Well boys, we're in.

I was glad to see they toned down the Wild Card celebration some compared to last year. I also like a lot of the comments and attitudes of the players in the clubhouse regarding their happiness with getting here, but having an overall feeling of discontent until the ultimate goal is achieved.

Cautious optimism begins now.
 
Can I get my "Wildcard Champion" T-Shirt yet? :cool:

I haven't really kept up with this thread, but I hope some of you are at least enjoying this ride a little bit.

These are the two points that are going to be on display in two weeks....Has Tito ever managed in the playoffs?? I'm pretty sure he hasn't (I know he was the bench coach with the A's).

One thing to keep in mind as well....in the p-offs, unless it becomes a blowout, we will be dealing with at most, five pitchers in a game. (Assuming a situational left is needed etc) I think the biggest issue is knowing when to go get your guy....while I think the Pedro incident the other night was instance where he was able to get a better feel for his #1 or #2 pitcher.(Maybe I'm giving him way too much credit here) I am confident he will be able to execute when it counts.

I still think he is a 100 times better managing the situational game situations.....and that his starting line-ups make sense.

Spider....seeing we are still three games back, do you think he's going to white flag it and get ready for the series or give one last shot for the divisional title? I think it may be worth it to to go for the prize, as I would prefer to face Oakland or even Anaheim in the short series?? Maybe I'm crazy.

You asked Spider, but I'll throw my opinion in here.

I think the Sox go a couple more games before deciding on this. Obviously, the Sox have to win out and the MFY's will have to lose at least 2 of 3 to Minny. The MFY's close out with Toronto in the Bronx, so I think the best we could hope for would be Toronto winning 1. If the MFY's lose the 1st two to Minny and the Sox sweep Tampa, then the Sox keep driving for the division.

BTW, if the Sox and Yanks tie, the Sox get the division without a playoff game. New rule in place this year, if teams tie for the division title and both are already in playoffs, the division is awarded to the winner of the season series (Sox, 11-8). If only the division winner gets in, then there would be a playoff game.

I don't think you are crazy. As good as Schilling has been, Santana is the Cy Young and he will be very tough to beat in game 1 even if Schilling goes for the Sox. That creates a little bit of a dilemma because I believe the Twins intend to go with a 3 man rotation and pitch Santana again in game 4 which means if the Sox lose game 1 against the Twins they would really have to win games 2 and 3 or they would be facing elimination in game 4 going up against Santana and that's not a spot you want to be in.

The bottom line is they need to try and run the table here until the Yanks clinch. If the Yanks clinch, then fine go ahead and rest some guys. Until then every game has meaning and should be treated as such. I thought it was odd that Francona started managing like it was an exhibition last night when it was just a 5 run lead. To me that's not insurmountable with 2 or 3 innings left in a game. Some of the subs I didn't mind but I get concerned when they take Manny out of a game that early and they don't have a huge lead.

I agree with bideau and Patsfandan, we should play out this Tampa Bay series and see what happens between the Yanks and Twins. If we're out of the division race heading into the Orioles series, then they'll be plenty of time to rest guys and get ready for the ALDS.

I'm really not that concerned about this match-up. I think that Schilling can shut down the Twins line-up just as easily as Santana can shut down the Sox.

Also, the Twins don't have Manny! ;)

What worries me about that matchup is not Schilling facing the twins line up, it's the Sox facing their cryptonite....a hard throwing lefty. See Kazmir.

WTF were the Mets thinking trading Kazmir for Zambrano? He may have thrown a no-no if he didn't get the boot last night. I don't think I've ever been so happy to see a Sox player get beaned as I was when he hit Millar.

Haha.. Me too. I honestly don't think he (Kazmir) plunked Millar
on purpose. Manny, yes. Millar, no.

The D Rays have a treasure there it seems.

The good thing about this is that we can let him idle down in Tampa for two seasons and grab him when Tampa can't resign him.

He's be a perfect pinch-hitter ala Eddie Gaedel. I don't care if santana, Kazmir or Jesus Christ himself pitched to him, the little guy would walk his way to first!!!

Good point! But of course we'd have to pinch run for him because it would take 157 steps for him to get down the 90' base path!

Another nice win tonight, no thanks to D-Blowe and Terry - I don't want to be on the post season roster - Adams. Kentucky Fried Kevin came up with the huge hit when it really counted.

Ummm. Go Twins.

Are you saying something negative about Ten Run Terry?

As much as I hate to admit it, right now, I think that 10th spot should belong to Mendoza (the pitcher formerly known as Menblowsa). He's been rock solid since the last rehab start, and has come through in a couple of clutches, including 2 perfect innings to hold the tie last night.
 
Santanna and Losche going today for the twinkies??? Sounds like a very possible sweep....

Also, the O's/Jay's game was ppd. yesterday forcing them to play a double header today. I'm hooping for the BP to get some good work in today to slow them down for this weekend's marathon with the sox....(thank god we wont have to face the O's in the p-offs)

By the way, will any of you be heading down to Baltimore for that series??....I grabbed by weekend tickets, hotel, and airfare for under $300.
