Political Playground

I didn't find it that hard.

If a topic didn't appeal to me at first glance, I just never clicked on it. If once I got inside it was something other than what interested me, I left.

I never had to resort to putting posters on "ignore," sending negative reps or PMs, and I wouldn't think of reporting a poster because my feelings got hurt.

Granted, my contributions as "Publius" were largely philosophical (libertarian small "l" and Austrian), or off-hand remarks intended to highlight a flaw or fallacy in an argument, so I didn't get deeply involved in debate with too many people.

Here is another thought...if the mods were so harried by the neg reps, PMs, sigs, and reporting......SHUT OFF THE FEATURES.

Although this board was light years ahead of patriots.com when it started, it did NOT have all the features we now enjoy, and it is NOT what made this place special. This board became what it was without rep, or casino cash, or sigs, etc.

Enforce basic conduct rules. Disable features like rep or PMs which were being abused. Doesn't seem too hard to me.
I'm glad you didn't post in those threads or abuse the Neg reps, reporting of post and other stuff but you would be surprised at the number of posters who did abuse them. But again it became more than that...I ask you to take a look at many of the threads and the direction they ended up taking, sadly those same issues began to carry over into the main area and that was an issue

as I said in a different thread, a sacrifice had to be made some place, and it was in a sub-forum where only a minority of poster participated.

Well, I guess the way I look at it is, the real problem here isn't with moderation or lack of moderation, or what forums there are or what forums there aren't. It's with self control by each poster knowing what is acceptable adult conversation and what is not. Hopefully these measures will just be the mods' way of showing us all that we need to take a good look at our selves and the way we treat others, and when we've learned that lesson stuff like the political forum can come back.

Honestly? I wish people could have controlled themselves better because I think it was a useful forum. If anyone can figure out how to keep the spillover from happening without excessive moderation (or ANY moderation, because we're not touching it with a ten foot pole), who knows.

But it's not happening for a while, if ever.

I think the removal of the political forum is a bit rough. If noone wants to moderate it, let the members have another shot at it.

I propose placing a sticky at the top of the forum to remind people to stay civil. If namecalling and harrassing is the problem, let posters use the sticky to quote posters who are obviously causing problems. The accuser would also have to show which one of the rules was broken by quoting the new moderation forum. 1 strike and your out of the PF for good. Frivolous accusations would also be a strike.

Sounds stupid but it could work.

I just wanted to chime in here. I am not a poster that actively participated in the political forum, but I did lurk a lot. It is interesting to me to see the debates about the most current (and important to our actual lives) political topics being discussed/argued by people that have knowledge of the issues...or at least a lot of passion about them. My liberal nature usually got quite a shock at the conservativeness of many of the posters here. I believe I gave out a few reps to Steve-O for trying to fight the good fight. :jester:

Anyway, I am not trying to get on your nerves or be another annoyance (I know you guys are trying to do what is best for this website). I know the thankless jobs you mods do. I just wanted to let you know that if you are taking an unofficial poll of how people felt towards the political forum, then count me in the "want it" group even though I was not one of those that commented in it often.

Or, maybe I can just count as a half vote since I am a crappy Colts fan. :)

thanks for your input, and you are correct in that at certain times it was a good read but the overflow of the battles within began to permeate the main forum and to control that area while implementing the new rules was stretching the mods too thin, the PF was sacrificed for the total planet picture.

I only speak for myself when I say there are crappy colts fans out there. And you are not among them.

I disagree. One sticky at the top of the political forum would be well noticed. Not sure what you mean about how that kills a thread.

I think its silly idea, but I also believe it would be effective. Why, because people who post there want to keep the forum. The mods voted on this, but none seem to ever post there except DC.

I dont see the overflow as being more than a small issue. IMO it is exaggerated. It is also annoying to hear that 95% of that forum was garbage when alot of good posters have a majority of their posts there.

BTW I am not trying to be disrespectful Mikie, I know you guys have said you get twice as many 'reports' there so I know you guys see alot of the garbage. I just would like to see a better solution thats all.

And yet there a half-dozen of them on the main forum. I've never gone into any of them.

Since the mods are in heavy-duty maintenance mode this week, why not move them somewhere where they aren't in the way? You could at least move the Ravens defense thread into the Football forum.

I know - I didn't support your cause.

There's lots of causes out there - I support what I can.
Oh goodness, I didn't mean it that way at all. I just meant removing my pastie. :)
