Looking at the Patriots 2024

To me it screams "The Krafts are cheap".

BB made the model work because he could bring the best out some disgruntled or misused player, but there's no guarantee the model will work without the brains.

I didn't expect them to go all out spending money, but this offseason was one of, if not the most disappointing I've witnessed.

The draft sort of put a bandaid on it because on paper it looks like a solid draft, but that remains to be seen.

Either way I fully expect Pats picking top 5 next season when it's all said and done.

All that said, I hope I'm wrong. I'll gladly eat crow if Pats are .500 or more this season.
This tired narrative that the Krafts are cheap just flies in the face of reality. Take a look at how much has been spent this offseason and then come back and tell me they're cheap. Just because they aren't spending in the way or on who you would like, doesn't make them cheap.

Get your head out of the mud.

Over the past 10 years, the Patriots ranked last in cash spending ($1.62 billion) and were 31st in the league in cash spending in 2023.
"They say we've been low spenders in the last 10 years, and that might be true," Kraft said. "But we had a pretty good record. And we won three Super Bowls." Feb 9, 2024

Robert Kraft pushes back on Patriots' lack of spending narrative

Oh yeah, that new lighthouse and giant screen is really going to help the Pats win games in the coming years...

No?
Then pray tell, which free agents, other than our own, did they spend significant money on?
How much cap space do they have left?
How does that compare with other NFL teams?

You defending the Krafts is ridiculous based on all of the info that proves the contrary that has come out over the last year or so.

I dunno. Look at all the first and second round picks who were not worth resigning over the last 15 years. Maroney, Merriweather, Ras Dowling, the other 2nd round CBs, Chandler Jones “because of the spice police station incident”, Easley, Brown, Harry, Sony, Wyhnn, Solder who got exposed when he didn’t have Brady.
Really it was Gronk, McCourty, and Hightower who were high picks who worth second contracts. I know the Pats got some production out of some of those other guys, but by and large they were not worth giving big money to. For the most part the good draft picks have been reupped for respectable money.
Almost always giving money to the top Free Agents is a huge mistake. I’m glad the Pats stayed away from Calvin Ridley this year.

Lol, exactly what I'm talking about, spending hundreds of millions on their own free agents doesn't count?

First of all, you cannot blame the Krafts for not spending. Bill Belichick had control of every dollar spent or put away and got a bonus for himself for every unspent dollar. BB was the guy who decided who got a second contract and what free agents were signed. In his twenty two years as the GM/HC did he jump in to the FA pool on day before or the first day of free agency?? Never!!! He always picked up the cheap leftovers on Day 3 or 4.

This year, there were not many needed free agents by the Patriots. Please don't say Calvin Ridley. ZHe wasn't coming to snow country on his worst day. That and girlfriend didn't want to move north of Tennessee.

Left tackle is the only thing I'm having a real hard time getting my mind around. There are two outstanding LTs still not signed. David Bahktari (GB) and Donovan Smith (KC). The problem is that both are over 30 and both want three or more years on a contract. AND The both want more than $15M a year.
Both would be an anchor on the left side.

If I were Wolfe, I'd put a 3 year $36M contract out there with $15M guaranteed to the first of the two who put ink on it. I guarantee that one of them would cripple the other to grab the pen.

Patsfan09.
I always enjoy your posts and opinions. I know we often disagree, but I’m glad you haven’t blocked me.

Im curious though. You disliked my last post. Which of those players that were listed do you think deserved a second contract at market value?

I wouldn't say they are outstanding, that's a huge stretch. They are the best of what's left, each have concerns otherwise they would be on a roster by now. I can only assume that the Pats believe what they have at left tackle right now is comparable or they simply are waiting to see how training camp pans out. Don't forget there will be opportunities to upgrade that position and rosters settle across the league, there will be vets that gt released, and become available for trade, I can't believe that they aren't watching this and don't have several contingencies in play.
