Looking at the Patriots 2026 - Iron Sharpens Iron

Mike Reiss on X:
"The Patriots have informed LB/personal protector Marte Mapu that they intend to release him, per sources.

Mapu, a third-round pick in 2023, has appeared in 44 NFL games (10 starts). Enters last year of his contract in 2026 and is due a base salary of $1.508 million."

Mapu is the last of Bill's quirky day 2 picks.

Vrabel has replaced 75% of the players he inherited in just over 1 year. Only 14 to 15 are left now.
We all knew that had to happen and we're all grateful it happened so quickly. Upgrades everywhere you look.
Thank you, Mike!

Marcus Jones says hi

?
Sorry, but I don't know what you mean. Jones wasn't a quirky pick and he was drafted in the 3rd round. 2X All Pro.
Who defines quirky? I wasn't on here back then but I used to go on Patsfans and they dogged him over there as an undersized STer who would never start at DB.

Patsfans explains it! LOL. I left Patsfans a long time ago.
Quirky in the context I used it means a guy Bill drafted in the 2nd round that no one had ever heard of. He was especially fond of safeties there.

Nyet. You said day 2, not round 2, and used Mapu as an example who was round 3 like Jones.

Jones was a pretty quirky pick because he was considered by many to be too undersized to be likely useful on defense, but a ST specialist and possibly a gadget offensive option.

Many here loved the pick from the start. Marcus Jones had one of the all time descriptions on one of his public scouting reports - maybe the beast? ~"Marcus Jones is undersized, but prowling around the secondary he brings to mind a hyena hunting a lion." And wildly accurate, to boot.

That's the first I've seen that scouting report. Awesome!

I'm one who loved the Jones pick. And btw, everyone here knows it's the quirky 2nd round picks Bill was famous for drafting. 2nd round is day 2.
I should have been more explicit but thought that was understood here.

Was Gronk one of those quirky second rounders?

Gronk admitted to having made a worse first impression during his pre-draft visit. We saw the ironic draft selection where he tossed the hat for the helmet. BB was very well known for his head-scratching draft selections, which led to a lot of success for years; he loved those small-school, smart, versatile players. It eventually led to a bad string of drafts during his final years.
