Anyone from North Carolina? We are seriously considering moving there (retiring actually) and do have a connection but I'm try to get all the info I can beforehand. Looking at the Brevard area and buying a chunk of land we can build on, we will be there in August and have 3 days to see what it has to offer.

My brother moved to the Greensboro area about 20 years ago. He had lived in Maine all of his life. He really likes it down there and said he would never move back to Maine.

I've been to the northwest corner of NC, my crazy sister-in-law has a house in the mountains up there (she got hammered by hurricane Helena). I don't know how different it is down in Brevard, but I can't imagine it's too different. It's certainly beautiful country in the NC mountains, you'll get all four seasons. Where she lives, it's hillbilly central. But the people are friendly, at least on the surface. My Masshole accent definitely sticks out there. I've spent much more time in the populated areas (Winston-Salem and Raleigh), so I can't add too much.

Thanks for the insight. My wife has a relative that lives in Brevard and they did not sustain any damage from Hurricane Helene, just a loss of power for a few days. Hopefully your sister-in-law came out of the Hurricane relatively unscathed.

Is she a “shiner”? 🤣

I'm from NC, but haven't lived there in over 20 years. I love it, and if I could have I'd have moved back there long ago. I miss it big time. It's a beautiful place.

Pretty sure @Muse lives in NC.
Yup. From Northern Maine and resides here. Though always looking/ visiting the North and home. Win the lotto I will have a house back home. Maine will always be my home while I reside here.

Love the mountains, beach and more of NC. It reminds me of home geographically. Don't live on the coast, though that is where we would love to be, but we don't feel like rebuilding/ repairing on a yearly basis.

If you don’t mind me asking, what part of NC do you live in?

Outer Banks don't interest you? That's where I'd go if I chose NC.
Love OBX haven't been in a while but once more is on our Bucket List. Lori and I have shared a mega house in corolla with other of my sisters famillies a dozen times or so. Always around my late sisters Sept 20th anniversary. Some how we dodged all the hurricanes. Almost always made a very long daytrip, the length of the banks and across by ferry to Ocracoke, Lighthose stops along the way. Love it. And drive through Beer windows here and there. Can you imagine that here in the peoples republic?

Cheers

I've ridden my MC through Western NC and it is certainly very nice.
One of my HS friends has been down there for years and grew a string of hardware stores in the state, he did real well.
One of his stores was in an area that got destroyed. His son runs most of the day to day now, and they have been working endlessly to recover and get opened up again.

A few years back I was considering retiring to that area and we were about to book a quick trip to the outer banks and spend a few days checking out the area. Then a hurricane spun up and it looked like it would get hit.... and it did.
We went to Marco Island instead.

I've been to Charlotte (to visit a wife's friend). It looked like a pretty typical US city tbh - business district with lots of skyscrapers, a bit of public transport, but sprawling suburbs that are set up for car drivers.

Of note, for you, would be the weather. It was late 60s Fahrenheit at the end of November, so I hate to imagine what it's like in Summer.

Can't really speak to the rest of NC.
