Looking at the Patriots 2024

So, since Belichick was fired - Mayo was elevated to HC, Covington, the DL coach was elevated to DC - they brought in the Rams ST coach (who's special teams was actually worse than the Patriots this year), after the Falcons coach publicly told them to go screw, and instead of bringing in any of the numerous young coaches for OC - including Nick Caley, who supposedly was interested in coming back here - turns out he wasn't, and brought in the guy who's been fired from his last 5 jobs in Alex Van Pelt.

Every day this smells like a) The Patriots are unable to convince any good coach to come here (as evidenced by the dumpster diving they've done outside the organization), and b) it's a real 'run it back' mentality.

I really hope I'm wrong on both counts, and it all works out.

No but that's over the next two years. This spring is time to build the offense. We can mess with the defense next year as we lose people.

Just out of curiousity, if you have the info available, how many FAs on offense over the next two years?

EDIT: Not discounting the need to keep the defense strong, b. I would like to see an offense-dominated draft this year.

To me this year the FA period should primarily be about D. Small upgrades and veteran replacements to keep the D going. This works out because when we finally get to FA I'm thinking there won't be a lot there in our big positions on need.

Most of the O should be about bringing talent on that side of the ball

I mean, just taking out the obvious smoke signals, Baker Mayfield would thrive in Van Pelt's offense, he did before.
I'd love him here. His wit aside, he's a baller. The way he competed all season drove that Buccs team. If we wangled MHJ for the first pick and we got Mayfield here, imagine the difference straight away that would make?

i am really hopeful about the Patriots this coming season...yeah, so what else is new, right? but I think we are in terrific shape.

Defense was SOLID last year w/o our top pass rusher and CB. How amazing is that. We should be able to focus on the offense finally this year, almost totally.

And this is the year to do it. Lots of cap space. The lowest we've drafted since Bledsoe. LFG!
Agree 100 percent. I am psyched for the draft and for free agency. Now that we have new folks in charge, I am excited to see how all of the capital is spent. I do agree also that I think much of it will be spent on the offense - finally.

At this point as fans we can only follow the trail the team is taking, and it's hard to not see it this way.

Other than an amazing FA (judging by the coaches hired I'm going to assume more dumpster diving will be done to get players) and a great draft I'd be pleasantly surprised if Pats aren't picking top 5 again next year.

We had 4 wins this year and no QB. I believe if are able to use our draft and FA capital, there will be upswing next year. I mean the bar is drastically low.

Here's the thing, I believe you're running it back with new draft picks, some dumpster-diving FAs that were slightly overpaid to get to the cap floor, and the same No QB.

And honest to god, if you're getting a draft haul trading out of 3, and picking up one of the top 3 wideouts in the process, because you don't believe in the QBs, and come back in 2025 with a couple of top 10 picks or more? I'm really ok with that.

It's the bullshit I can't stand. It's the Krafts treating the fans and season ticket holders like fucking morons.

"We need playmakers" no shit, Bob, we've been saying that since Randy Moss left. I'm really hoping that pick 3 isn't Jayden Daniels, because if it is, it's yet another PR move. Because he's not him.

Gonzo is working with former WR Steve Smith. Smith will show him how to play tough.

Thanks. I lived near Baltimore in the 70's and remember that Ted Marchibroda, the Colts' HC, had the philosophy of "Strengthen Your Strengths." That is, If you have one area of the team (he was thinking more of positions than O vs D) that was exceptionally strong, you should focus on that in the draft.

Bob has always been spouting that drivel. I am pretty excited to see how everything pans out this offseason. We have a lot of ammunition and hopefully we spend it as wisely as possible.

I like the philosophy of addressing areas of weakness via free agency and then you enter the draft able to take the next best available athlete, still leaning toward filling weak areas but not handcuffed to that.

Of the big 3 on O, (QB, WR, T) you MIGHT be able to address WR. Two of the top three tackles in FA are Brown/BigMike, and the other guy is Dallas's LT. We need to get younger and find what is going to fit AvP's I.

And I don't think there is a long term fix at QB out there in FA.

D will probably be a better place to look for FAs.
