Lions expected to hire Bob Quinn as general manager, sources say

ESPN Link, be warned.

Quinn, who is from Norwood, Massachusetts, has worked for the Patriots the past 16 seasons, most recently as the team's director of pro scouting from 2012-present. He is one of the few members of the Patriots' personnel department who is inside the draft room, which in part reflects the level of trust he's earned within the organization.

Hmmm...maybe they're turning the page finally?

Or maybe the Pats won't pay anywhere near as much, and a guy loves to take that late lucrative gig, to solidify the retirement.

Or maybe Bill was mean to him. :coffee:

Cheers

He's done a hell of a job the last 3 years. BB has brought in a lot of guys who have done well. He'll be missed if this comes to pass. Talib, Dion Lewis, Hicks, Tarell Brown, Sheard...many more.
He'll be missed for sure.

I'm hearing Dave Zeigler will step in for Quinn and no brain power will be lost.

Good news

A few observations:

  • Other teams sign our free agents
  • Other teams recruit our coordinators, front office personnel, and free agents
  • GMs from other teams trade with the Pats
  • Free agents from other teams sign with the Pats
The notion that the Pats are pariahs in the league is promulgated by the media and the NFL front office.

The rest of the league - officials, coaches, GMs, and players - treat the Pats the same as any other team.

e Detroit Lions appear to be hiring Bob Quinn as their next general manager, that much we know. But as we detailed earlier in the day, not much else is known about Bob Quinn. Very little has been written about Quinn's career, and even NFL insiders that aren't part of the New England Patriots' organization know little about Quinn:

Not many outside NE know a ton about him. Tenured Patriots scout on both Pro and College.

So what do we know about the Lions new general manager? Here's a quick list:

1. His resume

Perhaps the most telling piece of information about Quinn is his job title progression as a member of the Patriots family. It goes as follows:

2000-2001: Player personnel assistant
2002-2003: Pro scout
2004-2007: Regional scout
2008: National scout
2009-2011: Assistant director of pro personnel
2012-2015: Director of pro scouting
After graduating with a master's degree, his entire career was spent with the Patriots.

2. Gil Brandt likes him a lot

In a story from The Detroit News, the former Vice President of player personnel for the Dallas Cowboys gushed over Quinn:

"There’s nobody close to this guy as far as knowledge and ability to evaluate. He understands analytics, he understands the salary cap, and this guy, to me, is a superior evaluator of people and players."

After news started to break that Quinn would become the Lions general manager, Brandt doubled down on his love for Quinn:

Bob Quinn's going to make an excellent GM for the Lions. I'm a big fan of this very smart man.

3. Bill Belichick gave him as big of a compliment as Bill Belichick gives

4. His high school nickname was "Quinny"

5. Even Patriots fans don't know anything about him

BONUS:

Here's what Richard Hill, Managing Editor over at Pats Pulpit, had to say about Quinn:

Quinn has done a fantastic job of rising through the ranks. The Patriots have made a habit of trading for players in the middle of the season so the Pro Scouting department deserves plenty of credit. Players like Akeem Ayers, Jonathan Casillas, Michael Williams, and Akiem Hicks have played huge roles over the past two seasons.

It is not that the Pats are pariahs, it is that other teams want a chance at winning. As the saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Look at Houston as a prime example of building Patriots South with our former coaches and players and Denver was before them and KC, etc. Even Indy talked about building the monster a few years ago which was really just code for build what the Patriots have done.

Great news, this makes me extremely happy. Building a good team starts with making good personnel decisions, and let's just say the Lions haven't exactly been known for that. The Pats will be just fine, and the Lions can use every bit of help they can get.

I wonder if the addition of Quinn might pique McDaniels' interest in the Lions.
