Looking at the Patriots 2024

They will have to put an extra O lineman out there to help. I expect it.
Yes. 6th OL on the left side this time?
Fundamentally, this shouldn't help much because it's still a numbers game - you just rush one more. It does help the outside angle on the side with the extra OL.

But I don't think we have an OT on either side that can stop Bosa. If you're SF, wouldn't you just send Bosa to the side with normal number of OLs? He does flip sides, right?

It's reached a critical stage
Cornerback Alex Austin, guard Michael Jordan and tackle Vederian Lowe will be out for the Week 4 matchup. More could join them if any of the four questionable players aren’t able to go.

Anfernee Jennings, Jonathan Jones, Sidy Sow and Caedan Wallace are all questionable with injuries.

I read an article that suggested the 49ers run defense isn’t as good as everyone thinks.
I don’t really care about wins or losses this year.
It’s about October. The itch to really see Maye is getting stronger. Brissett has done as well as you can ask though.

From Reiss's Quick Hits

"Not making an excuse for a short week. But we had 6-7 [tackles for a loss] where we just missed the tackle on the running back or the receiver. We have to be better at fundamentals first of all. I think once we do that, we'll be OK."

The 49ers are a challenging team to face for a defense -- who blew seven edges and allowed Rodgers to escape the pocket last week -- looking to return to its fundamental roots. "San Fran wants you to be undisciplined so then they can hit the home run. Get out of your rush lanes. Get you to not be disciplined in your pass rush," Godchaux said.

"Brock Purdy is a really good scrambler; doesn't get a lot of credit but he is really athletic. So we just have to stay home, set the edge of the defense, make them cut the ball back. And when they cut it back, we have to make the tackle. Last week against the Jets, we missed so many tackles. It was so frustrating because we were like, 'Why are we on the field so much?'"

That most recent performance is why few give the Patriots a chance to upset the 49ers, and perhaps also explains why coach Jerod Mayo discussed unexpected results across the league with players when they returned from three days off on Monday.

"I tried to put some things in perspective," Mayo said. "You have a team that's picked to win the Super Bowl and gets blown out the next week. Right now it's about who can get better the quickest. That's what we have to do -- get back to the fundamentals."

Godchaux said the Patriots responded with two of their best practices of the year -- first on Monday and then in full pads on what defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington called "a work day Wednesday" when they "brought their hard hat" and focused on run defense -- which is why his belief remains high.

2. No Brady in Week 5: Barring an unexpected change in the coming days, Tom Brady isn't scheduled to work the Patriots' Week 5 home game against the Dolphins, which will be broadcast on Fox. A source familiar with his schedule expects he will call the Cardinals-49ers game.

3. Maye update: One lingering question is how close rookie quarterback Drake Maye, who is getting 30% of the first-team repetitions in practice in addition to playing on the scout team, might be to taking over as QB1.

Mayo reiterated this week that the team has no plans to bring in a veteran quarterback, which reinforces that he and executive director of player personnel Eliot Wolf would be comfortable turning to Maye now in the event of an injury to veteran Jacoby Brissett.

To this point, Brissett has done nothing to lose the job and is a team captain. He has taken a pounding behind shaky offensive line play and blitz pickup from running backs. But Maye, who Mayo said was making a charge by the end of the preseason, continues to progress behind the scenes.

"Really good," offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said when asked how Maye has looked in practice. "I think the game experience [in Week 3] will only help him moving forward. The plan is in place and I think we're seeing him starting to grow on the practice field as well."

6. Strange's status: Third-year offensive lineman Cole Strange, who tore the patellar tendon in his left knee last December and is on the physically unable to perform list, was a consistent presence in the locker room this past week during the time reporters had access.

While Strange is eligible to begin practicing next week, my observation is that isn't currently on the radar. A more likely scenario is that others on the PUP list -- receiver Kendrick Bourne, linebacker Sione Takitaki and possibly safety/linebacker Marte Mapu -- begin practicing.

10. Did you know, Part II: If the Patriots lose to the 49ers and drop to 1-3, it will mark the fourth consecutive season that the team has a losing record through the first four games -- the longest streak in franchise history.

Let's play Maye. So he can be set up for failure . This O-line is getting brisset killed every week.

I'm not a fan of putting Maye out there behind this crappy OL that Eliot built. For what purpose? To see him go down with a season ending injury that could linger into next year?

I could see him being put in for few plays at the end of games vs teams who don't have good pass rushes but that's about it.

I'm fine with Brissett absorbing this punishment as long as he can stay healthy enough to do it. AVP needs to run the ball 80-90% to prevent injury to Jacoby.

I thought Bears were giving the Pats a run for their money, but other than the Panthers (who look much improved with Dalton under center) I'm confident Pats offense is the worst in the league.

At least they don't pass the eye test. Unless they're some unforeseen improvements this team is lined up for a 1-16 record.

I can't wait for the PFF grades to come out for this week, and tell us how Sidy Sow and Mike Onwenu weren't nearly as bad as they clearly were.

Mike Onwenu was worse than Robinson yesterday. He spent more time on his ass yesterday than Javon Baker.

It may be time for the Patriots to consider selling?
Everyone knew what this season was. Especially the team making personnel decisions. Back in August everyone knew for sure the Pats would be picking top 5.
lol and now it may be time for them to consider selling? Not then?

While looking through the coaching staff, I didn't realize Deron Mayo was the strength and conditioning coach .
Every team is hit with injuries , and Pats have had a lot IMHO.
I know little about him, He might excel at his job, But I do remember plenty of the Nepotism thing because BB had his son's coaching .
Just Saying

peppridge farm remembers... :coffee:

The Patriots could win a game or possibly even 2 of the next 5.

After these last 2 poor performances, I have a feeling these next 5 games will tell us what kind of a coach Mayo will be.

this next one against miami with no QB should tell us a lot. I think this week is the most winnable due to no Tua. Jags and Titans will be interesting and by Nov the Rams may not have any players left the way injuries are killing them.

The guys on Patriots Unfiltered are sniffing glue. Apparantley, all the offensive woes are purely down to Jacoby Brissett. Yep, he's holding onto the ball too long, not making the reads, poor delivery etc. Incredibly, no mention of the fact Brissett is nearly getting decapitated on every play due to ZERO protection. Evan gave one reference to the OL by saying Mayo should be banging on Wolf's door, telling him to get in an O Lineman from the market, like, now. Evan honestly believes the offense would be transformed with Maye starting. WTF are the guys watching??

Fred Kirsch is getting all stroppy because of fans complaining about the team......he's saying the team is exactly where he thought they'd be, and what were the fans expecting?

I mean it's negligent analysis and shows clearly how these guys are employees of Kraft Entertainment. The most basic analysis would tell you the team has had a series of OL issues for 2-3 seasons, and going into this season, they had the draft capital and cap room to really go a long way to fixing that, and they did precisely nothing.
