backup option behind him. He would have lost the top job after being benched two straight weeks against the Cowboys and Saints.
Jones has played better since those two games, but it’s only translated to one win against the Bills.

It’s definitely true that Jones is in a bad situation. He’s had three offensive coordinators in three years (who are all running versions of the same offense), a weak set of offensive playmakers and a porous offensive line. But even that doesn’t excuse all of the dumb mistakes he’s made over the first nine weeks of the season.

It’s unclear who will be coaching or making personnel decisions for the Patriots in 2024. But if that person is not Bill Belichick, then what exactly has Jones proven to the rest of the NFL over the last three years?

And if Jones isn’t playing with the Patriots in 2024, then it seems unlikely that he would be handed a starting job elsewhere. I do think there would be interest in Jones playing in certain systems. He would provide a very strong backup option for a team running a Shanahan-style system.

@killerhz
do you think the JC decision was based solely on missing curfew or did the report from the chargers GM of his actions & lack of commitment during his tenure play a part

I don’t think that anything that transpired between the Chargers and J.C. Jackson had any influence on the cornerback not making the trip to Germany with the rest of the Patriots. That wouldn’t be fair to Jackson since he started anew after being traded. But I think it does show a pattern of behavior that might have followed Jackson back to New England.

I’m not sure how this plays out between the Patriots and Jackson at this point. I think if they were going to cut him, then it would have happened before he didn’t make the trip to Germany.

But that doesn’t mean that another incident could spur that action.

@2cazz
Boutte getting a shot at any point?

This would be a good week for it. But the same could have been said about last week.

Patriots starting “X” receiver DeVante Parker has been ruled out with a concussion and didn’t make the trip to Germany. Jalen Reagor filled in for Parker last week, but he had a bad drop on a deep pass. Second-year pro Tyquan Thornton also got benched early in the game.

There seems to be a potential spot for Kayshon Boutte on the active roster alongside Demario Douglas, JuJu Smith-Schuster and either Reagor or Thornton. And it’s worth seeing how Boutte looks over the final eight games of the season so the Patriots know what they have in the LSU product in 2024 and beyond.

@proudblackmatt
Hi Doug, with the recent leaks from inside the building (Bill’s “lucrative multi-year contract”, Mac “infuriates” coaching staff, the immediate information on JC and Jack Jones situations) do you get a sense that people in the building are starting to get nervous?

I think that’s possible. But I also think that a losing season like this one leads to frustration and a lot of venting.

@randomsnsndns
Are we gonna tank or are kraft and belichick too stubborn??

I don’t think they really need to tank. The roster is bad enough that the Patriots aren’t winning games without them actively trying to lose.

@ajones2513
If you had to choose, Bowers or Harrison jr

I would take Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison, Jr., over Georgia tight end Brock Bowers.

@ThePatsPod
Hypothetical; Jerod Mayo is HC next season, who is the OC?

Bill O’Brien or Josh McDaniels would be the strongest candidates.

@Mark_1878_
Doug, how does NE fill the Devin McCourty sized hole in the secondary?

With better cornerback play and by moving Marte Mapu to linebacker.

-----------------------------------------
Everyone agrees Mac has played poorly. Everyone also recognizes his poor situation. Mac has to improve his play considerably or he will be lost into obscurity.

Boutte please.

Injuries leading to a bad roster = "organic tanking" & I'm on board with this as painful as it is.

Both Marvin Harrison Jr. and Brock Bowers are great players but Marvin Harrison Jr. would be our first feared WR1 since Moss. We need playmakers and he's a playmaker.

I've seen enough of Mapu at S to know he can't do the job. Giving up long TD throws that cost us games successively in embarrassing fashion would get another player benched if there were an alternative. Find an alternative starting this week.

I think that IF Bill is fired or quits then the decision to draft Mapu, and go D on our top 3 picks, is going to stick in my mind as one
of the examples of Belichick marching to his own drummer and straight off a cliff.

Granted, there have been dozens of examples of his unique drafting philosophy bringing us both successes and failures to introduce as evidence,
but his pattern seems to indicate that he likes to draft obscure guys from small schools that need years of development and the results haven't
been great, especially over the last decade. Way too many busts.

I think maybe Bill enjoys his maverick status a bit too much and it calls into question his judgement, which was considered rock solid earlier
in his Patriots career. Perhaps his ego has gotten in the way of, you know, building a good roster.

I might point out that he often seems averse to addressing a position of need preferring a wait and see approach. Losing DMac seemed to
call for a player with a similar skill set to balance off our bigger Safeties none of whom are particularly fast on the back end and he seemed
to think that it wouldn't matter too much. We are paying the price for that decision.

I could also point out that he drafted Jake Andrews several selections in front of Dawand Jones and, so far, that looks to be a
blunder because Jones is showing solid development at a position where we were desperate for help. I saw him doing a creditable
job against Nick Bosa a few weeks back and few can even slow that guy down. Certainly nobody on our roster.

I keep coming back to his statement where he just wants to coach guys that he likes at this stage of his career. Maybe he should instead
think about whether or not they can help him win games first and foremost because the guys he apparently likes don't seem to be particularly
dependable or capable.

Mapu should be playing linebacker. I have no idea what their plan is with him, other than throwing him to the wolves and hope he catches on.

You mean to tell me he wouldn't have given you more than what tavai has the last could of weeks?

Yeah, he should be a coverage linebacker.

More on JC Jackson and Jack Jones from Mike R.

3. J.C.'s accountability: Jackson wasn't just late for curfew last week, the cornerback didn't show up at the team hotel at all, according to a source familiar with Belichick's thinking on the decision to leave him behind for the team's trip to Germany. Jackson also didn't take part in pregame warmups last week, making it puzzling that he ultimately played 53 snaps in the loss to the Commanders. Belichick said he expects Jackson to be available moving forward, but how Jackson responds remains a wild card.

4. Jones' demotion: Cornerback Jack Jones had a reduced role last week after missing curfew, but unlike Jackson, he eventually showed up, according to a source. Jones, who popped up on the injury report Friday (knee, questionable), has the support of teammate Jabrill Peppers. "He's responded. We're all grown men. He took it like a man," Peppers said. "He knows what we expect from him. He knows what the team expects from him. We expect that we'll get that from him. We handled it. It's behind us now."

I'd bet BB is livid at having to play JCJackson a single snap after such willful disregard for the good of the team.

Now that I'm hoping for the Patriots to "organically tank", I think I'll be cheering for the Browns in the AFC and the Lions in the NFC to do some damage.

I want to see the Jags or Bengals do well in the AFC. I will also be cheering for Detroit and the Niners.

Jack Jones is cut.
i wonder if whatever jack did is worse than what jc did?
i also wonder if they had the type and amount of leaders in the lr now that they used to if this even would have come to this.

jmac talked to kraft (gathering before game in germany)and bb (production meetings,says bb still loves the game) and he THINKS they blow it up after the season and bb coaches elsewhere. on good morning football this am. will try to edit w/link once i can get video.

I am not ready for that if that's the case.
