Looking at the Patriots 2024

Offensive points thru 2 games this year: 36

Offensive points thru 2 games last year: 37
It looks a little less horrendous, though. Or maybe just bad in a slightly different way. Last year didn't they have a bunch of points early in the season from turnovers giving them short fields? I think only 3 of those so far this year, right?

Yep, I think winning week one made people reevaluate where they thought the team was....that was a mistake. This year my hope was the team would not look as lost and incompetent and not loose games because of stupid reasons. We didn't lose yesterday because of incompetence, we just aren't good...and that is reality.

If the front 4 rushing was White, Barmore, Judon, and a forth determined by scheme, that first stat would look almost exactly the opposite. Not #1/2, but probably top 4-6 range. But I don't hate the Judon trade.
They have 5 defensive linemen on the squad right now. White, Wise, Godchaux, Eukele and Phrams. White has been phenomenal. Wise and Goodchaux have been competent. Eukele and Phrams are backups who are playing out of position, they're not defensive tackles.

This was another area of roster mismanagement that hasn't been talked about nearly as much - but how do you go from dressing 7 and 8 defensive linemen a game to dressing 5? Judon's gone, Barmore's hurt - but honestly, it doesn't matter how well any of those other 5 play, you don't have enough guys to ROTATE THE LINEMEN OUT, so they're going to be EXHAUSTED COME THE 4TH QUARTER, like, you know, exactly what happened in yesterday's game. The Patriots pitched a shutout in the 2nd half - until the last two drives, where they gave up 2 FGs.

So, while I agree, if Judon or Barmore were here, they'd be in the 4-6 range. If they got two backup-level players (An End and a Tackle), to make 7, they'd also probably be in the 4-6 range, and moreover they'd also be 2-0.

Oh, don't get it twisted though, there was plenty of incompetence to go with the lack of talent.

3rd and 1, up 3, around 2 minutes to go, on the Seahawks 20, you've run for 180 yards on the day...what would you run?
4th and foot on your own 39 in overtime, do you punt the ball away, or do you just sneak it and get the first down?
1st quarter, sitting in zone, but Gonzalez doesn't get the call for some reason, and Metcalf goes for 60 and a touchdown because no one bothered to cover 14.
Can't pick up a simple overload field goal block.

That goes beyond the incompetence of the front office, putting those two lines, the two most important position groups on the field, in each of their current states - on purpose. Either they THINK those guys are good enough, or they have another reason to do what they've done.

Caleb Williams o-line getting him killed and bears fans saying you can’t ruin him behind a bad o-line.
Bryce young getting benched by Panthers. Not sure bryce was ever going to be good but he wasn’t ready to be thrown into the fire on a bad team

I think pats are handling Maye the right way. If they handled the o-line the right way it might be different but watching jacoby under siege this is for the best

so he sits until the online works. what if you upgrade the oline and either it still sucks next year or some guys get hurt. does he sit again? this issue will be that next year he will still be playing like a rookie since he will have zero live reps. but hey then next year we can say year 3 will be his year. they should have spent the money on the oline this year and just played him

he has to start at some point, and if Pats haven't fixed o-line next year then that's Wolf/Mayo's fault. I expect Maye to be in at some point this year, if only that Jacoby will get killed behind this line. it's to Jacoby's credit he is doing what he has done.

Jordan Love didn't sit because of crappy o-line, but he (was) doing pretty good until he got injured. so some sitting didn't hurt him.

Maye can watch and learn... how to run for your life!

someone said in another thread on the o-line that if/when Sow and Strange are back (who knows on Strange) that might make some diff on the o-line in as much as what bodies they have can do "better".

My fear is if and when they do come back, will it make a substanstive difference. The Patriots are playing 4 guards and a center on the offensive line. 3 of which can't play at all, and one who is on their last legs. Sow and Strange will mitigate some of that (although to what degree I'm not sure), but you're still going to have 4 guards and a center out there.

Remember, you can go to the draft thread and actually see this. 'Why are they taking another guard to play tackle?'

What the first two games showed is we will need absolutely everything going our way to put us in a position with a chance of a win. We need to not turn the ball over, which we didn't yesterday or in week one. But we got no turnovers yesterday, and you feel we need at least a couple of those every game to be in with a shot of winning. We just cannot afford any slip-ups like a blocked FG even. It's that precarious. We don't have the tools to claw back any lead if we fall behind or if we had a really bad half etc etc

and this all has to be done when a big play on offense will be 15 yards (most likely a run) Other then White the D-line is over worse then last year. and i can tell you right now the play calling on Defense is trending that way also. All out blitz on 3rd and 9 and got eaten up in the 4th qtr and OT. No balls to go for it on 4th and 1 when you knew your D was Had. We are farther behind then we were last year by a long shot
